Carter was elected into office when America was looking for a great change in politics but soon after instances like the hostage crisis, Americans began to realize that Carter was not the type of representative that they wanted. The Carter administration and the State Department officials thought that the problem would be over quickly and the hostages would be returned quickly, giving Carter’s image a boost. Unsurprisingly, Carter’s political needs matched poorly with those of Ayatollah Khomeini, the Shah Muslim religious leader of the time. Americans pressured Carter to handle the issue in an American manner with gusto and military force as a small group of university students managed to humiliate and humble the “American tiger.” Carter’s strategy included sending a letter to Khomeini, calling for the resolvement of issues of Iran-America issues but the Carter administration quickly learned that it would take a great deal to get the Ayatollah’s attention.
Hawaii was in American interest since the early 1820’s. but at that time the Americans only cared about manifest destiny instead of colonizing in other continents especially with other baby countries directly on the border of America. In January 1893, the farmers of Hawaii revolted against the Hawaiian Queen Liliuokalani, at the same time, the citizens of Hawaii wanted the Americans to protect them, President William McKinley hadn’t given approval for the military to enter Hawaii, the marines stormed into Hawaii then raised the American flag. The queen was forced to renounce her throne, then it was up to the American government to decide where to go with the recent turn of events.
Considering the conflicts with Asia, the attack on Pearl Harbor was not surprising. The United States provoked the Japanese into doing the attack because of an embargo. Petroleum and metal were two resources that Japan did not have enough of. The United States received knowledge that Japan wanted to attack but just didn’t get to the issue in time. Japan was very dependent on the Americans, the two met on two different occasions to try and settle the dispute, but neither of them were willing to compromise.
Prior to the national adoption of the Constitution, the issues that lied with the American approach to the Barbary Pirates mainly lied with the Articles of Confederation. These governing documents prevented the United States from creating a standing navy, which was considered, by some, to be a threat to liberty. Beyond that, with the nation’s inability to trade in the Mediterranean region, it was a difficult to even secure enough funds to be able to produce a naval force capable of protecting commercial vessels. However, once the Constitution was instituted and the country was able to begin production of federal warships, the problem of the war changed to whether or not the conflict was constitutional. Frank Lambert notes, “Aware that he was not engaging the enemy under a congressional declaration of war,
Hawaii is a small nation of tribes in the Pacific Ocean that have be isolated from the rest of the world until now. We respect your ways of life but refuse to accept them. By annexing Hawaii the United States is taking away the rights of our people. We have their own government and way of life. The Hawaiian Patriotic League of the Hawaiian Islands does not support the annexation of our home lands.
Roosevelt did everything he could to engage the USA in the war but he could not declare war, only the Congress has the power to do that. So, he had to wait until the Isolationist members of Congress, who did not want to get involved in the war, were angered by the Japanese sneak attack on Pearl Harbor and agreed to vote in favor of going to war. The USA did not at first declare war on Germany - Germany declared war on the USA first.
After watching the film called ‘Act of War’, I again felt that countries’ do not stand for justice but only pursue their national interests. The reason why Hawaii was so desirable to the United States was the imperialistic characteristic that America had at that time. Even a small island or land is into the consideration of taking over. In detail, the Americans wanted to use the land as their military base and a strategic spot for expanding their imperialism to Asia. The fact that American continent was far away from Asian and European continent, made them realize that in order to empower their global power they need to first dominate the closest countries, even a small land that they consider it trivial.
The impressment of American sailors to forcefully be a part of the Royal Navy sparked tensions between the British. Under the British authority, the Royal Navy took unaware sailors from American merchant ships. The justification of impressment was based on the concept of British Americans citizenship. Sailors were subject to impressment due to the lack of evidence of citizenship and previous citizenship from the motherland. The American seamen were required to serve on behalf of the British army to fight against the United States.
If the proles and the outer-party members conspire together there would be a mass of people to revolt, and people to lead that revolution. In opposition to this theory, Big Brother has manipulated the outer-party into believing that the proles are less of humans; thus, a social gap between the two classes was created. The people of Oceania are being restricted from communicating between classes. Big Brother forced the outer-party members to act completely loyal to the principles of INGSOC, making it seem as if any one of them could report a prole to the thoughtpolice. Both social classes are frightened by the other, and little do the people of Oceania know, they are doing
The high economic requirement to vote created by the signing of the Bayonet Constitution is one of the economic effects. Most Hawaiians couldn’t reach the requirement for money, leaving only the American and Europeans on Hawaii having the ability to vote. This correlates to the overthrow because it weakened the Native Hawaiians power on the government because they weren’t as wealthy as most foreigners on Hawaii. Another economic effect of the Bayonet Constitution was after King Kalakaua’s powers were taken from him, the only thing Kalakaua could do was to renew the Reciprocity Treaty with the United States. The renewal of the Reciprocity Treaty continued the duty-free importations of sugar.
United States operations in the Pacific region during the war conflict with the Empire of Japan was comprised of a resourceful employment of sea, air, and land assets and a set of strategic doctrines that in the end resulted on the defeat and surrender of the Japanese forces and United States victory. Sea power and its attainment from a United States perspective played a critical and vital role in the Pacific conflict. It can be argued, based on a Mahanian perspective, that the rising of United States Forces victoriously in the war effort was the chief result of the maritime superiority and a considerable command presence at sea. Nonetheless, after the Coral Sea and Midway engagements, a more Corbettian doctrine, specifically during the Central Pacific Campaigns, is exhibited mainly by the utilization of air, surface and subsurface assets and tactical employment of sea units in order to deny the Japanese attainment of command at sea.
Understanding the culture of a nation, people, or group one must immerse themselves and experience the nation’s arts, beliefs, customs, practices, values, and social behaviors. By attending a cultural event, an individual is able to experience firsthand the diverse offerings of culture and artistic expression found in a community. At the moment I reside in upstate New York, Albany to be exact and there are no cultural events to attend; well none that are occurring the remainder of my Humanities course. I decided to choose a place I always wanted to visit, do some research online to learn a little about their culture. I chose Hawaii as the place to visit and after some probing, I become aware of how rich their culture is.
The Hawaiian Islands are an incredible place to visit and explore. I have visited there twice now, and the sights are amazing. This assignment came up right after I got back from my last trip, and one thing that had my interest while I was there was the islands’ formations. Flying in the first time, I enjoyed being able to see the islands come into view after being over water for 6 hours. Doing snorkeling adventures, I visited Molokini Crater.
