In northern Italy, the culture of the Etruscan’s took hold around 800 BC, while the Greeks were settling in southern Italy from 700 to 600 BC, mostly in Apulia, Calabria and Sicily. Rome was created/founded by Romulus and Remus in the main part of Etruscan Italy in 735 BC. Rome expanded its territories into the becoming of the Roman Empire. They actually ended up naming the Italian peninsula “Italia”. Italis flourished under the Roman Empire, which actually ended in 476 AD with the death of their emperor Augustus.
The first reason the Dark Ages were not as dark as the name claims for them to be, is because during the Dark Ages there were tons of advances in education. The information in Doc A that claims “Europe suffered a decline in commerce and manufacturing, in education, in literature and the arts and in almost all that makes possible a high civilization.” is completely biased. And that the Dark Ages “Did not support learning” (Background Information) which is completely untrue. During the Dark Ages, there were still people learning and teaching. One of them being a monk named Richer, who “went to the town of Chartres, in what is today France, to study.”
About 1280 C.E. a new distinct era, the Renaissance, arose and replaced the turbulent and dark Middle Ages. This new era brought unique ideas and a rebirth of Greek and Roman cultures. Universities and schools were founded for learning, Renaissance people were well rounded in studies, and enlightenment thinkers of the time held strong beliefs that there was a Renaissance. From its beginnings in Italy, the Renaissance spread throughout Europe, and furthermore differencing Renaissance Europeans from the religious medieval people.

One third of the whole population in Europe died from the effects of the Dark Age. The Dark Ages started after the collapse of the Western Roman Empire.
The time before the Renaissance was a time of darkness. During the middle ages there was nothing but disease and religion, which why it is known as the dark ages. The Middle Ages took place 500 CE to about 1350 and the primary players of Europe were the Catholic Church and the Pope. Reason why everyone was against each other and made everything confusing. But the Renaissance was the high peak of European history because that’s when art and literature started to evolve and then science started to finally come into the picture.
The Renaissance reached to an end in the late sixteenth mid seventeenth century. The churches loss a lot of power and grasp of feeling of independence, human expression and investigation led to envy, treason, murder, violence and theft. But than again the Renaissance were the ones that painted the way to a lot of achievements and inventions in a lot of different areas of culture, society, science, religion and modern day life. A lot more advances were proficient during this era that kept on being increased in value, considered and developed in modern day. The Renaissance had a huge influenced on the establishment America was based on and keeps on effecting how American culture and society exist today.
In the 1300s, Petrarch, an Italian scholar who coined the term "dark age" after the all of Rome during the 500s through the 1500s because he thought it was a chaotic time.(Movie Talk "dark age") The "dark age" took place during all the Crusades. This did help make population smaller and it did increase food supply. This illustrates that Europe was not in a "dark age" as it will be explained. Europe was not in a "dark age" really and it did improve Europe's food and population grew bigger which meant more farming.
During this time period Europe fell into the Dark Ages because the empire of Rome crumbled. Stability, advances in technology, and culture were lost throughout Europe. This caused mass chaos throughout the vast empire. In 410, the city of Rome was invaded by the Visigoths. This was the beginning of the end of the Western Roman Empire.
A major reason that Europe began the escape from the Dark Ages by the High Middle Ages was the improvement in their economy. By 1300 there was lots of trading in Europe for example, Italian states trading with northern states and Spanish states trading towards the silk roads (Doc F). Trade changed from being bason on manorial systems to being city-based, widespread trade. The trade routes allowed cities and towns to spring up along them and soon Europe was involved in intra-continental trade, which at long last ended the Dark

The best description of this time period can be represented by four terms, the Golden Age, the Dark Age, the Age of Faith and the Age of Feudalism. Each time caused for a significant change in society that had a tremendous impact. From the troubling times of invasions and destructions to a time of prosperity and progression, the best terms that describe the Middle Ages are the Dark Ages and the Golden Ages.
Medieval Ages were known as the “Dark Ages” for an evident reason. Ninety percent of the entire population weren’t born into noble blood. People could not access the education that the higher nobles could. This left the peasants vulnerable to the clergy that translated the bible since they did not care for the worth of the peasants. When the peasants took a stand this changed many aspects of worldviews.
The Dark Ages consisted of invasion, and loss of trade and government. “The barbarians have broken through the ramparts. The Saracen [Moors] invasions have spread in successive waves over the South. There is no longer any trade, only unceasing terror...society has no longer any government,” (Doc. 1). These problems led to the decline and therefore this period of time was named the Dark Ages.
After the Middle Ages, Europe went through a rebirth of literature and classical learning. This time period was known as the Renaissance. Also during this time period, The Age of Exploration had begun. Europe was trying to discover new and faster ways of reaching India. In the process, they found the Americas, along with other routes to Africa and Asia.
The period of time that spans from around the 1400s to about 1700, otherwise known as the Renaissance was the rebirth and awakening for new ideas and inventions. It was vastly different from the previous era known as the Middle Ages, for a variety of reasons. Different advances were made in the Renaissance and, people became more educated in science, math, and literature. Ignorance about the world and nature was no longer the norm for the average person. During the Renaissance, a majority of the population were no longer illiterate, which in turn influenced the populace to become curious and ask questions.
After the fall of the Roman Empire in 476 CE, it led into the Middle Ages. Commonly referred as the Dark Age, Europe was in a time of reformation. Many have used the “Dark Age” as a synonym for the Middle Ages, due to the lack of education and unethical actions that occurred during 500 CE to 1500 CE. The Middle Ages weren’t so dark as it seemed, it was a duration of reconstruction, acquired learning, agricultural boom, technology improvements and architecture.
