WILLIAM BYRD AND JONATHAN EDWARDS We all started out a certain way. People among times have moved from place to place, and learned, as well as created, different cultures. The new world was an opportunity for anything to happen, given the freedom of religion. There are two men that started the path for preachers today. William Byrd and Jonathan Edwards were both very well respected, religious men. Although they had a lot in common, they had their differences.They were born and raised in different era’s and cultures. Also, they lived in different states, and they preached quite differently. William Byrd was born to a wealthy family in the state of Virginia, although he grew up in Essex, England. While growing up in Essex, he lived with his uncle. His father was the pastor of East Windsor, so he grew up in a religious home. He studied at yale and graduated as valedictorian. He once said, "From my childhood up my mind had been full of objections against the doctrine of God's sovereignty… It used to appear like a horrible doctrine to me.” Later as he was reading 1 Timothy 1:17, he stated, "As I read the words, there came into my soul, and was as it were diffused through it, a sense of the glory of the Divine Being; a new sense, quite different from anything I ever experienced before… I thought with myself, how excellent a Being that was, and how happy I should be, if I might enjoy that God, and be rapt up to him in heaven; and be as it were swallowed up in him for
One leader for the Confederacy was Jefferson Davis. He contributed to the course and outcome of the Civil War by leading the Confederates, most people think he was a stronger leader than Abraham Lincoln, mainly because he was in the United States MIlitary Academy at West Point. Also he was a officer during the Mexican War. Then he helped try to win the war by serving as Secretary of War under the 14th president Franklin Pierce, additionally Jefferson Davis was widely respected for his courage and for his honesty. One leader for the Union was president Abraham Lincoln.
April 2, 1865 Grant had taken charge. He had been plowing through city after city. He was going after Davis next. Davis was getting ready to leave. Grant had already taken control over the Mississippi.
Jonathan Edwards was a critical thinker in shaping the First Great Awakening and did this through his congregation in Northampton in New England. Edwards was born on October 5, 1703 in East Windsor, Connecticut to a minister and a daughter of Reverend Solomon Stoddard. Edwards prepared for his schooling by his father and elder siblings to later attend Yale College where two years after graduation he studied theology. While in college, Edwards took a liking to science, but unlike other students that went toward deism, he “saw the natural world as evidence of God’s masterful design,”(Marsden) Jonathan Edwards used his interest of science and the natural world in his sermons as evidence to God’s greatness on Earth. As he grew up and became a fill in pastor for different churches throughout the Northeast, he realized that he was not satisfied with his conversion.
After reading the letters and secret diaries of Samuel Sewall and William Byrd, I was able to see the views and perspectives of two great, but very different men. Samuel Sewall was born in England and came to America, to Massachusetts in 1661 with his parents at a young age. He received his education at Harvard, studying theology. Sewall was a judge during the Salem witch trials and also served a as member of the Colonial Governors Council, where he served as Chief Justice.
Abraham Lincoln and Fredrick Douglass. Both were grand figures in history, noted for their contributions to the end of slavery, although both came from radically different backgrounds. For instance, both their childhoods were incredibly different. Frederick Douglass was born into slavery, and was also illiterate due to the strict rules prohibiting slaves from becoming educated. He spent much time as a child learning to read from the poor white children, whom he gave food in return for their teachings.
James Madison was not just our fourth president of the United States, he was also known as the Father of the Constitution. His contributions to the U.S. Constitution, Federalist Papers, and Bill of Rights makes him renowned as the greatest in history. Madison believed in a balanced federal government where the people and fair officials could run it without any problems nor consequences. Even before he was president, he helped establish the Democratic-Republican Party along with Thomas Jefferson. Born in Virginia in 1751, Madison was the eldest out of his twelve siblings.
Edwards and Henry two very different men in history remembered for different things offer different approaches to reasoning. Edwards’ appeal to reason is fear he uses fear to convert and encourage the people at his church to appease god and follow his teaching devoutly. Yet Henry’s appeal to reason is logic, freedom from oppression and fulfilling a religious duty to god. Henry’s approach considerably more civil and reasonable compared to Edward direct approach of instilling fear to keep people from sin. Henry’s approach is constructive in bringing people together to fight for a cause.
Puritan Beliefs and the Resistance from the Native Americans Here I will discuss some of the Puritan beliefs revealed that led to tensions, conflicts, and concerns among the colonists and the Native Americans. The Puritans assumed when the smallpox epidemic hit it was God’s sign for them to take over the land. They also used it to justify taking over everything and robbing sacred Indian graves.
His whole life was plagued with depression. His drinking cost him his education, his colleagues, and almost his marriage. He considered himself hopeless until a visit from a friend changed his whole perspective on life. William Griffith Wilson, or Bill W., was a man that has helped change the lives of over 2 million people. He fought through his depression on countless occasions and found a way to help others like him.
There were a lot of American men who had perfect influence on people’s mind of American society. Jonathan Edward and Benjamin Franklin were two of those writers, who were the most important and intellectual men, who left behind many admirable works for the future society. In spite of them being so intelligent, they have some different and similar views in terms of morality, personal responsibility, human nature, and limits of human knowledge and inform people how to live a better life. In addition, they were different in terms of religious inclinations. Benjamin Franklin and Jonathan Edward were both philosopher and had similar views in terms of informing people the right way to live in order to be successful and get salvation by reforming their mind in their life.

William Paterson was born December 24, 1745 in County Antrim, Ireland. He served as the state’s attorney general from 1776 to 1783. When he was a toddler, he and his family moved to America and around 1750 they moved and settled in Princeton, New Jersey, there his father found success as a merchant. William was educated in private schools. In 1763, he earned his bachelor’s degree from the college of New Jersey.
The Great Awakening The Great Awakening sew a seed of independence in American’s minds because it promoted the religious tolerance, led to the abolishment of the belief of single, authoritarian religious rules, and evoked a sense of self-governance. During this significant period, many charismatic preachers such as Jonathan Edward and George Whitefield emerged, being enthusiastic about delivering their messages with their distinct preaching styles. The increased religious tolerance in the colonies during the Great Awakening resulted in the diversity of the denominations.
