Firstly I will assess the impact of the new theory of evolution as described in Darwin’s Origin of Species. Before Charles Darwin published The Origin of Species, evolution was seen from a biblical perspective. That is, that God made the world in seven days and created all living creatures on the fifth day. Although Charles Darwin is known as the Father of Evolution, he is not the first person to come up with the idea. Before him, his grandfather touched on the theory of evolution in a scientific poem, Zoonomia.
Darwin proved evolution in multiple ways each of which Quammen discusses. First, to prove his position, Quammen expressed the scientific evidence behind theories their strong standing in the scientific community. Quammen does this by using examples such as the atomic theory and the theory of continental drift both of which are strong beliefs in the science community. Therefore, he expressed the strength of the theory of evolution and explained how it is more than just an idea.

1. Savages in the context Captain Fitzroy and Darwin were people in their “most primitive state”. The natives Darwin and captain FitzRoy encountered were much different than the ‘civilized’ citizens of Europe. After researching the definition of the word ‘savage’ and putting the word into historical context, I believe natives were called savages because of their differences from European culture. Never did Darwin suggest that this was meant to apply to humans and their societies, cultures and races. However although the theory adapted by Herbert Spencer, and originally created by Darwin, contributed towards imperialism and colonisation it was not the sole cause of it. Science may not offer us absolute certainty about the world, however it can give us explanations for what seems more likely than others.
