So many employees of railway companies and contractors have been killed since 1991 (HSE, 2005) and in the past years there has been only one year (1997) in which no track worker was killed at work (RSSB 2005:158). The modern workplace can be a dangerous place with many potential safety hazards adversely affecting both physical and psychological health (Levi 2011). The physical hazards are characteristics of the work environment that are extremely dangerous, it can either be because of the way in which the environment is designed, or because employees fail to follow safe practices. It is unfortunate that injuries and illnesses are far too common an occurrence in the workplace. They can be prevented, though accidents happen. Accidents are an unfortunate incidents that happens unexpectedly and unintentionally, typically resulting in damage or injury.
