Transformational leaders, who empower nurses to advocate, understand that communication and professional collaboration are the core ingredients to foster safe nursing care and to collectively advocate for improved health care policies. Of interest, due to communication and collaborative efforts among state hospital associations and the ANA along with the state nurses associations, seven states have enacted safe staffing legislation using the Registered Nurses Safe Staffing Act’s committee approach (ANA, n.d.). Conclusion The essence of an effective nurse leader lies in the ability to inspire and motivate others to action, which begins with communication and professional collaboration skills.
Each morning patients came in for assessment and the treatment team developed or altered existing treatment protocols. I longed to be part of this team, working to stabilize each patient so they could return home to pursue their goals. The nurses stood out to me as the team members at ground zero in the unit, working directly with patients, and advocating for them in meetings. As a Nurse Practitioner, I will provide this same standard of holistic care to my patients, taking into consideration their biological, social, psychological and cultural needs while developing and implementing treatment decisions.
It is defined as the integrated care, team approach, and communication between health care members in the effort to provide a functional work environment (Clarke, & Hassmiller, 2013). To summarize, professions across a health care organization should come together to improve the work environment to achieve the same goals to ensure that as a team, outcomes are being met. The Institute of Medicine (2010) believes this is an area that needs vast improvement, and due to fact that interprofessional leadership is not implemented as the standard throughout the hospitals nationwide. The Institute also believes that collaboration is a key strategy for improving problem solving (2010). “Quality care is best provided in a healthy, functional work environment” (Finkelman, et al, p477, 2013). With that being said, interprofessional leadership should be implemented more across the nation in an effort to provide a healthy, functional work environment.
Interprofessional teamwork is a trending topic that has become popular in the healthcare field over the last several years. Interprofessional teamwork refers to the cooperation, coordination, and collaboration expected among members of different professions in delivering patient-centered care collectively (Eggenberger, Sherman, & Keller, 2014, para. 1). Its popularity has rose due to the many benefits its yields to the healthcare profession. These benefits include improving communications among disciplines, improving patient outcomes, and decreasing medical errors. I will discuss what effect interprofessional teamwork has on healthcare, and why this topic is important to nursing.
Introduction Teamwork builds up the ability of nurses and other healthcare providers to implement higher quality and a more holistic care. In this essay, firstly, I am going to discuss about teamwork in nursing. Secondly, I am going to talk about the importance of teamwork within nurses and other healthcare providers. Interprofessional teamwork has become essential part of health care system in order to improve the quality of care. Many researches has suggested that collaboration of health care workers has impacted the patient care outcome in a positive way, as well as assisting to avoid errors by, “watching each other’s backs” (Cherry & Jacob, p 398). Furthermore, “Important indicators of safety, patient care, and environment of care, such as complications and error rate, length of hospital stay, conflict among caregivers, staff turnover, and mortality rate, have all been shown to decrease in collaborative care environment” (Green & Johnson, 2015, p. 2)
Leadership has many definitions. Chin, Desormeaux, and Sawyer (2016) define leadership as a relationship between followers and a leader with the intent to promote change through a mutual vision. Therefore, leaders are active influences in the outcome of organizations, through their decision-making, strategies, and influence on followers (Dinh et al., 2014). Additionally, in the nursing context, it has been documented that a leader 's style plays a factor in patient outcomes (Fischer, 2016). Indeed, in an ever-changing, complex health care environment, nursing leadership has become a crucial factor in managing challenges and maintaining patient safety (Fischer, 2016).
A healthcare system should include an interprofessional team that works well together. If everyone in the interprofessional team is not cooperative or passionate about building the group, this may impact a patient’s outcome. The goal of an interprofessional team within a healthcare system is to provide the finest quality of care for their patients. If one or multiple cannot put the effort to work with others, the intended result may be corrupt. It is vital for healthcare interprofessional teams to function as a whole to provide the greatest result.

My biggest concern with improving quality care and patient safety issues in that, the responsibility is not ours alone, our Chief Nurse Executives (CNEs) and Director of Nursing (DON), and senior nursing management staffs to lead the journey Disch J. (2008). I find it overwhelming that the majority of the research literature (studies, surveys and reports believe nursing plays the pivotal role in changing the face of health care and improving quality care and patient safety.

My experience working on PCU/telemetry unit and surgical/trauma unit did not only allow me to obtain knowledge on various different medical conditions and surgeries, it also assisted me with my organization skills and time management. As a leader working as a charge nurse and a preceptor, I am autonomous and able to multitask. Also from working with various different healthcare professionals, I am aware of different roles each healthcare team members play in the process of patient care. As a Family Nurse Practitioner student, I plan to advance my ability and my awareness to program my mind to think like an Advance Practice Nurse while not losing the valuable skills and knowledge that I have gained as a Registered Nurse. They are able to connect, communicate and coordinate across multiple departments, professional opinions and voices, and the daily schedules of patients. Advocating and designing care with the patient and family is a true skills set and cultural attribute that adds tremendously to a culture of safety and patient – centeredness but requires the most able leadership to build these bridges across the many professionals engaged in care. Building this culture is a leadership challenge and there is no one in my experience better able to make these changes than nursing leaders ( Maureen Bisognano, 2009). Nurses should not just be at the bedside or within the nursing community but must be involved as leaders and decision – makers throughout the healthcare system.
