Teresa Blote April 13, 2015 8B Anthem Essay In class, we recently finished reading the book Anthem by Ayn Rand. Rand was born February 2nd, 1905 in St. Petersburg, Russia. In Anthem, published in 1938, Rand writes how Equality 7-2521 is treated unfairly amongst his society starting with being assigned the menial job of a Street Sweeper.
How Does One Lead a Rational Life in the Great Rebirth Ayn Rand is an illustrious writer, known for many of her works including the short novella Anthem and her short essay How Does One Lead a Rational Life in an Irrational Society. In Anthem, she speaks of a dystopian world set in the future with primitive technology. The Council expects everybody to look, act, and generally be the same as one another; however, Equality, the main character of Anthem, does not conform to the social norm. He rebels from the cookie-cutter system and learns to see the deep err in the way of the Council and finally realises the effects that the abusive treatment of the citizens creates.

From the beginning of mankind, women have been labeled as inferior to men not only physically, but mentally and intellectually as well. Only in 1920 did women gain the right to voice their opinions in government elections while wealthy white men received the expected right since the creation of the United States. A pioneer in women’s suffrage, Susan B. Anthony publicly spoke out against this hypocrisy in a time when women were only seen as child bearers and household keepers. Ayn Rand taught the principle, “One must never fail to pronounce moral judgment.” The grade of morality fluctuates depending on the time, place, and society. While today’s society will compose the portrait that we are continually growing stronger and improving, the politics of men cannot overcome simple flaws such as controlling the people of their society. This is no different in the novella Anthem. The ironic name given to Equality gives the indication that perhaps society is not as equal as they would fancy.
Also, sex is something that just doesn’t happen in the world of Anthem, sex isn’t really a taboo, it just doesn’t happen except for an event that happens once a year in a big room. Unlike 1984, where sex was allowed as long as it wasn’t emotional, sex only happens on a holiday set aside for it in Anthem. Orwell thought that if communism were to come to fruition, there would be a constant watch over people to make sure that nobody steps out of line, and the people wouldn’t want to deal with the insanity of the laws the government sets up. Ayn Rand thought that if communism was successful, there would be little to no need for a police force because the people would be so conditioned to think a certain way, that they would oppress the people who don’t think that way all on their own, without the need for a police
Anthem is a book that makes oneself contemplate the future and what evils are bestowed upon it. In this novel, the reader is caught in the life of Equality. Equality’s life is placed in the future, where the feared reality of communism has conquered all but the souls of few weary men. Equality is one of those few men who have a light that is invulnerable to a ravaging wind. Equality’s time captive before his extraordinary escape has taken a toll on his body and mind and now at the end of his journey forces him to question whether the decisions he’s made are full of sin or teeming with righteousness.
When one is confined to society and held captive against their ego, it is imperative that they learn to eulogize their own individuality, and learn to improve themselves. In Ayn Rand’s novella, Anthem, Rand uses Equality 7-2521 to communicate the importance of the individual. Equality has always had his own sense of individuality that causes him to stand out and defy the social norms. His individuality allows him to persevere and diverge from collectivist society.
In the words of Ayn Rand, “The word We is as lime poured over men.” This quote portrays the book Anthem and the threats of “We” that take place during the red scare. Anthem, written by Ayn Rand, depicts a story that revolves around a young rebellious man who goes against the collective mind of his society and follows his passions and ideals in the world where everything about the past has been wiped out from a great war. Equality, with strong reasoning, had motivation of personal interest that allowed him to escape from the collective society Equality’s motivation is fueled by personal interest. “It is a sin to write this, It is a sin to think words no other think and to put them down upon a paper no others are to see.
Title Michel Foucault once said, “There are forms of oppression and domination which become invisible. . .” The government, in Ayn Rand’s Anthem, is long since corrupt and has perverted their original idea of equality. Even though true equality will never be, this government has completely taken over all aspects of their citizens’ lives and the people do not acknowledge anything wrong. Oppression has become the normal reality for the citizens crushing their spirit until someone started to break the mold. Equality 7-2521 slowly confronted the injustice in his pursuit for knowledge.
Do you know what literary devices are? Did you know all books have them? A literary device is the structure used by a writer to show his or her messages. The novel Anthem by Ayn Rand is a perfect example. Ayn Rand uses literary devices such as characterization, point of view, plot, setting, symbols and more to show her messages and story.
In the beginning of the Anthem written by Ayn Rand, Equality 7-2521 was always told to act like his brothers, he was punished and disciplined as a child. They even state the same saying before bed each night, “We are all and all for one, there is no we only the great we, one indivisible and forever. ”(Chapter 1, Paragraph 8) Equality 7-2521 even states “We repeat this to ourselves, but it helps us not. ”(Chapter 1, Paragraph 9), basically he is saying that he has said this saying his whole life before he goes to bed, but he doesn't believe in what he states.
Ayn Rand’s Anthem starts by Equality 7-2521 saying “It is a sin to write this.” Throughout the story, Equality’s views and mindset changes, he realizes that he is different from his brothers and its ok to be different. He discovers that if something is legal it is not certainly right. His eager for knowledge taught him the word “I” abandoning the word “We”.
Explain the following quote: “To be free, a man must be free of his brothers.” How does this quote exemplify a theme of anthem? In the novella Anthem by Ayn Rand, Equality is learning that men had freedom and individual names. Equality 7-2521 had his brothers and the council holding him back from his freedom and self-ego, equality 7-2521 is learning the people from the unmentionable times had names and not numbers, in the novella Anthem
2017 was a year were women's right were highly discussed. From the rise of the #Metoo movement to numerous new laws on violence against women. During this year many have stood up for what they believe is right, and it has made an impact. All of this made me interested in continue researching about this subject, and that lead me to a book. A book where women's rights is the main topic.
