The U.S. believes that California will someday break away from Mexico because they think Mexico is imbecile and has a bad government. The invasion was threatened solely because Texas had determined… to annex herself to our Union; and under those circumstances, it was plainly our duty to extend our protection over her citizens and soil.” (Polk 325) This quote shows: Polk had to help Texas that one time. This had become necessary, to meet a threatened invasion of Texas by the Mexican forces.” (Polk 325) This quote shows: Polk got ready for the war, he put the military in between the border if any Mexicans came close. The americans got engaged with Mexican troops, even though 16 Americans died the number of killed Mexicans is unknown. This Information shows: Some people were done being threatened so they crossed the river to state their freedom to the Mexicans. This evidence is not justified because the only reason Mexico attacked was because they felt threatened since Polk was attacking their freedom. The U.S. threatened Mexico, the Mexicans felt that threat and decided to attack before the Americans
The Mexican War was a violent and devastating event between United States and Mexico that lasted from 1846-1848. President Polk had to lie to congress, to make United States declare war on Mexico. Lincoln considered President Polk provoked as a vote-fixing device and hoped the arguments against the war would cause his reputation in the United States House of Representative. Lincoln claims President Polk misrepresented the whole thing that the Presidents Polk evidence was not true by any means. Lincoln lays out evidence that president Polk gave is either incorrect or irrelevant reasons to gain support from congress.
The true spark if the war was lit when America annexed Texas without the permission of Mexico. Along with this, America chooses to ignore Mexico’s decisions all in all. The 11th president of the United States was President Polk. President Polk was for the Mexican American War and even decided to asked for Congress approval to declare war on Mexico in ‘President Polk’s Address to Congress Calling for a Declaration of War’. In President Polk’s Address to Congress Calling for a Declaration of War, May 11, 1846, “...The Mexican Government refused all negotiation, and have made to proposition of any kind.”
How did California, The Golden State, become a part of the United States of America? The answer lies in the Mexican-American War. This controversial war was fought in 1846 under the presidency of James K. Polk, a strong believer in Manifest Destiny. It took place after the annexation of Texas and was a result of a dispute over land between the Nueces River and Rio Grande. The Mexican-American War was unjustified for three reasons, for one; Polk intentionally instigates the war with Mexico, secondly; the U.S. only wanted Mexican land to expand their own, and finally; in order to obtain this land, America violates Mexican laws.
By establishing a treaty with Mexico without consulting the Mexican government, the United States made the situation worse. Hence, Mexico and the United States are both at fault for the Mexican-American war. First and foremost, after gaining independence from Mexico, Texas wanted annexation by the US. Texas wished to be a member of the United States, as stated by Polk in document B. Polk responded to this by setting restrictions to safeguard US residents living in Texas. Sixteen Americans were slain by the Mexican military who crossed the border.
The United States was not justified in going to war with Mexico. In Document A John L. O’Sullivan said, “..our manifest destiny to overspread the continent allotted by Providence (God)...” During this time period America was
“On April 25, 1846, captain Seth Thornton of the United States army and his 70 soldiers were attacked by a much larger Mexican force. (hook exercise 315) The captain and his army were attacked. “The incident occurred in the disputed territory north of the Rio Grande and reports suggest 16 Americans were killed. The attack occurred where Texas and the United States believed the border between Mexico and Texas was.

After Texas became their own Republic and later became part of the United States, Mexico still had not officially recognized Texas as not being part of Mexico; this is what started the Mexican-American war and helped the United States reach their goal of stretching across the whole continent. War is never pretty, but in this case, the outcome was a successful Westward Expansion. Manifest Destiny was very important, and nothing was going to stop the U.S. from accomplishing it. Manifest Destiny was used by the Americans to give reasoning to their expansion to the West. Manifest Destiny refers to the God-given right for the Americans to take as much territory as possible to the west, across the whole continent to be exact.
and Mexican forces had taken place in U.S. territory.” “Further, legislators were at odds over whether Polk had the right to unilaterally declare that a state of war
In Document B, President Polk said, “I had ordered and efficient military force to take a position...to meet a threatened invasion of Texas by the Mexican forces….invasion was threatened solely because Texas had determined….to annex herself to our Union,... it was plainly our duty to extend our protection over her citizens and soil.” President Polk then mentioned the attack at the Rio del Norte, where the invasion in Texas happened. This evidence shows the US was justified in going to war with Mexico because Texas was invaded by Mexico, meaning that the U.S. should protect Texas by fighting
The United states was longing to annex,or take land into a country, California. One reason the Mexican War was justified
When Mexico gained its independence from Spain in 1821, a string of ruthless dictators and weak presidents made Mexico an easy target for its powerful neighbor, the United States. The US swooped in to expand its territory and its popular institution of slavery. By doing so, the US started a war with Mexico that was justified for illegitimate reasons. The Mexican-American War was not justified because the US took Mexico’s land for the expansion of slavery, and justified their taking advantage of Mexico when it was politically weak by hiding behind Manifest Destiny.
Though it is a valid point, Texas should have been able to not get authorization from Mexico, as long as Texas got the US’s permission. Manifest Destiny was the will of God for the US to take over California. “Other nations checking the fulfillment of our manifest destiny to overspread the continent allotted by Providence (God) for the free development of our yearly multiplying millions.” (O’sullivan,
The Mexican-American War changed the Unites States of America in a monumental way. This war changed The U.S.A.’s relationship with foreign powers and the economic standpoint of the nation. The Mexican- American war, and its strong ties to manifest destiny, shaped the nation in a country bordered by two seas with a chance for common folk and foreigners to have a sustainable life due to the gold rush. The war can also be accounted for the downfall leading to the Civil War over the conflict of slavery due to the land purchased in the wars treaty. Conflict between Mexico and the United States began when Texas, previously part of Mexico, became part of the United States.
A main piece of evidence supporting that claim is the 16 Americans that the Mexicans killed on supposed “American Soil”. However, those 16 Americans were killed in disputed the land. The land was not Mexico’s, nor was it America’s, it was basically unclaimed. Both Mexico’s and America’s viewpoints on their borders were different, so that is most likely the reason behind the disputed land. Additionally, President Polk knew about the border issues, and expected Mexicans to be there.
