The book I read was Hatchet by Gary Paulsen. This novel is about a thirteen-year-old boy named Brian Robeson, (narrates the story), who crashes in a Canadian forest while trying to visit his dad for the summer. Gary Paulsen created a great adventure with great change and development in the character, Brian and his surroundings. Brain has internal and external struggles before, during, and after him being stranded in Canadian wilderness. This Drama and Adventure story has many different characters, settings, problems, and main events as well as a clear resolution and theme.
Brain, a thirteen-year-old boy from The Big Apple, is the main character. His two parents, divorced are leaved unnamed but also a huge part of the story’s plot. Brian has

There were many problems. One problem was the cheating and divorce of his parents. One main event that caused it was, during a party, Brian caught his mother kissing a man which was not his father. Later on his parents divorced for an unknown but seemingly related reason. Another problem was him being stranded in a Canadian forest. The main event that caused this was that Jim/Jake had a heart attack causing Brain to attempt to control the plane but fail and crash land into a lake in a Canadian forest. This creates the problem on how he is going to survive which is going to be the main problem. This lead to another main event, or many event made into one main one. Brain starts off not knowing anything. He tries finding food only receiving berries. Later through his months in the forest, he learns to hunts for fish, get fresh water, build shelter, and live semi normal. Another main event that effected most of the story and gave the title of the story. His mother, on their way to the plane, gave him a hatchet for a nice gesture. He used this for many things, such as, cutting wood for shelter and opening the plane for a kit of essentials. The last main event and resolution was when a plane finds him and lands onto the lake, saving him and taking him back home. Brian, completely dumbfounded, not …show more content…
One literary device is Foreshadowing. This is shown by the pilot teaching him how to control the plane prepares us for him landing the plane himself and the pilot’s sudden concern with a pain in his shoulder and arm foreshadows his death of a heart attack. This is important cause this causes the main plot of the story. Another literary device is Irony. It is ironic that Brian’s mother gives him a hatchet as a gift before he leaves, because it is the tool that will mean survival for him and Brian finally finds the survival kit even though he has learned on his own how to survive. This important cause the hatchet shapes part of the story, if not most. A third literary device is a Flashback. When Brain catches his mom cheating on Brian’s dad with a strange man. This is important because it might be the cause of the divorce of Brian’s parents. Imagery. Brian talks about the forest and the lake which gives us a setting to visualize while reading the story. This is important so we can visualize it. A forth literary device is Symbolism. The Hatchet was a symbol of life and how it had many uses and got through the journey in the forest. This is important because the hatchet is used many times in the story. The last literary device is Syntax. Gary Paulsen uses one line paragraphs and one word sentences. This gives kind of a dramatic effect which is completely
Hatchet is the first book from the Hatchet series written by Gary Paulsen. The book was first written in 1989 and it is still one of the famous book among the young readers. The book Hatchet is all about the main character Brian, whose parents got divorced because of a SECRET and gets stuck in a Canadian wilderness by himself after a plane crash and had to survive only with a hatchet. Since Brian was a city boy, he wasn’t use to surviving in a rough circumstance but as the story develops, Brian also becomes more independent and more pragmatic. There were many themes throughout the book Hatchet, however the main 3 themes that would be described in the analysis are family, isolation and perseverance.
Three keys to surviving being lost in the wilderness are survival instincts, an axe, and scenes. In Hatchet by Gary Paulsen, thirteen-year-old Brian Robeson used all three after he is the only survivor of a plane crash in the Canadian wilderness. Brian adapts and grows because of his struggle to survive. As a result of the events, he changes from distressed in the beginning, to lonesome yet egotistical in the middle, to floored in the end.
Nature can be a dangerous thing. You can be eaten alive and suffer a painful death, everyone knows that. What doesn’t come to mind at first is that luck does play a part in being able to survive in nature. The book I’m writing about is Hatchet by Gary Paulsen. The main character (Brian) definitely has some bad luck moments in the wild, but he does have good luck moments to make up for it and boost his survival chances as well.
The author Jerry Spinelli. He has written many best seller books. He also wrote Maniac Magee. He dedicated Maniac Magee to Ray and Jerry Lincoln. 2.
Literary Devices in the Cremation of Sam McGee Literary devices are used to help readers understand an author’s idea. Robert W. Service uses literary devices throughout his poem “The Cremation of Sam McGee.” These devices can be easy to spot or sometimes have to be studied in order to find them. The poem tells about a man who was panning for gold in the Yukon and froze to death in the cold. While his accomplice made a promise to dispose his body no matter the circumstances.
Do you know what literary devices are? Did you know all books have them? A literary device is the structure used by a writer to show his or her messages. The novel Anthem by Ayn Rand is a perfect example. Ayn Rand uses literary devices such as characterization, point of view, plot, setting, symbols and more to show her messages and story.
The book I choice to read was, “Brian’s Winter”, by Gary Paulsen. This book is about Brian after the private plane he was flying in crashes in to the rugged forests of Canada. Brian went through many struggles while trying the best he could to survive in the harsh environment. Some of the biggest events in this story include when he is attacked by a bear, during the major storms and some of his questionable encounters with the wolves. If I were telling a friend about the entire story in two minutes I would say, Brian’s parents were divorced leading him to visit his father for the first time in a long time.
Literary devices are used by an author to enhance a story. These devices can help to make a piece more descriptive, complex and thrilling. Literary devices can also help the reader further understand the text. Conflict, characterization, and imagery are exemplary examples of literary devices used by authors. Conflict is one of the most essential literary devices.
An important event in Hatchet was when he rebuilt his shelter after the tornado. Brian had been in the forest for about 2 months and he wants to live and survive to get home and see his family. He learned that he could survive and get out of the forest and that there is a reason for survival. Brian's had been caught in a tornado and survived. He rebuilds his shelter so it would keep out stronger animals.
If you got lost and was forced to survive in the wilderness, would you survive? In the book Hatchet by Gary Paulsen the main character Brian got in a plane crash and survive in the Canadian wilderness for 54 days. Throughout the book Brian became stronger mentally and physically as he tried to survive and faced many tragedies. While trying to survive Brian had to come up with good ideas and for that reason he had many aha moments. The two aha moments that I think where the most important was when he found out the hatchet could be used to make fire and when he found out that the water bends light and so he had to aim under the fish and not right on top of them. These helped him face this harsh reality he was having to live.
“Hatchet” does a better job of telling the story, than “A cry in the wilds” . I believe this because it show’s more imagery and a better understanding of foreshadowing, rather than just showing us a picture. For example, imagery in the book, Brian described the kiss of his mother and the secret kissing. According to the text, the book showed imagery by saying , “he widened the hole with his finger and looked inside. Just an egg.
The utilization of symbolism, diction and syntax all foreshadow the ending of the story and help the reader understand the meaning of
