An epic poem is a long narrative poem with heroic deeds and events that are significant to culture. Beowulf is a story of a Scandinavian hero. Beowulf gains fame and glory when he first kills Grendel, then his mother, and lastly the dragon. Through his journey, he starts of as a young man and by the end, he is the king. Although he did kill the dragon he did not do it alone, after being horribly hurt he wanted to have a tomb as a lighthouse where he wanted people to remember him. Beowulf is an epic story because of his loyalty, bravery, and his common belief about the afterlife. Loyalty can be received and given. There are multiple examples of loyalty in Beowulf starting off with when Beowulf was loved by the Geats and they urged the adventurers. He chose the fourteen bravest men and set sail. Glory leads to loyalty, glory is what makes people love you and not forget. Beowulf loved glory “So fame comes to men who mean to win it and care about nothing else” (line 508). Beowulf hurried to the adventures when help was needed. Not only was Beowulf was brave he found fourteen of brave and best Geats and continued to Herot. The battle between Grendel and Beowulf showed bravery with Grendel’s sharp claws and teeth and only Beowulf’s physical strength. While Grendel is snatching at Beowulf he is able to bring his claws back and battle him until his screams and shrieks showed defeat. At the beginning of the battle with Grendel’s mother, he jumped into the lake without an answer. Their fight brought other monsters that beat and stab Beowulf.
