The role of the Athenian women was different compared to the role of a Spartan woman. In Athens, there were different classes of women; the women had very little choices open to them (Bailey). The women were not able to vote nor own/sell anything of great value (Bailey). The respectable women were not allowed to walk around town unless it was to a neighbor’s house or a religious service (Bailey). The women were at home and had to take care of the household and the children.
• Athens had a more intellectual leadership. • Pericles had huge influence in Athens. • Greece then began to weaken and Philip II had to take over. • Then it declined but some of the culture stays in Rome.
When in Rome Rome has a better system than Athens in my opinion. Athens citizens have more responsibility and rights then Rome. Rome has more of a family oriented style of citizenship. Athens and rome both honored citizenship in their own ways equally.
In Athens, women were mostly secluded from many things. They could not vote, leave the house without permission from their husband, and more. In Sparta, the rules for women were much more lenient. Spartan women would train with the men and could own land. In both Sparta and Athens, women could marry and raise children.
Spartan women could inherit land, and dowries (Fleck, 2012). Athenian women could not own land, inherit property, or pass properties on to their heirs (Fleck, 2012). Sparta’s economy was kept by women versus the Athenian’s economy, which was kept by the men. The reason that these two city-states were ran so different was because of Sparta’s need for a full time military. They had to give Spartan women rights and power to keep their economy going.
Greece and Rome, two ancient societies, both influenced many aspects of modern life. Their advancements were utilized in many later cultures. They influenced almost every part of today’s world, such as government, language, and architecture, as well as making scientific advancements. Also, the successes of these two civilizations lead to many countries modeling most of their public facilities and systems after the ones found in Greece and Rome. Ancient culture strongly influenced modern culture by means of language.
Romans believed in equal voting, and equal access to the government for all, which is also shown in our Democratic Government. Another way Greeks and Romans still influence out modern civilization is through art. Greek art strongly influenced Rome’s art. Greek art continues to play a key role in Literature and Art classes in our modern civilization. Greeks has highly developed literacy, which included drama, poetry, and music.
In ancient times, there is a general sense that women were simply items and slaves to their husbands. Ancient Greece specifically has a renowned reputation of favoring men. Men possessed the dominant role in public affairs and events while most women were pressured to stay at home. Very few records extensively discuss women; the records focus mostly on men. Despite the lacking records, it is certain how ancient Greeks viewed their women and their relationships with their male counterparts.
The Spartan women were able to own plots of land and run their own households, they even got an education. At Athens, got a little amount of formal education and had less
Ancient Rome left tremendous legacies such as technological advancements, religious beliefs and governmental structures that shaped the world today. The Romans conquered many territories and took on their cultures as well, in particular the Ancient Greek culture. Ancient Greek civilizations played a major role in the history and development of the Ancient Rome civilization. The Ancient Greeks influenced the social structure, religion and military strength of Ancient Rome.
Clearly, Sparta and Hellenistic women had more freedom and social rights than Athens women. The reason of how this phenomena occurred might be that at that period of time, Athens had the largest population of Attica. This indicates that the in this male community in Athens, the males could carry on almost all of the responsibilities of a society while the women could just stay at home and serve the men while they took part in public life. However, in Sparta and the Hellenistic era which there were not so much people around, women’s role would be more than simply taking care of household and children, they would need to shoulder some responsibility for their society, which brought along freedom and rights for
Ancient Rome was built on a plain and thus developed a strong centre with the whole civilization having a similar culture. Ancient Greece on the other hand consisted of numerous city-states with some having quite different cultures than others, due to mountains and sea restricting interaction with one another. The cultures of Athens and Sparta for example were very different. Athens was considered to be the city-state of freedom, knowledge and democracy. Sparta on the other hand was a militarian city-state with mandatory military service and considered itself “The protector of Greece”.
Ancient Greeks had a deep suspicion of foreigners, thinking of them all as "barbarians." With Medea, Euripides seems to confront this prejudice by choosing to honor a foreigner with the role of tragic heroine and by making her the most intelligent character in the play. However, the playwright also confirms many Greek stereotypes of foreigners by making Medea wild, overly passionate, and vengeful. When Medea was explaining her intention of killing the royals to the Chorus she said, "I have no city, and I'm being abused by my own husband. I was carried off, a trophy from a barbarian country.
Over the years we have taken many things from the Ancient cultures but no-one really focuses on what so today we are. In the first paragraph we will go over the art in both cultures. In the second we will go over the Law and Politics of each culture. In the third paragraph we will go over the architecture of them both. The art of Ancient Greece and Rome were both very unique.
All cities were close to water bodies while Rome was an inland nation and arranged on the banks of River Tiber. Talking about art of Greece and Rome, Greeks were thought to be better than that of Romans. One of the sculptures that Greece is known with is Venus de Milo. Romans were great at mosaic, wall painting and they were also known for creating realistic portraits.
