I believe the in the Crucible John Proctor is the most dynamic character in the Crucible. John Proctor is a father of the Proctor family, he doesn't attend church every sunday but only a few times a year and he states that his house is a holy house. John said to John Hale he helped build the church of Salem and put golden candles to light the church. The reason why he doesn’t attend church very often is because once you give people something they need later they're coming back for more becoming greedy. And he tells John Hale he still remember the ten commandments but leaves out adultery because he has cheated on his wife with another lady.
Reputation is placed at the forefront of The Crucible, as John Proctor struggles with whether the moral decision is to lie and confess to witchcraft or tell the truth and hang. After Elizabeth and John have a quick discussion about their children, and the death of Giles Corey, John finally opens himself up to Elizabeth: “(With great force of will, but not quite looking at her) I have been thinking I would confess to them, Elizabeth. What say you? If I give them that”(Miller 124)? John is embarrassed by his past adultery, and now has to maintain both his reputation with Elizabeth and himself.
Not every hero lives to tell his story. This is exactly what happened in Arthur Miller’s play The Crucible, a story focused on the Salem Witch Trials. In Spring of 1692 in the town of Salem, Massachusetts a group of teenage girls were caught by Reverend Parris, a selfish and materialistic man, dancing around a campfire in the woods during the middle of the night. In order to avoid punishment, they began to blame innocent people of witchcraft. The court was established with judges Danforth and Hathorne in charge to question the people who were accused.
John Proctor is a complex character. In The Crucible by Authur Miller it shows how people in a community that believed in witchcraft and have personal grudges against each other can end badly. John Proctor is not a perfect protagonist but shows that he is willing to do what is right to stop all the bewitching in Salem. John Proctor's character flaw is that he cannot forgive himself. The only thing John Proctor had left was his name.
When reading The Crucible by Arthur Miller, some might think that John Proctor is a good and honest man right? Wrong. John Proctor is nothing but a fraud, a scoundrel; and even though he is respected and sometimes even feared in Salem, he has come to think of himself as a bit of a fraud. Although a sinner, Proctor keeps his secret of adultery from everyone in Salem. Abigail, John’s secret lover, and a group of girls were seen dancing in the forest.
What does it mean to be a good person? Being a good person is reflecting certain qualities such as honesty, faithfulness, and trust. In The Crucible, by Arthur Miller, John Proctor does not portray these qualities of a good man. Proctor was puritan living in Salem. As a puritan, he should have held showed these high morals, but that was certainly not the case.
Goodness and nobility is determined by an individual’s morality and their willingness to follow a virtuous path in their life. It is also determined by the ability of an individual to acknowledge their shortcomings and become more self-aware. In The Crucible by Arthur Miller, John Proctor is a good man as he showcases righteous morals and principles. This is shown, as he ends his affair with Abigail, protects his wife and his friends’ wives, and dies to preserve his integrity and honour. First, John Proctor shows his goodness, by refusing the physical advances of Abigail, who wishes to continue their love affair.
In the Crucible, many of the characters go through changes because of the intensity of the situation. But there is only one character that I think changed the most, and that is John Proctor who is the protagonist of the novel The Crucible by Arthur Miller. I think that John Procotor changes the most in the Crucible because he is in every act and mostly in every scene, and throughtout the play I see more drama (Dynamic Character) in him than any other character in the Crucible and I will go through and tell you how John Proctor changes in the Crucible. In the beginning of the play (Acts 1 and 2), we focus on John Proctor and we know that he is a good puritan citizen, a hard-working farmer and who is a husband and father.
John Proctor was a man of honor and had a well respected name in the town of Salem. Sadly he died tragically but as a hero. He was hanged because he was accused of doing the devil’s work. He was given the chance to save his life if he admitted on a piece of paper that he was working with the devil but he refused to tell that lie. He wanted his sons to be able to walk the streets without being shunned from the world because they deserved better.

Perhaps the character that connected to the audience most was John Proctor, the protagonist of the play. He reflects the mistakes that we have made in our lives, and the struggle that some of have while trying to take the blindfold off of other people. He should be considered a hero because he feels guilt, and therefore tries to make up for the fact that he once had an affair.
Is John Proctor a good man? From the very beginning of The Crucible, he has shown himself to be a charismatic and powerful man who is not afraid to state what is on his mind. These traits would make him out to be a righteous man to question the motives of those who accuse others of witchcraft. But his affair with the young Abigail Williams taints him because of the facts that he is hypocritical over the same sin he committed. However, in the end, John Proctor proves to be a good man with pure intentions...
In my opinion John Proctor is the protagonist of the crucible, because there are some reasons. One reason for me is that John Proctor is starting the Salem witch trials indirectly. It is Abigail who starts the trials, but she only does it to kill John’s wife to be the only one John love and they finally can get married. Because of that the relationship between John, his wife and Abigail is in the foreground. Another reason why John is very important in the Crucible is that he has a strong voice in the community.
John Proctor is a good man despite anything others may say about him. He displays three very noble qualities throughout the witch trials which are bravery, honesty, and an overall goal to save lives even to the point where he sacrificed his. While many argue John is a bad man because he committed adultery they are entirely mistaken. Just because he had one bad sin gives no right to anybody to call him a bad person when clearly the good side of him is shown more than the bad. John Proctor is a good man who displays the characteristics of a hero and could be seen as one for giving his life for his friends.
In The Crucible, a drama by Arthur Miller, John Proctor demonstrates courage by speaking out for what he believes in while knowing his consequences, admitting his wrong doings with Abigail to save Elizabeth’s life, and choosing to be hanged over having his name posted on the church door because the second his signed confession is posted, his and his loved ones reputations will be ruined. In the beginning of the play all John Proctor cared about was his reputation. However, ultimately he sacrificed his reputation by telling the court he committed adultery. John telling the court he was guilty ruined his reputation, which made all hell break loose.
The Admirable Traits of John Proctor Who is the most admirable OR despicable character in the plan, and why? What is the larger theme and message that Miller sends through the character? I believe that John Proctor is the most admirable character above everyone else, in The Crucible, by Arthur Miller. I believe this because John is honest, hardworking, and he loves his wife, who is in peril of being falsely charged with witchcraft. John Proctor is a farmer that lives outside of Salem, and his wife is Elizabeth (Miller, 20).
