Many labels were used to characterize the Middle Ages, however the best were The Dark Ages, The Age of Feudalism, and The Age of Faith. The Dark Ages accurately identifies the Middle Ages because of all the death, destruction, and plague throughout. The Middle Ages followed the decline of the Roman Empire, which causes very harsh times across Europe. Also this time period consists of the plague which virtually slaughters one-third of Europe.
Three episodes that occurred in the late medieval Eurasian world – the Crusades, the Mongols and the Black Death -- disrupted the country and society and changed the world forever. The Crusades that were the wars against religion of the Christians, Judaism and Islam, were fought to try to change people's religion to their cause. The Mongols were Barbarians who moved across Eurasia, conquering lands, bringing death, and bulldozing anything that stood in their way as they invaded. The Black Death disease devastated the people and the economy as it spread relentlessly across the land. The motte and bailey castles were a design of castles that were much present in England, after the Norman Conquest of England in 1066. The construction of these castles would be the start of a massive castle building program in England and Wales. With the Norman Conquest, William the Conqueror knew they had to build something to protect themselves, so they built the motte and bailey castles, which have been a success for them before. They were able to capture huge areas of land to build their castles and they also built them on areas that they were able to conquer. William would assign a loyal noble of his to a castle and move on to capture new territory.
The Medieval Ages were a time where many things like romance, art, music, poetry, disease and death all thrived. Everyone in this time period had a different point of view on it. Some thought it was a golden age, some thought it was an age of feudalism, and some also thought it was a dark age. Yes, this time may have had its ups, but it also had many, many downs. Its darkest times consisted of Barbarian invasions, death, and wars.
Many barbarian invasions occurred during the Middle Ages. As stated in document 6, the Middle Age was described as “dark”. According to the historian Frantz Funck-Brentano, they destroyed the villages and left the people in terror. Churches and towns were burnt down, the towns of Dordrecht were burnt down by Barbarian tribes.
Despite the hundreds of castles built in the Medieval Japanese time period only twelve survive to this very day. The history of Medieval Japanese castles are still evident in today’s society through structures, buildings or documents. After much research on castles in Medieval Japan I came to the question of ‘What was the purpose of constructing castles in the time of Medieval Japan?’ Two castles in particular are testament to this and answer the question.

Throughout history, Europe has faced many adversities such as plagues that immediately impacted the people. The Justinian plague, which lasted from 541-549 AD, and the Black Death, which affected Europe from 1347-1351, are two such plagues that affected the societies of Europe. These plagues brought death tolls that affected the economy and military strength of countries. As a result of the Justian Plague, almost a third of the Byzantine population was wiped out. While many believe that plagues only brought about destruction, the plagues that affected Europe during the Middle Ages didn't only negatively influence the nations but also caused the region to enter a new age of prosperity.
Europe faced many difficulties during the 13th and early 14th century which was considered the dark ages, many things accrued during that time. There was war between England and France which lasted for a hundred years from 1337-1453 these claimed many lives between the British and the French people to this day they have not forgotten the tragedy befallen both countries. After the fall of the Roman Empire in 476 CE, it led into the Middle Ages. Commonly referred as the Dark Age, Europe was in a time of reformation. Many have used the “Dark Age” as a synonym for the Middle Ages, due to the lack of education and unethical actions that occurred during 500 CE to 1500 CE. The Middle Ages weren’t so dark as it seemed, it was a duration of reconstruction, acquired learning, agricultural boom, technology improvements and architecture.

(Opening paragraph) Introductory sentence- life in a medieval castle is not a good place to live due to the serious situations that makes people not want to stay because “the rooms are extremely cold”, “it has a really bad smell” and “the windows are extremely small to look out of.” People would not think it is a safe place to stay overnight due to it being uncomfortable for a living circumstance, and finding a better way to make it more stable for everyone to feel like there at home. Overall back then the Medieval castles was very destructive and dangerous, therefore living in a medieval castle may not be a good place to live. Today when we look at a castles they are a lot bigger, has more windows, a better smell and even shows a reflection of the castle in the water. (Second paragraph)
