By this point, i think i would agree with Callarman’s opinion because there are abundantly details on how he deviated from his life. He believed that he would be safe and thought he understood everything, however that was not the occurrence. McCandless was an astute, clever kid but was exceedingly obdurate. He did everything he could do to survive but at the end, death was inevitable. There was nothing that he could do nor anyone else, so he had to face the facts.
I believe Shaun Callarman whom focuses on Chris McCandless is quite harsh in saying Chris had no common sense and saying that he does not admire him for his courage when Chris McCandless was a brave, wise and intelligent man. He knew exactly what he was getting into when he started his journey on going to Alaska. I think that he wanted to explore the wild and experience a different life other than the one he had. I disagree with Callarman saying McCandless was bright and arrogant at the same time. He had no business going to Alaska but that was his tactic for getting away from society.
Some would say “Life on the road is suited for everyone”, others such as for myself, would disagree. Life on the road is not suited for everyone, because not everyone can throw away their normal life and go on the road or the wilderness and survive like Chris McCandless. Some would think, Chris McCandless, was on a suicide mission but he was only following his dreams and he actually did, unlike many people. Chris McCandless inspired so many people to move out, leave their old lives, and have a fresh start at their life. Chris McCandless was a independent person and he was trying to get away from civilization because he felt like he never fit into it.
Although Victor very well fits the role of a tragic hero with a fatal flaw, he also fits the role of a hero. He sacrifices years of his life to work towards a goal that would forever change the world. Victor creates this creature not knowing what it will turn out as, risking his own life for the science world. It is also very heroic of Victor to go through the process of bringing something to life because it was something no one had attempted before. Therefore, Victor is the most capable and best epitome of an epic hero.
Chris McCandless frequently did exactly that. The majority of people that hear or read the story of McCandless overlook the fact that Chris could be, in fact, selfless even when it didn’t benefit him. Even when he must go without. Chris McCandless wanted to have an adventure and learn what it’s like to be away from the conforming ways of society. He wanted to escape the evils of his life and the world.
For this reason, McCandless traveled with little effects. In addition, McCandless thought he could found the solution to his frustration with the adultery of his father, and found the true happiness for his life through escaping into the wild. Chris McCandless endangered his life many times in this adventure, and perhaps he was trying to find the happiness of the life through risking his life. He highlighted passages that he felt a strong connection to. McCandless highlighted one of the passage in the book “Family Happiness” by Leo Tolstoy.
Beowulf on the other hand is selfless. He went to Herat out of good faith. When he entered the battle he had no idea what he was up against, also he didn’t know if he was going to win. Knowing he had the faith and the dependence of the people Beowulf went into battel with Grendel. He risked his life to help others, even though the issue had nothing to do with him.
Nature tells Equality that individuality is man’s birthright, man’s one true victory. It is a self motivated animal, that not even the propaganda of socialism can cage. This selfishness is what eventually prompts Equality to look at his reflection in awe, create electrical lighting with his ingenuity, and, lastly, love Liberty. By recognizing and accepting these individual strengths, interests, and desires, Equality is victorious in freeing himself from collectivism. Man only comprehends rigid conformity.
There were only short periods in time where McCandless was truly on his own. His journey into Alaska would prove the longest period in time where he was on his own, but that would prove fatal to him. McCandless thought he wanted to escape society, even those whom he came to call “friend”. In the end, it was them who could have saved him from his doom and it is apparent when McCandless sees his entire life flash before he finally succumbs to death. McCandless most likely never sought out to be alone forever, but rather to find the answer to his questions along his journey.
Some of these situations could have been prevented yet he decided to do some sort of an “trial and error”. Whether it was kayaking through the colorado river or surviving under extreme weather conditions, McCandless made it his responsibility to beat the odds. So what and who was he proving that he could live within nature and survive? Simply that he is in fit condition and got lucky and cheated death a few times is an understatement. Chris simply conveys to the audience that he is more than a delusional backpacker who is going with the flow.
He was their idol. Grant on the other hand was not raised wealthy at all he knew the struggle, he had a vision for where he thought the future was going. Completely different, but exactly the same when it came to their personality. Almost the same even when they were fighting, Grant fought with tenacity, Lee fought knowing he would give his life at any second if he had too. This is why people looked up
While playing with the fire he didn’t think he can get burned by it. Even when his ambitions were too unrealistic to achieve, he continued to follow them, relying oh his belief of his own exceptionality. Maybe if he would have been less self-centered and a little more humble to let other people help him to prepare better for his journey, he could still be alive, but unfortunately instead of thinking rationally he let his arrogance cloud his judgments and in April 1992 he walked into the Alaskan forest not prepared for what was waiting ahead of
