George W Bush’s Address to the Nation Rhetorical Analysis on September 11, 2001. Our nation was attacked by a terrorist group marking the first attack on our soil since Pearl Harbor in 1941. The President at the time George W Bush gave an address to the nation regarding the attack this is the speech that I am going to give a rhetorical analysis on President Bush was successful in all of his appeals in the speech. The President used ethos, pathos, and logos to come across to the people. He used logos to prove to our Nation that he can and will do something about the attack. One major example of this is when he says, “The functions of our government continue without interruption.”Federal agencies in Washington which had to be evacuated today are reopening for essential personnel tonight, and will be open for business tomorrow. Our financial institutions remain strong, and the American economy will be open for business, as well.” He shows the Nation that everything is under control, and the government knows what is going on and how to handle it. Bush established more ethos and pathos in the next few sentences by saying that “these acts of mass murder were intended to frighten our nation into chaos and retreat” (CNN). His statement described the sadness that Americans felt that day, but Bush then made a smart move in his speech; He changed the direction of the speech from negative to positive. This same paragraph ended with the statements that the American “country is strong.” This would shape Bush’s foreign policy for the rest of his term as president.
