Rhetorical Appeals in the Wounded Warrior Project Advertisements The Wounded Warrior Project recruits the aid of the American public to honor and assist injured veterans of the United States armed forces. Through financial aid, the non-profit organization provides programs for the physical and mental injuries of soldiers with little or no cost to the warriors. The organization also offers support services for the warrior’s family (www.woundedwarriorproject.org). Through advertisements, the Wounded Warrior Project hopes to gain the public’s aid to finance the organization’s programs.
The Things They Carried by American author Tim O’Brien, who was drafted in the Vietnam war, describes the experience of the American infantry fighting in Vietnam. O’Brien utilises various rhetorical devices to illustrate the immense emotional & physical burdens the soldiers were to bear to enlighten the reader about the true horrors of war. For example, O’Brien employs asyndeton & polysyndeton in sentences listing the many things the soldiers carried. “They carried Sterno, safety pins, trip flares, signal flares, spools of wire, razor blades…,” (O’Brien). The lists of items carried carry on, overwhelming & exhausting the reader of the physical burdens of war.
My rhetoric analysis is on an open letter to Starbucks after the author discovered the company’s involvement with Planned Parenthood. I found the letter through a link on Facebook, as all great pieces of literature are discovered. Some background knowledge may be needed about the accusations being made towards Planned Parenthood, although the author goes into lots of detail explaining these accusations, which are that Planned Parenthood is taking highly developed fetuses from the abortions that they perform and selling them. This open letter is written to the Starbucks Corporation, but it is an open letter, so the audience also includes patrons of Starbucks. The purpose of the letter is to get Starbucks to stop subsidizing Planned Parenthood
Rationale: The Things I Carry In part 4: Critical study, we have examined the text The Things They Carried by Tim O’Brien, I have attempted to replicate a passage from his work to exemplify both the physical and the abstract things I carry with me on a daily basis. Through my written task, “The Things I Carry”, I have attempted to capture an honest introspection of a girl of indomitable spirit despite all the ordeals in her life by mimicking Tim O’ Brien’s writing style. I mirrored O’ Brien’s writing style in how I structured my essay.
“Honey, you are changing that boy’s life.” A friend of Leigh Anne’s exclaimed. Leigh Anne grinned and said, “No, he’s changing mine.” This exchange of words comes from the film trailer of an award-winning film, The Blind Side, directed by John Lee Hancock, released on November 20th, 2009. This film puts emphasis on a homeless, black teen, Michael Oher, who has had no stability or support in his life thus far.
Joan Didion in the article, “On Keeping a Notebook” (1968) explains that keeping a notebook is a great way to keep your thoughts together. Didion supports her explanation by telling about examples of a girl who starts to keep a notebook; she tells why keeping a notebook is important other than just trying to keep our thoughts together. The author’s purpose is to enlighten to begin to keep a notebook. The author writes in a personal tone for anyone that is skeptical about keeping a notebook. Didion uses three rhetorical strategies in her article; rhetorical questions, flashbacks, and pathos.
1. The effects of Eighner’s attention to language in the first five paragraphs emphasizes that he is knowledgeable and confident about dumpster diving. As he states, “I live from the refuse of others. I am a scavenger” (Eighner 108). Eighner create an appeal to ethos when he displays his own experiences on the lifestyle of dumpster diving and its different aspects.
“Free-Range Kids,” offers the controversial perspective of the ‘free-range’ parenting philosophy, telling readers that “children deserve parents who love them, teach them, trust them—and then let go of the handlebars”. Similarly, the speech given by Julie Lythcott-Haim, “How to raise successful kids without over-parenting” offers the perspective directly opposing the belief that “kids can’t be successful unless parents are protecting and preventing at every turn”. The two texts offer similar perspectives, but utilise different generic conventions. Skenazy utilizes persuasive techniques such as anecdotal evidence, statistics and expert opinion to endorse the ‘free-range’ technique and add a level of validity. "Nike is so widespread across so many apparel and footwear categories, that right now I think their biggest competition is themselves," said by Ralph Parks who is the president of the 450-store Footaction chain. He also added that, "The brand is becoming bigger than life itself. " Nike has been around for over 50 years, and according the Nike website, they got their name from the Greek goddess of victory, and it is pronounced "ny'-kee." Nike, like many other companies, uses forms of elements like ethos, pathos and logos to manipulate viewers in there advertisements and commercials.
Reflection Essay The story, “Carry Your Own Skis”, by Lian Dolan uses rhetoric in many different ways to persuade her audience that if you learn responsibility early in life, it will help you in the future. She accomplishes this by using the rhetorical appeals ethos pathos and logos. Not only did these help to make an appealing claim, but also to connect with the audience. Mostly, the audience is pointed toward older generations who, like her, had responsibilities and no choices about what to do.
Escape from Camp 14 is the true story of Shin Dong-hyuk, who is the only known person to have been born in and escape from a North Korean labor camp. After numerous interviews, the book’s author, Blaine Harden, details the reader about Shin’s life both inside and outside the camp as he assimilates into different societies. As critical information is revealed, Harden uncovers the corruption in the political landscape in North Korea. Shin’s life in Camp 14 accentuates the struggles to gain basic human freedom and elucidates food as an even more precious commodity. The straightforward diction and intriguing combination of rhetorical devices effectively expresses the brutality and oppression in the North Korean prison camp.
The advertisement I chose for this assignment is a Camel cigarette advertisement from the 1950s. The top half of the advertisement depicts an older male doctor smoking a Camel cigarette. The caption for the top half of the image uses rhetorical strategies to convince the viewer to purchase Camel cigarettes. The author of this advertisement uses different text sizes and effects to highlight what is important in the advertisement.
Rhetorical analysis is an investigation into how someone uses his/her critical reading skills to analyze text. The objective of the rhetorical analysis is the study of how the author writes, instead of what the author wrote. At that point, we need to examine the method that the author uses to attain his goal. According to Jonah G. Willihnganz “A rhetorical analysis is an examination of how a text persuades us of its point of view. It focuses on identifying and investigating the way a text communicates, what strategies it employs to connect to an audience, frame an issue, establish its stakes, make a particular claim, support it, and persuade the audience to accept the claim”.
The unknown not knowing where you are, how you got there or the purpose of being there. The Maze Runner written by James Dashner, is a fictional novel based in the future. Dashner uses many literary devices to help portray his imaginative story, and paint a picture in the reader’s head. The characters are described in great detail and the reader can quickly imagine their personalities and appearance. The theme used is very basic but, is fully expressed throughout the book.
The use of plastic bags has been debated for years. Some people prefer to use them, and others would rather use substitutes, and most have their personal reasons why they lean one way or the other in the argument. In this article, the author addresses why he believes plastic bags should not be banned. The author, Adam B. Summers, uses various literary tools and appeals throughout his article, "Bag Ban Bad for Freedom and Environment," to support his argument that banning plastic bags would do more harm than good. Logical appeal is the most frequently used literary device in the passage.
