Mental hygiene ideas became highly incorporated into psychiatric tactics, because of these rising ideas the mental hygiene movement was established in 1909. Mental hygienist stressed early prevention and diagnosis, because of this they started to focus on the mental health of children. They believed that early childhood experiences influence a person's mental health later in life. Mental hygienists saw that the education system was a suitable place to assert these prevention activities, so they reached out and started programs for teacher education and education reforms in general.

Dorothea believed in the greater good of the people which is expressed in this article by her views both benefiting the public and the mentally ill by keeping them out of public and in facilities where they can be cared for. Dorothea Dix wrote this document in order to have North Carolina to adopt a state mental hospital, although her views expressed in this document relate to her goals of establishing state mental hospitals everywhere. By including excerpts of the harsh conditions of the gruesome prisons and the stressful lives of average people contributes to the effectiveness of this document and helps better express the purpose for needing mental hospitals
Founded in 1883 by James C. Hawthorne, the Oregon State Hospital previously referred to as The Oregon State Insane Asylum has contributed to the success of present day society’s perception of mental health. Legislature passed an act in 1880, which allowed the Oregon state government to run a psychiatric facility (Mental Health Ass). The late 1800’s placed individuals determined to be a burden to society within the hospital to receive treatment. Mental health is currently accepted within American society and viewed as a disease rather than a mental disturbance and danger to civilization.

The learning objective I chose to further explore was “Explain the role of the industrial hygienist in anticipating, recognizing, evaluating, and controlling workplace environments that may affect the health of the worker.” The Occupational Health and Safety Administration (OSHA) website has a breadth articles on the specific functions of an Industrial Hygienist. The “Informational Booklet on Industrial Hygiene” has been made public for reproduction and serves as a good overview to explain the role of the industrial hygienist. (Herman & Jeffress, 1998)
Before the Mental Health Systems Act of 1980, people with mental health illnesses were confined to public psychiatric hospitals where they were neglected and poorly medicated. Patients’ needs were unmet due to the lack of knowledge and prevention services which led to a number of deaths of the mentally ill. Due to the lack of services, hospitals were not equipped with early detection or prevention programs that would have reduced the number of hospitalized patients. Before the federal government partnered with the state 's, funding was limiting which led to the government overlooking the individual needs of each community or state. Another problem that needed revision was aftercare.

As I future hygienist, I plan to educate my patients about tobacco products. Although some of my patients will lie to me about their smoking habits, I will be able to identify suspicious spots by performing the intra and extra oral examination. I believe this is important because we are the first to identify and notice anything suspicious that could affect the body. If I approach a patient who smokes, I will first ask him or her about his or her smoking habits. For example, I will ask the patient how long has he or she been smoking for and the amount he or she smokes a day.
The ideas that the world has about mental health nowadays does not help. By trying to prevent mental health and getting help from people who really need it is something we need to do. There needs to be an institution to help people who need it and to provide and sanctuary for the people who can not get
When it comes to children they may have an obsession or a compulsion that they are frequently doing or thinking about. One compulsion that a child may have is repetitive hand washing. The student may think that they are not clean and they will need to rewash their hands. The student will rewash their hands even though they just washed them. They may need to do this multiple times until they think that their hands are finely clean.
I agree Tesheika, Industrial Hygienists have an important role in ensuring that the safety and welfare of workers is a top priority among many businesses and industries. Their job is to enhance worker environments and make them safer, and in doing so make these businesses more efficiently run. Good recordkeeping allows industrial hygienist to form a well-organized understanding of what is known about work environments, what could be improved about an employee’s work conditions and/ or working atmosphere, as well as learn about many issues that may be unknown threats to an employee’s wellbeing. By taking through and detailed notes industrial hygienists are better able to compile accurate exposure assessments and a better understanding of exposures,
Through the institutions, patients had less freedom, were forced to do activities, had no say in their treatments, and had to be helped with everyday tasks. The lifestyle in mental hospitals corresponded with American life in the 1950’s and early 1960’s because the mental hospitals encouraged conformity. While the topic of mental health awareness has recently been introduced, the roots of mental illnesses run deep into history. Mental illnesses, also called mental disorders, are a wide range of conditions that affect mood, thinking, and behavior. Many people with mental illnesses are now fighting to increase awareness of disorders like depression and anxiety, and some argue that the best way to educate about mental illnesses is to teach about it in school. By educating about mental illnesses in schools, activists are hoping to increase understanding about the topic and prevent teenagers who have mental illnesses from feeling alone.
