The classical Greeks contributed to, and influenced Western Civilization in several ways. For example, the classical Greeks contributed in many ways in the areas of the arts, both in visual pictures and physical sculptures. They also advanced greatly in both mathematics and science, most notably geometry and medical sciences. As well as this, they influenced Western Civilization through their philosophical thoughts and studies. While all of these contributions are significant to Western Civilization, the most important contribution is the development of a democratic government.
Once even compared to barbarians by the Persian this great society emerged in little time. The Greek alphabet came from Phoenicians whom they traded with; temples were inspired by the architecture of Ancient Egypt. Classical Greece appropriated numerous ideas and concepts from the east, and made them not only theirs but became the heart of western culture (77). According to Long (1994), “The term mythology may describe a certain body of myths, for example, Greek, African, or Scandinavian, or it may refer to the study of myths” (p.694). These collections of narratives are superior when it comes to influencing different areas of knowledge. There are numerous types of mythology, but Ancient Greece is the one that has given an immense influence on modern society.
For example the Temple of Artemis has Gorgons Sculptures that come from the banister or the face of the temples entrance. As time moved on so did the improvements of architectural design. Orientalizing Period in Greece started in 700BCE and ended in 600BCE. This marked the start of Greek architecture due to the huge influx of trade which brought in new ideas from Egypt and NE. “Greeks attributed almost all of the great achievements to Daedalus-master of all arts Daedalic style.” Also trade brought Greeks into direct contact with monumental stone architecture.
Without a doubt, Ancient Greece has had great influence on the formation and development of western culture and civilization. Athens, arguably the greatest city-state of Ancient Greece, brought forth democracy into the world. It was during the golden age of Ancient Greece that Philosophy, Science, Math, Literature, and the Arts started to make their mark on western civilization. Greek thinkers established the modern fields we now take for granted. It was because of their cultural and intellectual revolutions that the world as we know it now exists.
From Greek mythology, we can learn about the favorable characteristics of humans, such as their behavior and valuable skills that were approved of by the ancient Greek society. We can also learn about what was viewed as immoral or of little value. In addition, reviewing the Greek myths allows us to determine that the Greek society was generally a patriarchal society and agricultural and war were strong elements that shaped the ancient Greek society. Greek mythology and religion were integral parts of the ancient Greek society. The Greeks followed a polytheist religion in which multiple gods represented various aspects of the nature as well as skills practiced by mankind.
Hello in this paper Im going to define, discuss Political Economy in Ancient Greece. Politcal Economy is the earlier name for economics , the Ancient Greeks came up with the name but in the late 19th Century economists decided economics is a better shorter name. The economy in Ancient Greeks were based on Agriculture,Crafts, Trade, Taxation and Currency . Agriculture was imporant to the Ancient Greeks because it employed up to 80% of the Greek population. Agriculture consisted of olive trees, grapevines, herbs, vegetables, and oil producing plants .
Western Civilization is what resulted after many cultures came together and mixed which later spread around Europe and America. Rome and Greece are the main cultures that achieved major goals while developing. Throughout history, the Roman Empire, as well as Greece, was able to develop many cultural ideas that influenced today’s way of thinking. Among all of those ideas, the ones of science, government, mathematics, literature, and others, are the baseline of cultural diversity.
