The dependency of oil has grown to an alarming number. This valuable commodity can only last for a short amount of time. What happens when the world is completely depleted of this liquid gold that is used in our everyday lives? The documentary The End of Suburbia highlights how dependent America has become on oil products. The Documentary shows the actuality of how long the Earth can sustain the amount of oil depletion, peak oil consequences and environmental effects of oil use.

The 17th Amendment of the Constitution once it was ratified by a majority of states in 1913 changed the way Senators were elected in the voting process. Prior to the ratification of the amendment, the founding fathers saw it fit that the state legislators be invested with the authority to assign states their chosen Senators. The debate on whether the amendment was significant or not has been argued on among scholars and critics alike. One can say the fact that a debate exists at all answers that question itself. The hysteria behind the attachment of the 17th amendment is that it sets precedent for future changes to laws concerning the balance of power between the states and our central government established by the countries Founding Fathers.

Behind the driving force of change lies a quiet little thing called time. In The Last of the Mohicans by James Fenimore Cooper, change surrounds the story as the changing times and the end of many Native tribes dominance over this land when European settlers claimed the Natives land as their own. Louis L'amour's The Cherokee Trail, describes the women’s role in the West that is redefined by Mary Breydon who not only does everything a woman can do but most everything a man can do as well.

In the 1950’s the American economy was booming due to the conclusion of World War II. Economic prosperity transformed family life and people put more emphasis on the individual. Television programs represented how people should live the ideal life. With many changes in culture people began to have a different perspective on life. In the 1998 film, “Pleasantville” directed by Gary Ross and the novel, “The Catcher in the Rye” written by J.D. Salinger both depict teenage culture of the 1950s.

Conformity is gradually oppressing the world in which we live in. This ideal is prominently illustrated in the film Pleasantville which is directed, and produced by Gary Ross. Pleasantville is a great demonstration of the dangers of abiding by society’s expectations, and the freedoms that come with rebelling to these expectations and embracing change. Gary Ross uses several literary techniques such as; colour (symbolism), and character development to indicate the lack of creativity, and originality in society. Throughout the film, Ross illustrates how obstructive conformity can be to society, and how rewarding rebelling to societal norms can be for not only self growth, but societal advancement as well.

Throughout history, philosophers and civilizations have pondered the role and importance of change, and came to different conclusions. Plato and Aristotle had different views on change and what it meant, while the Hindu, Buddhist, and Mayan cultures viewed change on a much bigger scale. Their understanding of change and how they evaluated it ultimately had a big impact on how they lived their lives.

Change means to make or become different from a previous state. As an individual grows up, they go through many changes, especially in behavior, character, decisions, friends and body that can be internal or external. It pushes us out of our comfort zone and lets us experience and explore our world. Change is inevitable and many characters in To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee display their change through their actions and choices. Jean Louise Finch, known as Scout goes through a significant change in her character and behaviour throughout the novel.

When we think about what makes up a gang there is so many attributes that it could consist of, there is one thing for sure and that is that the majority of gangs share the three same desires which are money, power and respect and they’ll get it by any means necessary. This essay will focus on how contemporary gangs have changed tremendously from those of the 1950s and 60s. I will draw upon the work of many academics including that of Albert Cohen and his idea that gangs are made up of ‘delinquent boys’. I will mainly be studying gangs in the UK with reference to American gangs and will explore how they have changed over time in regards to ethnicity, class, gender, representations, crime types and the influence of technology.

Change occurs every day involuntarily. When people encounter change they are limited to only two points of views on it, negatively or positively. Some may react by panicking and going into denial whereas others may try to adapt to it and make the best out of the situation. It can affect one’s life drastically depending on the situation and how they portray it. In the movie “Rivers and Tides” and the story “Metamorphosis,” and the passage, “Simplexity”, change is initially portrayed as positive, but after a series of events it becomes overthrown by negativity.
