A dystopian novel is about a future where citizens are corrupted into pledging their loyalty to the government by means of watching and brainwashing them. The government in that novel are called the Party. They use power for means of manipulation to, consequently, strike fear in their citizens. 1984 by George Orwell compares with the modern-day USA and Chinese governments. Additionally, articles/sources will be used to highlight the comparisons with the Party’s invasion, and justification. The Party uses technology to invade the privacy of their citizens justifying their actions through power that brings about fear, and manipulation which is compared with the modern-day Chinese and United States governments. For this reason, the Party uses their power of capturing potential thought criminals and forcing them into obliging to the Party by brainwashing them to prevent manipulation in other people to fade away and create rebellions. To fortify the idea of the Party brainwashing people, the narrator in 1984 mentioned, “He knew now what had changed in her. Her face was sallower, and there was a long scar, partly hidden by the hair, across her forehead and temple” (Orwell 368). Julia’s temple had a long scar which proves that the Party cut open her temple to attempt to erase certain things in her brain. Therefore, they used manipulation to enforce the idea of devotion within people. While the Party manipulate their people, they also manipulate history. During the novel, the Party have always rewritten history from the indication of history influencing the thoughts of people, hence, the manipulation the citizens. Evidence of the statement was pointed by the author by mentioning, “All history was a palimpsest, scraped clean and reinscribed exactly as often as was necessary. In no case would it have been possible, once the deed was done, to prove that any falsification had taken place” (Orwell 51). To begin with, the Party has changed history whenever it was necessary to manipulate people, also, to further justify their action by means of manipulation they erase any sort of falsification that can be provided to show that the Party altered the history.
