With accusations of witchery and his guilt of lechery, Mr. Proctor feels he has a duty to save his name for his children. He can 't stand the idea of his family suffering for the mistakes he has made now and in the past. John 's initial reaction to his wife being accused based off the lust Abigail has, he says, "My wife will never die for me! I will bring your guts into your mouth but that goodness will not die for me!" (Miller 80) John knows he 's done wrong and will do anything to save Elizabeth 's reputation.
Atticus was obviously going to accept the job because that’s what he does and he said, “This case, Tom Robinson’s case, is something that goes to the essence of a man’s conscience-Scout, I couldn’t go to church and worship god if I didn’t try to help that man.(Pg. 120)” Atticus shows courage by defending Tom because he doesn’t care what the public thinks and will do everything in his power to try and get Tom free and back to his family. Atticus actually proves that Tom is innocent and Bob is really the guilty one but since Tom is black no one believes that he is truly
Resilience is shown in both of these heroes, as they took on noble tasks, while knowing it was futile. However Attikus and Bhutto stilled tried to just make a miniscule difference in their society. In To Kill a Mockingbird Atticus took Tom Robinson case, and even he admitted that a all white in the deep south would convict a black man on sight. Even so Atticus said that if he didn’t defend Tom Robinson he “couldn’t go to church and worship God if I didn’t try to help that man”(Lee 104). This demonstrates Atticus resilience as he has been willing to fight a losing battle just to demonstrate his convictions; a non racist judicial system in Maycomb, Alabama.
A well known quote by writer James Hollingworth is written as “Courage is not the absence of fear, but rather the judgement that something else is more important than fear.” It takes courage to stand up for something you believe in, no matter the consequences. People do not have courage when they aren’t afraid of something. People have courage when they take a stand against all other opinions or rejections and fight for what they believe is important. Courage is the ability to look past fear and focus only on the good that will come from such bravery.
“He also is willing to stand up against the odds-he knows he’s ‘licked’ before he even begins” (Text 2). Atticus knows he will not be able to win this case even if Tom Robinson is innocent. Unfortunately the town and the jury are corrupt and will not give Tom a fair trial. Almost anyone can see that Atticus Finch defends Tom Robinson to show compassion through the “Golden Rule” and set an example for his children.
He wants her to forgive her instead of holding a grudge on him forever. Lastly this is a believable act because John Proctor is a strong man who stands by what he believes in. we know that john is very against the Witch Trials. If he were to admit to witchcraft it would be against everything that he believes and thinks is
John Procter wanted to sign his name because he just wanted to end the “war.” but he also did not want to say anyone’s name. He ends up signing his name and when he finishes, he realizes that he no longer cares and he doesn't care if he dies. John ripped the paper in half and that one action resulted in his death.
Even though there are several pieces of evidence that show Tom is innocent Atticus knows he will not win, but that is no reason for him not to try. It makes sense for Atticus to defend Tom Robinson because he believes in the Golden Rule and he has integrity. The first reason why Atticus should defend Tom Robinson is because he believes in the Golden Rule. He believes that you should treat others the way you would want to be treated no matter what.
Although some may believe Boo is a better choice for a mockingbird, there is a greater amount of evidence that supports Tom is a mockingbird. The first reason Tom is the best example for the mockingbird is he was prosecuted for a crime he did not commit. In the novel it states that, "The state has not produced one iota of medical evidence to the effect that the crime Tom Robinson is charged with ever took place. It has relied instead upon the testimony of two witnesses who evidence has not only been called into serious question on cross-examination, but has been flatly contradicted by the defendant.
He is risk taker and stands up for what he believes in. When Atticus is given a case of a black man named Tom Robinson who is accused of rape, he knows that there isn 't any chance of him winning the case. “ "It couldn’t be worse, Jack.
The main priority is to discuss the defendant’s innocence or guilt. By keeping the subject of discussion on the boy, Juror Eight, has an easier time convincing the rest of the jury that he is not guilty of the murder of his father. Juror Three, the main antagonist of Twelve Angry Men, doesn’t possess the perseverance that Juror Eight does. Juror Three doesn’t have a reasonable cause, which in turn weakens his argument. His bottled up emotions over his son become a problem later in the play when
A reason why george should be justified is because he says if “i was alone i could live so easy” which you never say to a guy like lennie. George should be punished for killing lennie because if george never killed lennie they could of had their dream come true. and he should also be punished because he was rude to lennie. “Funny said
“Why, then, had he come hither? Was it but the mockery of penitence? A mockery, indeed, but in which his soul trifled with itself. He had been driven higher by the impulse of that Remorse which dogged him everywhere” (Hawthorne 138) here dimmesdale can 't face the justice of what he has done wrong which is why the author called him a coward and is the reason why he kept his secrets because he is a coward to admit it to and face the consequences which is why later the guilt of keeping them eats him from the inside.
Mr. Finch knew that at the beginning of the case that he had no chance at winning, but that wasn’t excuse for not trying to nor defend Tom. Atticus Believes that everyone deserves a fair chance of justice, “‘Simply because we were licked a hundred years before we started is no reason for us not to try to win,’ Atticus said” (Lee 78). He knows that Racism is almost like a Culture in Maycomb, which doesn’t help Tom 's side of the case. But that doesn’t matter for Atticus, he believes in equality off and on the court. Ultimately, Atticus wants Tom to have a fair trial that shows the truth, and has been attempted by
Therefore he would not be fulfilling Gods commands because he could no longer teach. Socrates argument about the laws not having an effect because he broke them is a very valid point. Many people would learn about his decisions, especially the young, and possibly follow his example. The State would be punished by not having control over its citizens. Because Socrates has always been satisfied with the laws, he has no right in destroying them.
