In Summary: The above mentioned article not only encompasses a highly political hot button topic, it also engages in the matters of racism and social status. Who would have thought that a 9 year old boy could have provided the spark for a sociological bond fire? Logan Autry, an avid Trump supporter and Constitutional intellectual gave rise to an ambiguous social debate, when he fought for his 1st Amendment right to don the Trump hat at his elementary school. Following a series of “bullying” events, the youngster was asked repeatedly by school officials to remove his cap. Despite all the adversity he received, Logan refused to remove his hat. Consequently, his actions provoked school board measures and a remarkable amount of media coverage. …show more content…
As a student, I could plainly see that this column provided a variety of sociological subject matter at varying levels. Beginning at the micro level, Logan’s insistence to support Trump could logically be attributed to the values he obtained from his parents. The reactions of his classmates and his response to his peers, undoubtedly addresses the matter of social climate, being a result of cause and effect. Secondly, at the meso level, the school and school boards responses to the situation could arguably be considered to be more of a “politically correct” agenda, rather than an overall safety concern. Lastly, at a macro level, media coverage of this event provided worldwide coverage. Accordingly, current social surveys and studies were referenced, private citizens were interviewed to determine contrasting points of view and previous political and social issues were also addressed; culminating in an ambiguous sociological …show more content…
This training covered almost every aspect of how to deal with the media and analyze the information which it presents. The research and reporting techniques employed between military and sociological philosophies are not too far apart. What I am learning is that the major difference between the two philosophies are found in the end state. That is to say, the specific goals of sociological studies have the potential to contrast one another, as the military often utilizes this type of intelligence in order to subdue a target, be it an individual, a group or an entire culture. Consequently, it is my opinion that scholars in the field of sociology have a common goal to improve society as a whole. Ultimately studying the fields of philosophy and sociology have proven to enhance my perceptions, enabled me to embrace an open minded perspective and greatly assisted me with explaining complex and dynamic social
In the past students did not know the guidelines of what they could say at school, but the students at Des Moines brought attention to the rights of every student at school(Blacher 10). Things changed in the 1960's many students wore black armbands to school as a way of protesting the Vietnam War (Blacher 11).The Des Moines school banned them from wearing their armbands(“Case summary:Tinker”1). Mary Beth and John Tinker believed it was their constitutional right to be able to express how they feel(“Case summary:Tinker”1). They decided to take their case to the courts. case went all the way to the supreme court(“Case summary:Tinker”1).
In his article, “Black Men and Public Space,” Brent Staples writes about his encounters with people during his nighttime walks in and around the city streets of Chicago and New York. He argues that, as a result of crimes committed by criminals of African American descent, people tend to quickly avoid him because they assume that he will likely mug them because of the color of his skin. Nevertheless, on the subject as to whether this article is an appropriate and good example of the reaction of others, it is quite obvious that this is a good example of the reaction of others, given how Brent Staples spent much of his time working in the city as a journalist, and that crime rates are high in inner city areas. However, despite the fact that this
Good Afternoon your honor, I am filing a motion for the admissibility of Cameron Awbrey’s statement because there is clear signs of attenuation between the statement given and the arrest. I will prove my case by providing examples of precedent cases similar to the laws involved in Cameron's case. In the precedent case Utah v. Strieff, the accused was survallinced over a short period of time, was subjected to an unlawful stop and arrest but later received a lawful arrest. The question was whether or not the fruit of the poisonous tree doctrine applied, which excludes evidence that is gained from an unlawful search or seizure.
Samantha Kubota’s “School Punished Teen Girl for Working Out in Sports Bra in 100-degree Texas Heat, ACLU Say” (2023) tells the story of a young female athlete. A teenage girl who participates in cross country and track at her high school got in trouble for wearing a sports bra during practice in 100-degree heat while her male counterparts were practicing shirtless. Furthermore, since G.H. wore a sports bra, she was denied the award of being the top runner on the girls’ cross-country team; this award would have been crucial for college recruiting and applications. The girl, who identifies by her initials G.H., requested help from the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU). The ACLU sent a letter to her high school stating the coaches, District officials, and employees violated the Fourteenth Amendment and Title IX of the Education Amendments by reinforcing a sex-stereotyped dress code and treating the girls’ and boys’ cross-country teams differently.
Anne Moody’s involvement in the Civil Rights Movement is fueled by anger at the system she was raised to adhere to. The implications of black social rules reveal themselves in Emmitt Till’s murder, and the case spurs her interest in the NAACP, an organization banned in rural Mississippi. For Moody, Coming of Age in Mississippi means to see the world through the lens of a poor black woman from the rural South. She becomes an activist and aligns with the intentions of the greater movement, but can’t shake the feeling that part of the problem is being ignored. Generational differences, Ideas about race vary greatly by generation, and this contrast catalyzed the Civil Rights movement.
