The theme of sex plays a big role in the play since sex in this play was associated with a plethora of things including corruption and death. The numerous scandals that occurred in Vienna raise multiple questions such as should the government interfere with sexual activity and show the social issues that plagued Vienna. Mortality also plays a big role in this play because it affects the character in a unique way. Mortality in this play occurs in many forms including spiritually and physical mortality. For some people in this play it is simply the fear of death, while for people like Isabella virginity trumps mortality. Isabella thinks virginity is the greatest crime, even more than physical death. The theme of justice both incorporates sex and mortality and helps end the play with a happy ending. Shakespeare makes the audience decide whether to sentence a man to death. The theme that is the strongest one in this play is that principle is worth taking lives for. An example from the play is when Elizabeth goes to jail because Abigail has accused her of witchcraft, she is fine with going. Elizabeth knows if she sacrifices her life maybe it will save the rest of the town and friends from being hanged. The other major evidence from the play is when John tries to get Mary to tell the truth that what the girls and everything they had done is being made up. But when that falls though John confesses that he is with the devil just to have all this chaos over with.
The title alone is also a pun-like definition woven into dialogue of the play signifying that the women are of little value or importance to not only the investigation, but to society in general. Everything beneficial that could have been used for this murder is hidden due to the conflicting parties involved. Although this play is based and written in 1916, men and women still struggle today with the dominance and stereotypes that each gender holds. This conflict has a knot on society that is nearly impossible to
The play explores themes of guilt, revenge, justice, and hysteria. Ultimately,
It reveals how people commit cruel acts out of selfish intentions. In this situation, the girls claim to “come to Heaven’s side” by pointing fingers at others for witchcraft, although they were only doing so to get themselves out of their own trouble. These acts of cruelty reflect upon the evil motives of the perpetrators that become more common after it is done once, as seen through the continuous trials and suspicions, which acts as one of the most major conflicts in the play. Without these cruel accusations, there would be neither plot nor ending. With this same situation, it can be concluded that accusations become more frequent during an interval of time when there are more people accusing.
It shows whoever reads it why lying is a sin. A society or puritans, focused on perfection of religion, is shocked by an occurrence of witches. Witches are the Devil’s evildoers, and should be persecuted at once. Abigal, the drama queen of the play, attempts to kill the wife of the man she loves with witchcraft. They are found, but whenever Abigal and the others attending are being accused, they lie, blaming others of being witches.
The theme is this scene is supernatural. This theme is important in the play because without the witches there would be no story. The audiences will be uncomfortable and quite scared of her because witches can kill people. They would be immersed into the play because of the
Within the play Shakespeare uses death to show the downsides of love and the ultimate result in conflicts. To show the impact of death, Shakespeare successfully uses Mercutio, Romeo and Juliet and other minor characters to develop the effect of death. From the very beginning of the play, Shakespeare introduces death as the penultimate result of love, displaying a common theme of tragedy. First shown in the prologue the story of the 'star crossed lovers' is demonstrated to be destructive as the 'death marked love' is the root of their troubles. Shakespeare successfully shows the negative effects of love and sets a tragic tone for the rest of the play as the audience is already aware of the 'violent end' of the play and pick up on the irony of knowing the ending before the plot.

The interest of an audience is held by themes that are fundamental to the human condition, as these reflect our world and examine human nature. For example, Othello explores themes of jealousy which is still relevant to this day. Therefore most themes in this play have a broad appeal to all people. The lives of a twenty first century audience are substantially different to those of a Shakespearean time but the themes of love, hate and death are timeless.
The play had a realistic representation of women who were accused of being witches. In that day those accused of being such were sentenced to death, evidently the fear was real and it led to horrible
The feminization of Adam continues to develop throughout the play and it is a key element to understand the submissive role of the character who is subject to objectification and manipulation. Another aspect in the play that allows the reader to identify Adam as a victim of Evelyn is the element of
Rome. Bodies in this play embody political significance. Systematic violence and torture impregnated against bodies are performative of an overarching power of an empire that foresees a downfall. Patriarchal and vengeful nature of power strategically uses female body as a tool to exert authority over the subjects.
All the characters in Shakespeare's Twelfth Night each change from the beginning of the writing to the end of the writing. They all have different personalities, from Feste, the mischievous clown to Sir Andrew Aguecheek, an arrogant man who is swallowed in the idea that he is witty and cunning. The setting has a large influence on the characters, as well as the plot. All of these combined add up to one of the most impactful and famous plays of all time : Twelfth Night, or What You Will.
In a sense, the play is a tragedy of the traditional society. It is a tragedy for the society represented by Torvald because that society had been confidently dealing with women in that manner which it regarded as correct and just. Now that a woman has suddenly given it a blow at almost its bases — the religion, traditional values, education, the institution of marriage, and so on — the society is facing a crisis, or a tragedy. If all the women, who are of course treated no better than this, do the same, the whole of the social system would collapse. And the impact would be basically the tragic destruction of the man's basis of happiness.
