Atticus Influence On To Kill A Mockingbird

If you were faced with an impossible feat would you give up or keep trying? The story of To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee, is told through a young girl named Jean Louise Finch although she is more commonly known just as Scout. The book discusses heavy, real world problems such as racism and abuse through the eyes of a young girl. Atticus shows ambition throughout the book when he stands up for Tom Robinson and battles his case out to the very end.

As the hero of the novel To Kill a Mockingbird, Atticus Finch has an unorthodox outlook on racism. He says, “As you grow older, you’ll see white men cheat black men every day of your life, but let me tell you something and don’t you forget it— whenever a white man does that to a black man, no matter who he is, how rich he is, or how fine a family he comes from, that white man is trash.” (252). This outlook allows him to approach the obstacles that come with a trial of a black man vs a white woman. The story is told in the perspective of the main character Scout Finch a 6-year-old girl. She shows the readers how the good people of Maycomb are hurt with the bad of Maycomb. Scout demonstrates this by putting many characters through many obstacles.

Atticus wants his children to be able to learn from their mistakes and experiences. Atticus also treats his kids the same way he would treat anybody else. If it is the Cunninghams, Ewells, or Negroes he treats them all with respect and equally. Atticus tries to influence and impact his kids, and wants them to be raised in the best possible way. He acts the same way around his family as he does in public. Atticus allows each of his children to be their unique self. For instance, Scout is a young girl who during that time would be expected to wear a dress. Scout is not the typical girl because she prefers to wear overalls instead of a dress.
