Charles Dickens’ novel “A Christmas Carol” shows the main character Scrooge as being haunted by three spirits on Christmas Eve. Dickens presents these supernatural entities with historic appearances, which have a strong reflection on the character and development of Scrooge. This is often overlooked on first read. The first example of this is the appearance of The Ghost of Christmas Past, which is used by Dickens to physicalize the mentality of Scrooge. The spirit is described as “like a child” and represents the child that is still inside him; It is his childhood that caused him to hate the festive season and he still holds the grudge, that being “a lonely boy” during Christmas set. The phantom is also said to be “yet not so like a child as

In the beginning of A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens, Ebenezer Scrooge’s view on Christmas is negative and he is characterized as being unsympathetic, uncharitable, grouchy. To begin, there are three different spirits who visit Scrooge at various times in the night. The spirits help make Scrooge realize the consequences of his actions and they change Scrooge's view on Christmas. For example, Scrooge is visited by the Spirit of Christmas Past who shows him his childhood and the actions that made him who he is now. As Scrooge observes the past he is filled with regret and wants to re-choose to do things.
That represents that although they are surround by necessary things it is not what they want or think it's best. That is why this also represents to Scrooge's character. The Ghost Yet to Come is the quite ghost that visits Scrooge. Scrooge asks the ghost who he is, but he never gets an answer, he gets even more frightened. His old business partner, Marley, visited Scrooge and informed him that three spirits would visit him. The three spirits: The Ghost of Christmas Past, the Ghost of Christmas Present, and the Ghost of Christmas Yet to Come helped Scrooge realize how cruel he is and transforms him into a cheerful man. This story could seem like it was about an old man named Scrooge who doesn’t like Christmas. The ghost takes him back to his happy old memories, which boosted his mood and changed his spirit about Christmas. This indeed did happen, but that is not what the story was about. Dickens wanted the viewers to take a deeper look and see how the upper class treated the poor and the major issues of poverty. Also, Scrooge was an individual who struggled with his identity inside, as Matthew Arnold explained.
After all his adventures, unlike Mr. Halborough, Scrooge mentions how he is“ not the man I was.” (Dickens 74) and shows throughout his story how the appearance of the three ghosts shaped his new perspective on Christmas and the overall idea of giving
“Look, you, sir, a school ahead. The schoolroom is not quite deserted. A solitary child, neglected by his friends, is left there still.” (Horovitz p. 760). This is one of the many important parts of the drama, The Christmas Carol.
In the dramatized version of A Christmas Carol by Frederick Gaines, based on the novella written by Charles Dickens, The Second Spirit metaphorically refers to Scrooge as, “An insect on a leaf pronouncing that there is more to life among his hungry brothers in the dust”(234). In his home, Scrooge is able to eat whatever his heart desires, while others go hungry. Broad and cozy, Scrooge’s home shelters him from the icy climate. Owning a business, Scrooge has an employee at his feet because of his high rank in society. Like an insect on a leaf, Scrooge has access to an abundance of food, lives in a cozy home, and enjoys a high status in society.
At the beginning of the novel “A Christmas carol” Scrooge can be interpreted as an archetypal villain (an extreme stereotype of a villain), this is inferred when Dickens describes Scrooge as an “old sinner”. The quote “old sinner” links in with the description of a villain as a sinner often someone who commits immoral acts regularly whilst disregarding Christian doctrine, considering the time the book was published (1800) committing a sin was a villainous act to do; therefore implying to the reader that Scrooge is a going to be a villainous character throughout the novel. When Macbeth is first introduced, Shakespeare chooses to present Macbeth as heroic archetypal male, completely contrasting with how Scrooge is presented as a villain at the

Contrasting Scrooge to other characters in the novella proves this theme. (2) A kind and thankful character is one who values family over wealth and is grateful to others. Ebenezer Scrooge, Bob Cratchit, and Scrooge’s dynamic character best prove this theme. (3a)
“The righteousness of the blameless keeps his ways straight, but the wicked falls by his own wickedness”(Prov. 11:5). The story, “A Christmas Carol”, is about a cold-hearted man named Scrooge who transforms himself into a jolly, kind man when three Ghosts teach Scrooge about the spirit of Christmas. In the story, Charles Dickens illustrates the theme of how no one is past redemption through the transformation of Scrooge’s personality by the lessons of the Spirits. At the beginning of the story, Scrooge’s selfish personality is revealed, and the Ghost of Christmas Past comes and shows him the memories and truth of his life long ago.
" Is that so, Spirit?" ( Dickens 1 ). This quote takes place right when the Phantom shows up. Scrooge is prepared to see what he will see in the future , because he is seeking to find change in his personality through the ghosts .
