For instance, in a study done by Dr. Katherine Young and Paul Nathanson, they concluded that men are additionally derided, rejected, and even abused in media in addition to being unintelligent, and that these same actions would never be done in the media with female characters in our culture (Abernethy 351). This is a prime example of gender inequality in our TV media nowadays, which shows the lack of television programs with intelligent men and women combined nowadays. This also shows that if a show featured an unintelligent woman and an intelligent man (its vice versa for many shows nowadays), it would be either be heavily criticized by feminist groups or receive no positive support in modern America culture. Astonishingly, even many men would be not in favor for that idea of a show, since it would ridicule a woman the same way the media ridicules men on modern television programs. This is irritating to many men because the modern media allows programs that depict men negatively to air on a regular basis, resulting in gender inequality in the media.
They endure the sexual attention of their male coaches or peers because of fear, desire for athletic reward, low self-esteem and ignorance of who to turn to for help. Typically, abused athletes keep quiet because they fear that they will be accused of consenting or just make up a story. Recent studies by Women Sport International indicate that sexual harassment and abuse is just as much a problem in sport as it is elsewhere in society. Many sports organisations do not have adequate mechanisms in place to help protect frightened athletes and to exclude harassers and abusers. . It is not true when some people think that if the victim did not resist it does not count as abuse.
In the end she claims that the removal is necessary due to its unjust laws that oppresses women. She continues to claim that women should be treated equally just as American citizens; should be free and equal. To compare; both writers express their concerns and thoughts in their own writings but addresses towards different issues. In addition, they both use Pathos and Logos to convey
Domestic violence is also very present in the aboriginal community.
In the article, “Move Over Boys”, by Sara Maratta, she argues that women have very limited roles in the sports industry, and that the lack of gender equality is present because of the preexisting stereotypes about women’s involvement in sports. According to Maratta “Female athletes are just as capable and accomplished as the men, yet fans do not give them the chance to prove that they deserve to be admired and followed” (Maratta 539). Maratta's point is that our society depreciates women in sports, because we have the misconception that men are suppose to be better than women in everything they do. Maratta also claims that female athletes must look feminine at all times to be acknowledged in the sports industry (Maratta 539). In other words,
Similarly, she discusses how many female directors were afraid to even attempt to direct a Wonder Woman film (149). Altogether, Howell argues many valid points along with examples of the gender bias in popular culture. With her focus on DC Comics and their failed attempts to market and produce a film for a character, such as Wonder Woman, was a solid representation of the gender bias that has and continues to exist in popular culture. Charlotte E. Howell argued many great points in her article, “Tricky” Connotations: Wonder Woman as DC’s Brand Disruptor.” Just as DC Comics had
As a young thirteen-year-old called Adam Goodes an “ape” during the 2013 home and away season against the Collingwood. This issue brought a lot of talk up against the racial abuse in the game of Australian Rules Football. Although Adam Goodes said that that what the girl said was very offensive, Goodes did not want to press charges of any kind “as [she] is only a young girl as does not understand what she said, and how it could be offensive to Goodes” reported the Herald Sun. This discrimination case showed how the AFL society is today. Although recently in the 2016 season, Eddie Betts had been hit with a banana by a Port Adelaide fan who also had implied that Betts was an “ape”.
The confederate flag was banned due to people finding it offensive. The government did not like the fact that it was a rebel banner. The citizens did not like it because it displayed rebellion of the war that had happened during the Civil War. - they think no one was showing respect for the veterans that were in the war. Another reason that the confederate was banned is because people thought it was a rebellious flag.
Erin, The part of you post regarding woman being sports fans shed light on how gender norms have conditioned society (and me) to think woman are not generally interested in sports. I’m not a sports fan, and I don’t make attempts to pretend that I do; because of this I’m often in disbelieve when I hear woman talk about watch sports. During the Cavs season several female co-workers would mention watching the game, and in my head I would think you’re only watching the game because you’re husband is interested, or because it’s the big talk right now. This is terrible on my part for stereotyping that woman may not be genuinely interested in sports. The interpretation I have is common, and woman are often accused of simply engaging in sports to appear
It is evident that equality and equity between genders, males and females, has had its struggles. This struggle to promote fairness has been expressed through various mouvements such as from the suffragettes emerging in the late 20th and early 21st century, and the recent He for She movement to bring both genders to work together as one. Despite these efforts, in the hockey world, male domination inhibits female athletic success to reach such high level. This is displayed through history, funds and media. Earlier times imposed that women work less on their athleticism.
In addition, the opponents of Title IX might also agree that football should be withdrawn from the Title IX’s list as women do not play football. Nevertheless, before making the statements that a sport should be eliminated in the Title IX equation due the lack of one gender’s participation, one should consider other sports where there are only a small number of men compared to the women participants. Particularly in volleyballs and field hockey, they are males and females player. However in this case, men participants are outnumbered by the females athletes (Zimmerman). So, should volleyball and hockey be removed from Title IX privileges too?
Colin Kaepernick a form NFL quarterback sparked controversy when he kneeled during the national anthem. Nancy Armour a writer for USA Today explained why Kaepernick took a knee over racism and discrimination because, “people don’t like to address that and they don’t like to address what the root of this protest is”. What Armour is explaining is that most people don’t want to address a problem at all and when there is a problem as big as racism in the present most wont deal with it. I think there could be better ways that to get the point across than Kaepernick did; on the other hand, it did spark a lot of talk about the subject and bring it to the eyes of the public. Kaepernick provides a good explanation for his actions when he told the press,
Also, if any professional sport teams were forced to change their names, it would have a huge negative impact on commercial products. Lingebach addresses in his article how “in another sign of support, the majority of Washington, DC fans would not purchase new team merchandise if the Redskins changed their name” (qtd. in Lingebach 2). If Native Americans and most of the National Football League fans infer that the name is not derogatory, the Redskins should not have to change their name. The Kansas City Chiefs have been lucky enough not to face the same issues as the Washington
When I see football on the television it makes me think how does the helmets protect much impact, on their heads from being tackled. Is football worth losing brain cells? Well no it can protect the skull from being pulverized, but not help much with brain cells. My personal feelings about football is that it is not worth injuring yourself for devotees.
The way female athletes are portrayed in the media is something that I take personal interest in,because I am one so I sympythaize. I may not be competing in the olympics and fighting for the medias attention equvialent to the attention male athletes recieve. I think that the lack of athletic recognition of female in the media not only plays a huge role in motivating a woman to continue her athletic goals but it also gives motivation to young aspiring female athletes. Photos of successful male athletes show them in body revealing poses, while women who do the same often potrayed into being less important, romanticized, and sexualized.
