To Kill a Mockingbird takes place in Alabama, where racism is a very big problem. In to Kill a Mockingbird they talk about a case where Tom Robinson (A black man) supposedly “raped” a white woman. In the case, Atticus was defending Tom Robinson and made very strong points and proved the Ewells wrong but still ended up losing because the courtroom favorited the Ewells because they were white. Tom Robinson on his side of the story said that he did not rape her and that she actually tried to kiss him. All that the Ewells could say was Tom Robinson tried to rape her, but they had no evidence and were trying to avoid Atticus’s questions that proved Tom innocently. There was so much favoritism towards whites because of their skin color which caused …show more content…
For example, they were assuming that Tom Robinson was the one the harmed Miss Mayella because he was a Negro, ““Found her lying on the floor in the middle of the front room, one on the right as you go in. She was pretty well beat up, but I heaved her to her feet and she washed her face in a bucket in the corner and said she was all right. I asked her who hurt her and she said it was Tom Robinson — ””(Lee, Chapter 17)Mr. Ewell was the one that made that statement and wanted to get the rest of the room against him and persuade the judge to make sure that he goes to jail. He wanted to make it seem like Tom did it because he was black, he did it and wanted to blame Tom because there was a chance he did it from what we know. For example, everyone going against Tom Robinson assumed he raped Miss Mayella and beat her up because she had bruises but Tom Robinson defends himself and makes a strong case, “ She reached up an‘ kissed me ’side of the‘ face. She says she never kissed a grown man before an’ she might as well kiss a nigger. She says what her papa do to her don’t count. She says, ‘Kiss me back, nigger.’”() Tom now shows and proves that Miss Mayella was the one that started it, he made a claim that made a lot of sense. It also explains what Mr.Ewell saw and cleared up the reason why he ran out the house. All in …show more content…
To show, Atticus explains to his son Jem that the justice system is broken and favor white people no matter how strong of a case he could make, “There's something in our world that makes men lose their heads—they couldn't be fair if they tried. In our courts, when it's a white man's word against a black man's, the white man always wins. They're ugly, but those are the facts of life.” (Lee, Chapter 23). Atticus has experience with these cases before because of his job and he knows how it all works, no matter what he does, nothing he could do would help him win if he was defending a black person. After Tom was sent to jail, he tried to escape because he didn’t want to be there and he got shot 17 times. To prove Atticus comes home with a frown on his face knowing that Tom is now dead, he tells Scout and Aunt Alexandra the news, “ ‘Oh yes, the guards called to him to stop. They fired a few shots in the air, then to kill. They got him just as he went over the fence. They said if he’d had two good arms he’d have made it, he was moving that fast. Seventeen bullet holes in him. They didn’t have to shoot him that much.’’ (Lee, Chapter 24).They shot him way too many times, he was trying to escape so they had the right to shoot him because he wasn’t listening to their warnings but they didn't have to shoot him 17 times. At the end of the day, it is too late to change the fact what the
In To Kill a Mockingbird, a black man named Tom Robinson was accused of raping a white woman. Although Atticus had helped Tom Robinson as his lawyer, Tom Robinson had not received a fair trial, because he had no witnesses to back him up. Since the jury was not impartial, it made the trial even harder on Tom’s part. When explaining the trial to Scout, Atticus tells her, “’ Simply because we were licked a hundred years before we started.
Then some people thought that Tom was innocent but the judge decided to make Tom go to prison. In the book it said that Mayella hugged and kissed Tom on the cheek. From this I can infer that Mayella is desperate and can get away with this because Tom Robinson is a black person. This reminds me of a couple southern movies I’ve watched where black people are always the first to suspect because of their color. Tom Robinson on trial for his life said Bob Ewell yelled “whore I’ll kill you” when he saw Mayella kiss Tom from the window.
I felt right sorry for her, she seemed to try more’n the rest of ‘em-” (Lee, 264) Tom said in his testimony that he felt bad for Mayella because she always tried more than the rest of the family and she was always left with all the children so he entered the house to help her. Tom entering the Ewell’s home was a horrible choice, he should have continued on his way home and mined his own business knowing how whites treated blacks in Maycomb. Tom was charged guilty to raping to Mayella Ewell and was sent to jail. After Tom was taken to jail.
Comparing Trials. We have court trials monthly, whether it's minor or major. But, without a witness how will the jury pick a side and decide if the accused is guilty or not guilty? As trails exist in non-fiction they exist in fiction.
