Atticus’s and his courage “Courage is being scared to death, but saddling up anyway” - John Wayne. In to kill a mocking bird, courage is seen all through the book. Many characters throughout the book have shown great courage. However, we discover that Atticus is an outlier through his personality, actions, and words.
Throughout the book To Kill a Mockingbird, Atticus Finch’s portrayal as a perseverant, kind, and respectful man intensifies his daughter Scout’s and the reader’s reverence for him. At the beginning of the story he seems absent from Scout’s life, but this soon changes. When the lawyer decides to defend a black man in a case, she starts to get bullied in school. His calm and wise nature helps Scout go through times of hardship.
Atticus demonstrates courage because he fights for what he believes is right, and stands up for people. Atticus was the main character, and the father of Jem and Scout. He was known for his morals, and strong opinions on justice and equality. This is shown on page 30 when Harper Lee writes, “You never really understand a person until you consider things from his point of view… until you climb into his skin and walk around in it.” (Lee 30).
Atticus Finch was selected as the greatest movie hero by the American Film Institute ahead of many characters whom we more often recognize as “traditional” heroes because in the movie he was one of the few white people that supported blacks. Back then, many people didn’t treat black people well and since, Atticus stood up for Tom, a black man he is known to be a hero even though he didn’t win the case. He was selected amongst many characters because he did a brave thing….Atticus Finch is heroic because he didn’t care what other people thought about him and he defended a black man, named Tom for being accused of hurting a girl. Atticus knew he didn’t have much chance of winning the case because the jury was white, but he still tried to help
Every day in our lives, heroes are all around us. They may not be what society tells us is a hero, like Superman or Batman. They do not wear fancy costumes or have super powers. But these heroes change the lives of the people around them, for the better. Atticus Finch from To Kill a Mockingbird is the charismatic, understanding father of Scout and Jem Finch as well as a hard working lawyer in Maycomb County, Alabama.
In the book To Kill A Mockingbird, Atticus tells Scout that courage is “when you know you're licked before you begin but you begin anyway and you see it through no matter what.” Atticus has shown a lot of courage to his kids. Atticus showed courage by accepting the Tom Robinson case, by standing his ground at the jailhouse, and by standing up to Aunt Alexandra about Calpurnia. He even tries to get his kids to follow in his footsteps. What Atticus meant when he told Scout what courage was, was that even if you know that you're going to lose something it doesn't mean you shouldn't try.
In the novel, To Kill a Mockingbird, Harper Lee vividly illustrates the real meaning of courage, both physical and emotional, through various situations and characters. Jem and Scout mix up courage and strength. They think courage is the ability to use strength to get your way. But c courage in the novel is not about winning or losing. It’s about doing what’s right even when it may be hard and people may not be on your side.
Atticus’s definition of courage is going through with something you believe in even when you know it might go wrong. In the book, there are many courageous acts that happen but Atticus Finch shows the most courage all around. I will try to interpret these two motives and show how they are strongly connected to each other. There are many different types of courage and many people who all show it in their own personal way. If people talk about bravery and courage, they mostly think of the physical kind of courage. But there are also other kinds, which are often forgotten or cast aside by their big brother: moral and emotional courage.

Atticus Finch is portrayed as great parent in the novel To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee. The way Atticus Finch acts at home and on the streets provide a good role model for Jem and Scout. He is a parent who always does the right thing and stays true to himself and to his children at all times. Atticus is a positive role model for his children because he is the same character wherever he goes and whoever he talks to. When Scout misinterprets Miss Maudie’s words she attempts to defend his father about how he does not do anything at home different than what he would do at work.
While both Mayella and Boo grew up with parents that inflicted cruelty upon them, Jem and Scout were raised in a positive yet unusual way. As Scout says, “he played with us, read to us… treated us with a courteous detachment” (6) Atticus did tasks most fathers would, as Scout says, “he played with us, read to us… treated his children with a courteous detachment” (6). Through off-hand parenting, Scout and Jem were taught how to think and solve problems for themselves while still receiving a respectful kindness from their father. The way Atticus brought up his children helped them mature throughout the novel and it is reflected in the difference between their choices at the beginning and end of the story.
