Muslim hate crimes are on the rise, spiking since 2015. The relate accelerated even more after the election of President-elect Trump. In 2015, the hate crimes against Muslims has risen to its highest since 9/11. The total number of hate crimes against all groups of people has risen from 5,479 to 5,850 from 2014 to 2015. There have been many reported attacks, including one at CSU, California State University, where two women wearing headscarves were attacked.
The teaching tolerance website was easy to explore and once you open the website you will find different hate crime-related subjects. Some of the couple subjects were bullying, civil rights, and immigration. There are not complete articles on the website but rather abstracts of stories that were written in books. Most of these curricula only give you an abstract of what the author wrote, they give you an idea of what the story is about and if you are interested in the story you must buy the book, CD, or DVD in order to listen or write the complete story. There are a few curricula on the website that gives you a PDF of the story, in some of these stories they also provide a video highlighting the story.
The popularity of Eugenics in the late nineteenth and early twentieth century as well as the panic over Satanism in the late twentieth century are examples of moral panics. Eugenics gained popularity because people became worried that the human species itself was changing due to integration of people by race and ethnicity. The Satanism Panic was a time of collective anxiety in the U.S. over the perceived threat of cults that would sexually abuse and kill children. Thompson (1998) names two characteristics researchers agree moral panics share: concern and hostility (p. 9). Both Eugenics and the Satanism panic demonstrate public concern and hostility.

According to Gerstenfeld, hate crimes “may or may not include sexual orientation, gender, national origin, physical or mental disability, age, or political affiliation.” Some argue that every group should be protected by hate crime legislation, but this runs the risk of watering down the significance of such protections. The groups that are most frequently targeted by hate crimes including African Americans, gays and lesbians, Jews, and Muslims should be prioritized over other groups. Historically, the most targeted groups in the United States are African Americans, LGBT community, Jews, and Muslims. The 1968 statute made it a crime to use, or threaten to use, force to willfully interfere with any person because of race, color, religion, or national origin and because the person is participating in a federally protected activity, such as public education, employment, jury service, travel, or the enjoyment of public accommodations, or helping another person to do so. However, in 2009, Obama signed the Matthew Shepard and James Byrd Jr. Hate Crimes Prevention Act.
In the recent news, everyone’s heard of the rise in hate crime. Most hate crime is “motivated by racial, sexual, or other prejudice, typically one involving violence,” (Dictionary.com). Hate crimes have spanned across the country and impact thousands of lives each year. The FBI started investigating hate crimes at the turn of the 20th century. The FBI define hate crime as, “criminal offense against a person or property motivated in whole or in part by an offender’s bias against a race, religion, disability, sexual orientation, ethnicity, gender, or gender identity,” (FBI).
In my experience, what Martin Luther King Jr. calls “thinking intensively and critically” is very different from what my high school teachers called “critical thinking”, most especially by the way Dr. King links intelligence and learning to the development of character, that is, growth as a person. Too often in my past, teachers mentioned critical thinking only as a mental activity of seeing through stereotypes, evaluating both sides of issues and understanding and accepting differences. As worthwhile as these are, I have found that high level thinking without having a more enlightened character is simply inadequate. Persecution is a term used to describe the oppressive or inequitable treatment towards someone or a group of people based on their beliefs, exterior appearances, or aspects of their personalities. People have been persecuted for many reasons, such as their religions. Christians, specifically, had been mistreated as long as their religion had been alive. One extreme instance of their suffering is their residency in the Roman Empire. The era of Christian persecution in Rome reigned for well over 186 years.