Furthermore, a large force which in this case was a political event, has caused hate crimes to rise. What was also mentioned in the textbook was that "Understanding individual human behavior often requires investigation of the larger societal beliefs and values that support that behavior." (Ballantine, Roberts and Korgen: pg.19) North had listed at the end of her article some of the hate crimes that have caused awareness of what is happening. An example would be that on Wednesday (January 18th), there was "..
Jimmy Smith grabs for the Coke zero sugar and the Doritos reduced fat chips thinking that they are a good option. After that Jimmy sits down on his Superhero Bob blanket and watches The Galaxy Rangers. You may think that Jimmy Smith is a couch potato but really he is just another victim of advertising across the nation. Companies are becoming savage monsters tearing through our children's future just to get money by putting up advertisements; advertisements are at school, on buses, in the stores, and on television. There are huge problems related to juveniles viewing advertisements almost the whole day such as, youth are getting more and more health problems because of advertisers, kids and families are spending so much money for fundraisers to get cheap toys and they do not have money for college, plus young children are losing imagination and interest in games and outdoor
In Ben Robert-Smith’s opinion piece published in the Herald Sun on the 16th of January, 2017 “We Are One but We Are Many”, Robert- Smith addresses he Addresses the Australian public with the argument that is changing the date of Australia day from January 26th. He argues that the date should remain the same but should be undertaken in a manner that is “inclusive and respectful” of other Australian’s interpretation of the day. Comparatively, in Kevin V. Russell’s Letter to the Editor he presents the argument from an alternate perspective.
Controversy over the choice of books used to teach within schools has many parents questioning whether a book is appropriate for a school setting. Truman Capote’s novel, In Cold Blood, is a perfect example of a novel that tests the limits with the content placed in the book. Within Capote’s novel, he discusses many topics that parents find inappropriate for teachers to teach to their children. The Windsor Forest High School, in Savannah, Georgia, banned this book, “when a parent complained about sex, violence, and profanity …”
The book is an influential tool for promoting empathy and understanding and encourages readers to engage with important political issues. It is a valuable resource for educating young people and helping them to develop critical thinking skills, for example, The Hate You Give encourages readers to question the status quo and to think critically about issues of race, police violence, and social justice. By presenting a complex and nuanced portrayal of these issues, the book challenges readers to think deeply about their own beliefs and assumptions. Second, the book provides readers with a range of perspectives and voices, which can help them develop empathy and understanding for people who may have different experiences and perspectives than their own. Finally, the book is written in a way that is accessible and engaging, which can help young people develop a love of reading and a curiosity about the world around
This paper will discuss the problem of evil. In the first part, I will discuss Walter Sinnott-Armstrong’s atheist stance and William Lane Craig’s theist stance on the problem of evil. In the final part of this paper, I will argue that Walter Sinnott-Armstrong’s argument is stronger. The Problem of Evil
Through the subjects I have studied, I have gained a greater understanding of the notions of social justice and law, as well as how they inevitably shape
a. Sociology is the study of the social relationships that affect the humans as well as institutions. It involves many fields of study that include crime, religion, family, race, culture and society among others. It is the primary purpose of sociology to provide linkage to all of these different subjects to help in understanding how humans behave (Smith, 2016). b. Sociological enquiry is the careful analysis of the motivational factors as well as the behavior of a certain individual within a particular group of people. The primary objective of sociological inquiry is to reveal an understanding of the social world that is readily observable.
In today’s modern society, everyone is largely affected by society. From multiple social institutions like the government and economy for instance or even the effects of education and mass media; these all play a huge role in an individual’s relationship, behavior, and actions in their society. For an individual to understand things like a “culture” or why every society has a ‘social class hierarchy,’ they will be directed to “Sociology”. Sociology is the systematic study of the structures of human society and social interaction. Sociology attempts to understand how things like society, social events, interactions, and patterns influence the way humans think, act, and feel.
Sociology is the scientific study of human social relationships and interactions. Sociology 's subject matter is diverse. Subject matter for sociology ranges from the micro level of an individual and interaction to the macro level of systems and the social structure. At the society level, sociology examines and explains matters like crime and law, poverty and wealth, prejudice and discrimination, schools and education, business firms, urban community, and social movements. We can see these subject matters crystal clear as sociology ranges from crime to religion, from the family to the state, from the divisions of race and social class to the shared beliefs of a common culture and from social stability to radical change in whole societies.
