In the book Beowulf translated by Burton Raffel, there are three main points that are important to the plot. The first main point is when Beowulf kills Grendel. The second main point in the story is when Beowulf kills Grendel’s mother. The last main point in the story is the death of Beowulf. The first major point in Beowulf is when Beowulf kills Grendel. After hearing about the many Danes that Grendel had killed, Beowulf and a group of warriors decide to sail and help the Danish people: “In his far – off home Beowulf … Heard how Grendel filled nights with horror And quickly commanded a boat fitted out, Proclaiming that he’s go to that famous king” (Raffel 194 – 199). This shows that Beowulf is willing and eager to help other countries in …show more content…
Later that night, once everyone is asleep, Grendel enters Herot Hall to kill some of the men, but is instead mortally wounded by Beowulf. Because of Beowulf’s success and bravery, King Hrothgar, ruler of the land, gives him gifts and a feast in his honor. The second main point in the story Beowulf is the death of Grendel’s mother. When Grendel’s mother hears about the death of her son, she becomes angry and vows to avenge her son: “His mother’s sad heart, And her greed, drove her from her den on the dangerous Pathway of revenge.” (Raffel 1276 – 1278). This quote shows that Grendel’s mother most likely cared enough about Grendel that she wants to get revenge on those who killed her son. However, later Beowulf goes on a journey to the lake in which Grendel’s mother lives and slays her with her own sword. The last main point is when Beowulf dies. Finally, Beowulf leaves the Danes and goes back to Geatland and later becomes king after his father passes away. Year pass, and eventually a thief awakens a dragon, who begins to torment the village. Beowulf hears of this and decides to help his people, even though he is getting older. Once there, he enters the dragon’s cave with his men, only to be abandoned
All seemed well until, Grendel's mother attacks the hall and takes back her son’s arm. Beowulf walks back into the hall after all of this is over and hears Hrothgar lament the death of his counsellor. Hrothgar realizes that Grendel's mother was just trying to avenge her son. This attack brings out the stories of the country people and their monster stories. Off in the distance, Beowulf hears a mere and he bolsters courage from Hrothgar.

Nina Ortiz Prof. Kappes ENG 301 26 February 2018 Two Tales of a Mother A woman, a savage, a mother, or a beast may or may not be your opinion of Grendel's mother in the Anglo-Saxon epic poem Beowulf. Beowulf leaves much to the reader to imagine who she is as person and so interpretation varies. However, throughout the text, the poet seems to praise Beowulf for his heroic ventures while Grendel’s mother gets no real recognition other than distasteful descriptions.
Her actions do seem cruel and evil, but she is also a grieving mother that wants to avenge her son. After Grendel’s death, “Grendel’s fierce mother” begins to exhibit human-like characteristics such as her caring and protective nature for her child. This can be shown when she carried “off the claw that Beowulf tore from her child” to demonstrates her anger and grief for her son’s death. While she is characterised to be a “she-wolf,” she is also a “mighty mother” that just wants to protect her child. Her whole purpose of killing Hrothgar’s friend and wreaking in Heorot is was to avenge Grendel’s death.
The “Monstrous ogress” was “savage in her grief,” and her actions become even more beastly than her sons (Beowulf 1258-76). Women in this Germanic Warrior society were meek, so the actions of Grendel’s mother greatly contrast with the typical behavior of a woman in this time period. Grendel’s mother’s gruesome actions are beastly in nature, but her emotions of outrage and grief for the murder of her son are human. Once again, Beowulf’s victory of the savage monster shows the overall theme of good winning against evil.
When Grendel dies from the power of Beowulf, this does not leave Grendel’s Mother amused. Grendel’s Mother is attacking Herot and “she’d killed a glorious soldier, cut a noble life short. No Geat could have stopped her”(Beowulf 416-417). As seen in the quote, Grendel’s mother is very upset about what happened to her son. By killing a soldier and terrorizing Herot, she is getting revenge for the death of her son.
First, Beowulf kills Grendel. Then Grendel’s mother comes to the hall to seek revenge. Afterward Beowulf kills Grendel’s mother. Finally Beowulf goes back to Geatland where he gets killed by a dragon. “ ..
