Some would say that your parents always know what's best for you, but what happens when love changes all of that? In "Romeo and Juliet", Juliet chooses to go against her parents’ wishes and marry the man she truly loves, only leading her to her own death in the end. In Shakespeare's play "Romeo and Juliet", Two star-crossed lovers meet at a party. They fell in love, but their story tragically ended due to the feud between Montagues and Capulets. Juliet's rebellion against her own name is what ended their lives. Juliet knows that what she was doing was wrong, but love made her not care. For instance, Juliet states in 1.5 136-139 "My only love sprung from my only hate! Too early, seen unknown, and known too late!" Juliet knew that he was a loathed enemy, being born a Montague. However, this did not stop her. She fell in love with him regardless. Although Juliet knew between "right and wrong", she chose "wrong" anyway. It was clear that the two star-crossed lovers would not be able to last, but that did not stop them. They tried everything they could to be with each other despite the family feud. …show more content…
Juliet was supposed to marry Paris, but she refused. She was already married to Romeo, and she could not go against her vows. For example, Juliet says in 3.5 116-117, "Now by Saint Peter's Church, and Peter too, he shall not make me there a joyful bride." Lady Capulet told Juliet that she was to marry Paris, and Juliet refused. Juliet's parents assumed that she was still grieving over Tybalt's death, and that she was being ungrateful. However, she was thinking about Romeo, and how she could not go against their vows. Juliet's parents thought that refusing the marriage was immature but Juliet was only staying true to her vows, making her not only very mature, but also a good
She resents Juliet as she would not consent to her marriage to Paris, which meant that her family could no longer achieve any further authority over the community. She could not view Juliet as a person but instead saw her as a tool for climbing the social ladder. She could not tolerate Juliet's disobedience. Juliet's emotions were irrelevant to her. This impacted how the play took place as Juliet is forced to devise a plan with Friar Laurence When the Capulet family discovered that Juliet would not marry Paris, they all abandoned her.
Lord Capulet insisted that Juliet marry into a powerful and rich family even though Juliet wanted to marry Romeo. This puts Juliet in a tough situation where she has to choose between her family and Romeo. This led to bad results as Juliet took extreme measures to escape getting married to Paris and stay with Romeo, including taking her own life.
“Ay, sir, but she will none, she gives you thanks./I would the fool were married to her grave.” (A3S5L144-145). The nurse says that Juliet doesn’t want to marry Paris but she thanks him for asking. It ends with Lord Capulet yelling at Juliet for not agreeing with him. Not only did Juliet's parents try to force her to marry Paris, but at the highest point in the story, Capulet gets really mad and yells at her telling her that if she does what they ask then she is going to live on the streets.
He should not have given her a poorly thought out plan if he could not guarantee that it would not go wrong, and Juliet was wrong to put her trust in him even if he was the only one that knew what had happened between her and
Thus then in brief, The valiant Paris seeks you for his love" (Shakespeare I. iii. 71-76). With this goal in mind, 13-year-old Juliet quickly came to the conclusion that she must marry Romeo in order to be happy. Romeo and Juliet would have had a different relationship, and Capulet would not have set up the marriage to Paris if this hadn't been forced upon her. That would eliminate the main problem that led to their
Juliet declines the marriage between her and Paris as stated, “I will not marry yet, and, when I do,I swear it shall be Romeo, whom you know I hate, rather than Paris.” This shows how Juliet never wanted to marry paris, and was deeply in love with
Juliet's parents forced her to marry Paris, which led her to take the risky decision of faking her own death. The parents don't have any support for juliet. If they would just have not let her marry Paris then many things would have been changed. The parents are so stubborn and full of hatred. Romeo and Juliet likely would have been a good match for each other.
Shakespeare shows that in the different situations their parents were put in, they either did or they didn't know what to do. Romeo’s parents know what to do when he is sad and even when he almost gets killed for avenging Mercutio. Juliet’s parents don’t know what to do when they forced her to make the choice to marry Paris and when they didn't let her have her own opinion. In some situations, parents don't know what to do for
Lord Capulet was insistent on the idea of Juliet marrying Paris, and not just for her benefit. Their marriage would improve his social status and increase his overall wealth. The only issue with this was that Juliet did not wish to marry him, (quote of Juliet not wanting to marry Paris). Some may think that Juliet was being unreasonable. After all, marrying Paris would have been beneficial to her as well, he was handsome, wealthy, and young.
When she refused to marry Paris Lord Capulet exclaimed, “Hang thee, young baggage! disobedient wretch! I tell thee what: get thee to church o’ Thursday, or never after look me in the face: Speak not, reply not, do not answer me;” ( Romeo and Juliet pg 63). After Juliet was told that her father had planned a wedding for her she wasn’t sure what she should do. All she knew was that she was already married so she couldn’t marry Paris.
Juliet knows that her parents will not approve of her relationship with
Juliet states that she is not ready to marry and when she is, it will most definitely not be Paris. Lord rejects that idea and scolds Juliet for thinking of such nonsense. Lord then tells Juliet that she has no choice and will marry Paris on Thursday. Juliet will then tell her father that she will marry Paris and Lord Capulet is enlighten! In fact Lord is so happy that he moves the marriage up a day, which throw Friar’s plan off schedule.
The most defiant choice that Romeo and Juliet take for their love is their choice to be married. Juliet knows that her father or anyone in her family would not approve of this choice, but she still does it cause she loves Romeo. This love struck mentality drives Romeo and Juliet to be married and this secret marriage causes turmoil when Lord Capulet demands Juliet to marry Paris. Although Juliet knows that she is already married to Romeo loyal to him, not Paris and refuses to marry “doth Paris” (Shakespeare. III.v.145).
In “Romeo and Juliet” Shakespeare tells you at the end that Romeo and Juliet died from making rash decisions without thinking about the consequences. The story is about two lovers that should have thought things through and learn from their mistakes but end up failing in the long run. So these two people are enemies but lovers. Their family does not want them to love each other. They
Juliet loses her reason for love “Reason lost the battle, and all I could do was surrender and accept I was in love” This quote by paulo coelho illustrates the way juliet loses her reason for love.
