Chloe Barone Mrs. Switzer AP U.S History 19 November 2014 Throughout the late 1800’s and early 1900’s America was busy establishing itself. Proving ourselves to be a dominant world power, we had possessed an undoubtedly strong navy and a piling list of countries we had taken under our wing. Although finally established America had started out small. During the 1840’s Americans had broke through social precedents as God’s chosen people to carry out Manifest Destiny, later shown by settling the Western Frontier.
United States Imperialism in the late 19th century was very selfish time. Many people in that time, debated about whether are not benefiting our country was the right way or the wrong way. The motiving factors that impacted our imperialism are economic, military, and cultural. These factors impacted the American Imperialism from 1890-194 by having control over weaker territories meeting our expanding needs.
In a time, in 1865, Reconstruction was ending. The Compromise of 1877 led the Republicans to end their fight for racial equality. This led to Rutherford B. Hayes, the President of the United States, to pull out troops from the South causing the Republican Party to dismiss. The end of Reconstruction brought America to imperialism. Imperialism allowed for America to gain more power by taking over territories aggressively.
The effects of imperialism was quite chaotic in the beginning causing an up rise from Africa and the Middle East. At first both resisted but over time western ways was making it’s way into a part of the daily routine. The imperialism started with Africa and eventually moved into the Middle East, but when it started in Africa it was for the natural resources the country possessed at the time. The Middle East was different due to the ruler at the time, Muhammad Ali was the ruler of Egypt and wanted to modernize Egypt the way he wanted to. He is sometimes known as “Father of Modern Egypt” although when he died they was not a leader that was as strong as he was to hold up his empire.
In Avatar there are countless references to imperialism. In the movie, Jake Sully uses an avatar to become one of the Na’vi people for the reason that humans and the Na’vi have problems with each other. Colonel Miles Quaritch gets greedy and wants the materials, specifically the material “unobtainium”, and storms Pandora with his team, ruining an abundance of the Na’vi people’s culture. That is where Imperialism comes in, they used military power to receive what they desire, something that would increase the state of the economy that they lived in.
As Frantz Facon once stated that “imperialism leaves behind germs of rot which we must clinically detect and remove from our land by from our minds as well”, one can assert without much exertion that such European powers, in the course of Imperialism, indeed, brought about an array of irreversible impairments such as ethnic tensions, slavery, increased local warfare, and many others. Rwanda, for instance, is a country that is rife with the presence of such an irretrievable deficiency. At the start of the 19th century, America was already expanding its territory. In 1803, the United States of America had bought the Louisiana Territory, it was bought from France which had made the country two times larger. In 1819 Spain had given up their territory of Florida to the United States. President Monroe issued the “Monroe Doctrine” in 1823, its main purpose was to warn the European countries to not enter the Western Hemisphere. In order for America to achieve its goal of becoming an imperialist nation they had conquered other countries economically, culturally, and with a strong military in the late 1800’s.
My potential thesis focuses on American religious imperialism towards Cuba in the late 19th century and early 20th century. I plan on concentrating on Protestant missionaries, more specifically the Presbyterian sector and the use of aspects of social Darwinism through the use of Christian churches. A few of the ways that I want to approach this topic involves understanding how Presbyterian missionaries used Manifest Destiny coupled with Social Darwinism and how they were able to use these aspects to disguise their intentions through the act of building churches and providing humanitarian aid in the war of 1898. A great change United States history was the development of the country as a whole, regarding its magnitude in land mass and overall spread of acquired territory. Also known as the Age of American Imperialism, this significant expansion came about from foreign relations with other nations. Through peaceful negotiations, as well as violent conflicts, the U.S.’s sphere of influence and control expanded across various bodies of water. Increased involvement with world relations triggered a shift in power from one side of the world to the other, which would lead to the establishment of the U.S. as a world power, or an independent entity powerful enough to bring change on a global scale. Foreign relations between the U.S. and other nations during the late 1800s and early 1900s increased and became more complex as their involvement within global affairs likewise intensified.

There followed a longer period, between sixty and ninety years, of direct European rule, called colonial rule. This was a time of profound upheaval for all of Africa’s peoples. Imperialism is the ambition of a powerful nation to dominate the political, economical, and cultural affairs of another nation or region. The idea of imperialism occurred after the Industrial Revolution in the late 19th century and early 20th century. The specific years of imperialism are from 1870-1914. The regions that were affected by imperialism include Africa, Asia, and Latin America. These region were wanted by the imperialist powers of this time, which were: Germany, Great Britain, Belgium, France, Italy, Portugal, and Spain.
Colonialism and Imperialism affected our world both positively and negatively. On one hand, Imperialism has often been linked with racial segregation, manipulation, and hardship. On the other, it has been said that many colonial powers contributed much in terms of schools, roads, railways, and much more. Whether this time period was constructive or harmful, it has played a large part in shaping our lives today. European Imperialism started long before the 1800’s.
