The facts of this case are the son of the famous aviator Charles Lindbergh was kidnapped from his home on March 1, 1932. About two months later, the toddler body was discovered in Hopewell Township near Highfields in New Jersey. After an autopsy, the medical examiner determined that the cause of death was severe injuries to the head resulting from a fracture skull. After an in-depth investigation, Hauptmann Richard was detained and charged with murder. In 1935, Hauptmann was eventually found guilty of this heinous crime and sentenced to death. The defendant Hauptmann first appearance happened in Hunterdon County Courthouse in New Jersey. Hauptman would not be granted temporary release or bail due to the high stakes and intricate nature of the case. Also, the preliminary hearing is best described as a "trial before the trial" at which the judge decides, not whether the defendant is "guilty" or "not guilty," but whether there is enough evidence to force the defendant to stand trial. Throughout the preliminary hearing in the Lindberg Baby Case, the court was the evidence presented by the prosecution was enough to go to trial for the defendant. Arraignment is a formal reading of a criminal charging document in the presence of the defendant to inform the defendant of the charges against him or her. In response to arraignment, the accused is expected to enter a plea. In the Lindberg Baby Case, throughout the arraignment the defendant was charged with kidnapping and murder. Adjudication is the legal process by which an arbiter or judge reviews evidence and argumentation, including legal reasoning set forth by opposing parties or litigants to come to a decision which determines rights and obligations between the parties involved. In the last part of the adjudication process, the judge agrees on the ratio decidendi which is the ground or reason for a decision.
