1) The main point of the essay is revealed in paragraph two where it states, “The cause of my anguish is that I am the lone bastion of testosterone in a household that contains two females undergoing estrogen-related Armageddon’s of biblical proportion.” Hughes’ main point is the troubles a man faces in a family with two females. He sets up an illustration comparing his household to a “war zone where every word [he utters] is a potential grenade threatening to blow up in [his] face.” This comparison exaggerates the position the author is in through the metaphor he uses of the war zone to capture his family dynamic. 2) Hughes secondary point in the essay is the “existential question: ‘What the heck went wrong here and what do I do about it?’”
Arna Bontemps works is often times linked with the Harlem Renaissance, however, there is another poet that when thinking of this time, that always comes to mind. Langston Mercer Hughes was born on February 1, 1902, in Joplin, Missouri. Southern living during this time, was surrounded with a thick cloud of racial tension, luckily for Hughes, he did not live in Missouri long. Like Arna, Hughes was not fully black as both of his partners were biracial. However, unlike Bontemps, his partners separated when he was young, leaving Langston with feelings of rejection and abandonment.
Slavery had many affects on the slaves including that of knowledge and heritage. Slavery had hurt many people and had affected the slaves deeply. It was sparked by a migration of nearly one million African-Americans who moved to the prospering north to escape the heavy racism in the south and to partake in a better future with better tolerance. Magazines and newspapers owned by African-Americans flourished, poets and music artists rose to their feet. An inspiration swept the people up and gave them confidence.

Langston Hughes Langston Hughes experienced everything an African American in the early 1900s could and then some. I would call his life unique. Hughes experienced the realities of not having a dollar in his pocket, and the advantages of the high life with money not being an issue. He saw both sides of American life but what made him famous was a product of the lower points in his life and the experiences given to him by a racist society. Hughes was raised in Kansas, a state that was not very friendly to black people, but then again what state truly was.
This question, in my opinion, is one that is worthy of being on the final exam. I feel authors of African-American decent are often looked over. Many courses outside of African American Studies classes, do not take the time to explore literary works these authors have to offer. For example, Langston Hughes writes a poetry piece called Afro American Fragment, which gives you a great breakdown of what an everyday African American person goes through considering that their whole history is basically taken away from them. Langston seems to show his audience that in books we never hear much about what contributions a African American person has done except for being brought to America and being a slave.
