To Kill a Mockingbird was written by Harper Lee. The book took place in the 1930’s in Maycomb, Alabama.This book was based off the Scottsboro boys. The Scottsboro boys were a group of black men being falsely accused of raping a white women. “They shot him,” said Atticus. “He was running. It was during the exercise period. They said he just broke into a blind raving charge at the fence and started climbing over. Right in front of them-” (Lee, 315) The Ewell family, Tom, and the racist town are all responsible for Tom Robinson’s death. The Ewell’s making up a false rape charge towards Tom Robinson is one of the people who caused the death of Tom. Bob Ewell, father of the family, was a drunk. In the 1930’s people were very judgmental, racist and cruel towards anyone under them in the social pyramid. Where Tom went wrong was helping a white women out. Tom had a violent past. Tom was given 30 days once for disorderly conduct and that didn't help his side of the case in any way. “Yes, suh. I felt right sorry for her, she seemed to try more’n the rest of ‘em-” (Lee, 264) Tom said in his testimony that he felt bad for Mayella because she always tried more than the rest of the family and she was always left with all the children so he entered the house to help her.Tom entering the Ewell’s home was a horrible choice, he should have continued on his way home and mined his own business knowing how whites treated blacks in Maycomb. Tom was charged guilty to raping to Mayella Ewell and was sent to jail. After Tom was taken to jail.
