Suspense is a mental uncertainty or anxiety. It can also be defined as the state of being undecided or doubtful. Authors of mysteries include elements such as foreshadowing, red herrings, and closed settings to help create suspense. The short stories “This Way Nobody Gets the Blame,” “The Adventure of the Speckled Band,” and “Invitation to a Murder,” include these elements and are examples of well-balanced and well-defined mystery stories. The authors of these stories write interesting and suspenseful stories/mysteries.
I found the book Day of Tears by Julius Lester a very good read and I would certainly recommend the novel to others. This is a historical fiction book about the lives of slaves, and specifically, a major slave auction known as “The Weeping Time.” Lester wrote this book in dialogue of both the slaves and whites in the south. One of my favorite parts of this book was how the author included interlude sections to let readers know about certain characters later in their life.
Suspense and feeling are used in every story and are created by cause and effect relationships. In the Tell-Tale Heart and Monkey’s Paw they both wish for something. But in both stories the wishes cause a effect. Edgar Allen Poe and W. W. Jacobs uses the Cause and Effect relationship in their stories to create the suspense.
Edger Allan Poe, who wrote “The Masque Of Red Death" did not predict the Ebola Virus, because the placing, timing, symptoms, and cures does not depict the Ebola Virus today in history. The Ebola Virus originated from West Africa, but the red death had no origin. The year Poe wrote the "The Masque Of The Red Death” was in May 1842, the Ebola Virus was first discovered in 1976, but the serious Ebola outbreak was in March 2014. So why didn't the epidemic happen in 1976? The two diseases symptoms are different to.
Poe uses symbolism a lot in his stories to make his writing have a more eerie feeling. ”The Tell-Tale Heart” and “Masque of Red Death” both have symbols that induce fear into the main characters hearts. In The Tell-Tale Heart Poe writes “...for it was no the old man who vexed me but his evil eye “(75).The narrator kills an innocent old man for that hr thought the old man's eyes were judging. Although the old man just had cataracts ,the narrator could not stand the man for his eye he compared looked as vulture's eye. The narrator was afraid of this old man and his “evil eye”.
The Masque of the Red Death has a lot of symbolism that has to do with the circle of life- such as the different colors of the seven rooms each meaning one stage of life. For instance, page 173 states, “And this I did for seven long nights- every night just at midnight- but I found the eye always closed; and so it was impossible to do the work; for it was not the old man who vexed me; but his Evil Eye”. Page 173 has many examples of suspense but, the main one was that he wouldn’t kill the man for seven days. He was safe because, his eye was closed but, this then makes the reader fear for the man because, what if one of his eyes opened.
For two centuries now, horror and suspense stories have become one of the most intriguing types of story genres. These genres have captured the attention of countless of readers and nowadays watchers. According to Percy D’Aco, horror stories are created to show discomfort and fear reflecting on one’s greatest fears. In the process of writing horror stories, numerous authors create suspense to make people continue reading and stay hooked on the story. A great example of the use of suspense would be the horror story “August Heat,” written by W.F Harvey.
Movies, books, and imagination that gives us the emotions we have and makes us what we are. When afraid our heart races like a horse, our pulse runs like the wind, and our skin gets cold as winter. Demonic, death, and evil a good horror story can reflect the deepest of fears on a person. The never ending mystery can bring a person to the brink of solving the mystery and they will keep on watching/reading until the tingly sensation goes away like it never happened. The suspense is one of the emotions that leaves us hanging on a subject and want to finish the sensation by reading/watching the mystery.
What gives the reader that feeling of being on the edge of their seat? Why would he want the reader to anticipate what’s going to happen next? That is how the author expresses tension. The author does this by using literary devices. Edgar Allen Poe builds suspense in “The Black Cat” by using specific literary devices—foreshadowing, allusion, and slow pace.
In “The Pit and the Pendulum”, the author manages to incorporate suspense into several parts of this story. One example is where it states, “I was sick—sick unto death with that long agony; and when they at length unbound me, and I was permitted to sit, I felt that my senses were leaving me. The sentence—the dread sentence of death—was the last of distinct accentuation which reached my ears. After that, the sound of the inquisitorial voices seemed merged in one dreamy indeterminate hum.” This shows how the author created suspense by not telling the reader about why the narrator was receiving a death sentence.
This story of death works out, because Edgar Allen Poe gives good use to author’s craft. Edgar Allen Poe uses imagery, symbolism, and setting to create an effective story. In the “Masque of the Red Death” Poe uses description to give imagery.
Universally, suspense is used for various forms of entertainment to engage the audience by creating uncertainty. In “And Then There Were None” by Agatha Christie, suspense is used for very similar reasons. On a remote yet expensive island, ten guests are invited for reasons varying from chatting with old friends to getting a job as a servant. However, all the guests have something in common. They all have guilty consciences of murder!
