Fate In Paulo Coelho's The Alchemist

Adversity occurs in everyone’s life. The book, The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho that transpires before technology, about a shepherd named Santiago, who has a dream about a treasure in Egypt. The movie, Good Will Hunting transpires in 1997, about a man named Will who had a horrible childhood but would read to escape the problems of his childhood. As he grew older he turned out a genius but did not want the knowledge he had. When personal legends and goals come into question, adversity will always come right around the corner.

Revelations and transformations are the most important part of the Hero’s Journey. Without it, there’s no lesson learned or progress made. In Count of Monte Cristo, The Odyssey, and The Alchemist, the three heroes have many psychological, behavioral, and physical transformations. They all have different experiences, but learn something and change in the end. Edmond Dantes, Odysseus, and Santiago had profound revelations and transformations in their journeys.

The definition of fate is, the development of events beyond a persons control, regarded as determined by supernatural power. Fate is something that is embedded in every human being. Not only does it shaped what we go through daily, but it gives us the final mold of what our life will turn out to be like. We often look to others and to ourselves to search for what pieces can help lead us to our fate. In the book the alchemist Santiago is constantly trying to find his directions to fate. He searches by himself and through many other people. As Santiago tries to figure out his fate, we're destiny, he goes through a lot of hardships including getting robbed. But he knows that in the end he will reach his fate and didn't need a little help getting

The decision was difficult as both options don’t provide him a steady choice. As being a shepherd does not promise him to be with the merchant daughter and for finding a treasure he need to give up his well settled life. But at the end he chose to find treasure as it allows him to purse his personal legend or dram of travelling throughout the world. He always considers his choice before taking a decision this can be seen through this conversation of Santiago with himself, “Here, I am between my flock and my treasure, the boy thought. He had to choose between something he had become accustomed to and something he wanted to have. There was also the merchant’s daughter, she wasn’t important as his flock, because she didn’t depend on him. Maybe she didn’t remember him. He was sure that it made no difference to her on which day he appeared: for her, every day was the same, and when each day is the same as the next, it’s because people fail to recognize the good things that happen in their lives every day that the sun rises (27).” This shows that his decisions are based on his subjectivity and he look for practical reasons in the process of decision-making. He also associates his dream of ravelling freely with wind, as wind is not restricted. This also shows that when he decides something he follows that and lives with it

At many times in people’s lives, they consider giving up. This is also true for Santiago, the protagonist in Paulo Coelho's fantasy novel The Alchemist. Santiago is on a journey to find a hidden treasure he saw in a dream. Along this journey he continues to contemplate whether he should just give up, or continue his adventure. By continuing he finds his true inner strength. In the story, the author shows the importance of perseverance, and how to face the many obstacles that people are presented in their lives to complete their goal.

Omens come in many different forms, shapes and sizes. They can be living or inanimate objects. If you’re not looking close enough, you might not be able to see them or chose to believe they are actually there. In Paulo Coelho’s novel The Alchemist, Santiago discovers many omens on his personal legend journey such as the King of Salem, Stones and the Crystal Merchant. All of these people and objects helped guide Santiago through his journey to get to the pyramids.

This is illuminated when the Alchemist says, “‘There is only one thing that makes a dream impossible to achieve: the fear of failure’” (141). This particular moment shows that even though Santiago has both the ability and the knowledge to achieve his dream, it is impossible to attain it if he fears even attempting to reach it. Consequently, this fear acts as his enemy and a barrier that stands in the way of the meaningful and happy life he is destined to accomplish. Furthermore, another one of his fears is the fear of losing what he believes he has already earned. ”He reminded himself that he had been a shepherd and that he could be a shepherd again. Fatima was more important than his treasure” (95). Santiago is willing to drop everything

Therefore in the Alchemist, the most important thing is personal legend. Everything is based off Santiago’s personal legend, if he wouldn’t of became a shepherd the book wouldn’t be all about him following his personal legend and trying to figure out what his was. Santiago has to figure out a bunch of new things that lend his to his personal

Santiago is a young boy who yearns for adventure and purpose in his life.from a young age he knows he wants to see the world and becomes a shepherd to experience new places. Santiago still struggles to find meaning and purpose throughout his many years of travel though. It's not until he goes on the journey to follow his personal legend that he truly develops as a character. The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho, challenges readers to acknowledge their self-worth and realize they are strongest when they love themselves.

He is constantly slammed with adversity, he gets a job at the crystal shop after losing his money. ““I can clean up those glasses in the window, if you want,” said the boy. … “you did not have to do any cleaning,” he (the shopkeeper) said. “Koran requires me to feed a hungry person.” … “Do you want to go to work for me” the merchant asked.” (Coelho 45 5, Coelho 46 4 9) When santiago losses his money he does not give up he learns and finds a man to help in exchange for food and in the end gets a job that he can do while learning the language of the locals, finding a way to egypt and developing his identity. This job allows him to make money and the strength to carry on in his journey. Later on in his journey he is faced even greater adversity and the same thing happens he is dejected and lost but picks himself up and preservers. “ “he is going to transform himself into the wind, just to demonstrate his powers. If he cant we humbly offer our lives for the honor of the tribe.” … The boy was shaking with fear, but the alchemist helped him out of the tent. … the alchemist continued, “usually the threat of death makes people a lot more aware of their lives.”” (Coelho 140 6 8, Coelho 142 2) Just like before Santiago is afraid and doesn't know what to do in a situation of adversity. But he does not give up he perseveres and developes

The theme of treasure appears early on in the story and inspires Santiago’s journey. One night while herding his flock, he dreams that there is buried treasure waiting for him at the pyramids of Egypt. After seeking advice from a gypsy who interprets his dream, she again confirms that at the pyramids of Egypt, “there you will find your treasure” (14). The Alchemist is a famous book written by Paulo Coelho. It’s about a shepherd named Santiago who travels from his homeland Spain to the Pyramids in Egypt. He does this to find a treasure he was told about. Along his hard journey, he meets some people along the way like a gypsy woman and a king in disguise who all direct him towards his quest. He doesn’t let the obstacles stop him toward his goal and eventually he finds his treasure. He found love with a woman in the desert, a treasure chest buried under an old tree in an old abandoned church where he first was, and a lesson learned about how the world and the people surrounding him have affected him in his life. I think the main theme of this story is self-discovery and how it can affect one’s life in the real world.