A critical event in the book is when Atticus accepts to defend Tom Robinson, a black man, who is accused of raping Mayella Ewell; however, he is disfavored against by the town due to his race. In the book, Atticus says, “...The only thing we’ve got is a black man’s word against the Ewells’. The evidence boils down to you did--I-didn’t. The jury couldn’t possibly be expected to take Tom Robinson’s word against the Ewells’...” (Lee 117).
The book “To Kill a Mockingbird” written by Harper Lee and the article “Scottsboro Boys Trial” both contain controversial court cases. For “To Kill a Mockingbird” a black male named Tom Robinson was accused of raping a white woman named Mayella Ewell. In the “Scottsboro Boys Trial” nine young black men and teenagers are accused of raping two white females named Victoria Price and Ruby Bates. Both cases transpired in the 1930s in Alabama. This is bad for the accused as racism was at an all-time in the 1930s especially in the deep south.
Tom was accused of raping a white woman who was Mayella Ewell, Mayella said he raped her while he was helping her with chores. She later on tells the readers that it was false allegations. The reason why she didn 't tell the truth at her first trial was because, Mayella was afraid of being embarrassed because she kissed a black male. She rather have an innocent man get charged with a crime than that. “However, Robinson was transferred from the state prison to Maycomb 's county jail on Saturday, two days before he stood trial on Monday, and Atticus had to defend him against a lynch mob”.
During the early to mid 1900s there was a lot of racism, especially in the southern United States. This is expressed more inside the court cases of the time. While lots of these ended poorly for defendant, it was often because of the color of their skin, not because they were guilty. In fact many times the defendant was actually innocent.
The Ewells could have been lying because most likely Mayella tempted Tom. Back then if you were involved with a colored person you were disgraced by the whole town. Mayella could have been trying to cover this up and get Tom arrested so he wouldn't be able to tell anyone. The jury convicted Tom Robinson because he was colored and back then white people believed they had to stick together against the colored people. This shows that based on the evidence Tom Robinson was only convicted because of his skin color.
The novel " How To Kill a Mockingbird" takes place in the fictional town of Maycomb, a racially divided Alabama town, set in the early 1930s. Atticus Finch, a lawyer, that agrees to defend a young black man,Tom Johnson, who is accused of raping a white woman. Many of the townspeople try to get Atticus to pull out of the trail, but he decides to go with his conscience. Depending on how the trail turns out, this could effect any change in racial attitudes in Maycomb. Throughout the novel the author shows countless examples of hasty generalization.
All evidence pointed to Mr. Ewell as the offender, a man who spends all his money on whiskey and lets his children cry from starvation. While, Tom Robinson is a good person, with a good job and a good family but with a bad, bad skin color. And that's the important factor. The judge, jury, both lawyers, practically the entire town knew that Tom was innocent.
I am reading To Kill A Mockingbird by Harper Lee and I am on page 304. This book is about Tom Robinson’s trial. Bob Ewell is accusing Tom of raping his daughter, Mayella. There is no evidence that Tom committed this crime although he is still found guilty. In this paper I will be evaluating.
Back then segregation was a problem. It is surprising that the Ewell’s would make a lie just to get Tom Robinson killed. This is because on page 257, it says “Tom Robinson was probably the only person who was ever decent to her. So, knowing this, Tom would have no motive in hurting Mayella if he was the only one who was nice to her. This is why I believe Bob Ewell abused his own daughter instead of Tom
Tom Robinson is a young African-American who's been accused of raping and abusing Mayella Ewell, a young and closeted white woman. Racial discrimination is hinted throughout Tom’s trial as Atticus Finch explains to Jem that a white man’s word will always win over that of a black man’s - "... In our courts, when it's a white man's word against a black man's, the white man always wins. They're ugly, but those are the facts of life" (220). Atticus explains to Jem that in the courts of Maycomb, a black man’s state of innocence or guilt is truly determined by a white man’s testimony.
To Kill a Mockingbird was a film about two children named Scout and Jem with their father Atticus living in a small town in Alabama in the 1930s where the Great Depression and segregation ran wild. In this particular film, we see Atticus Finch a lawyer defending a colored man accused of rape. During the trial people went back and forth discussing the event until Atticus made his final statement pleading to the jury to make a wise decision and to base it on the facts. Unfortunately, the all-white jury stated guilty. It goes to show that in the 1930s, the division between whites and colored was visible throughout the nation.
