The Bible is used for reference in knowing for Christians. To help in deciphering the complex language of the Bible Christians have preachers and churches that followers are encouraged to attend (Shelly & Miller, 2006). Instead Wiccans have priests and priestesses, who are more advanced in their practice, to help guide and teach younger followers (Slick, n.d.). In lieu of the Bible, Wiccans have thirteen principles. They offer an explanation when presented with the death of a young adult, or when someone who seems to be of relatively good health becomes ill (Barker 2008:129). For example, the death of a young woman named Mona was blamed on sorcery in order to provide an explanation to the villagers since there were given no medical reason (Barker 2008:125). Barker concluded that although Christianity does not believe in sorcery, and both methods of understanding have different views, they can and do coexist in harmony within the Maisin people (Barker 2008:134). Hedican’s textbook “Social Anthropology” discusses the coexistence of Christianity and traditional beliefs among the Mi’Kmaq.

I agree with Kinnaman’s unbiased assessment of Christianity and I find his research extremely helpful, because it provides us with a clear idea and an approximation of the precise degree of disdain and distrust others have towards the Christian faith. Furthermore, his research permits us to stand apart and examine ourselves as Christians. Kinnaman’s research results uncovered the most common points of skepticism and objections raised by outsiders towards the church and Christianity (Kinnaman, 2007). According to Kinnaman, the six issues or themes outsiders have against believers are the following: 1) Hypocritical 2)

INTRODUCTION “It has been said by a thoughtful writer that the subject of witchcraft has hardly received that place which it deserves in the history of opinions.” (Notestein) Contrary to popular belief, Witchcraft is far more than mischief made by Sabrina the Teenage Witch or the hexes and curses made by the unappealing Hocus Pocus Coven. Witchcraft or Wicca, as they are generally used interchangeably, is a branch of paganism, a “Nature based magical religion and practice.” (Moura 39) After the European Witch Trials, those of the Wiccan faith hid themselves from the religious officials ready to burn them at the stake at any time. It was only after occultist and author Gerald Brousseau Gardner stayed with a local Coven that the ancient practices of the Wiccan religion came back to light, hailing him as the Father of Modern Wicca.
Wicca is a rapidly growing neopagan religious movement that is a nature based religion that celebrates the changing of the seasons and with a belief in a Divine that it is manifested into two aspects; the God and the Goddess that is revitalizing the “Old Ways”. There are generally two schools of thought about the history of Wicca as a religion. One is that Wicca is a continuous hidden witchcraft religion that had its start in paleolithic times then went underground and remained hidden during the Burning Times where Christianity came to the forefront, and the other is that Wicca is a modern reconstruction of the old pagan religions. The word wicca finds its roots in the old Anglo-Saxon word wicce that means one who practices sorcery with
