The word meditation is derived from the Latin word, meditari, which means, to think, to dwell upon, and to exercise the mind. Buddhists call it taming the monkey mind which goes in a million directions during our waking moments. Meditation is actually harnessing the power of the mind. It is the process of polishing the image of God within you. Let me explain the benefits of meditation by using the letters of the word MEDITATION. Meditation improves your Mindfulness which leads to Enlightenment and Detachment helping you to live your life with Intention, experiencing Transcendence, Awareness, Tranquility and Integrity with an Openness to everything that life offers in the Now. Mindfulness is a state of active, open attention to the present. …show more content…
But the word simply means, burn the light within or light the spark. All of us have a candle within, but it is often not lit. We are like a house with an electric connection but the switch is off. Enlightenment is as easy as flipping a switch or making a shift, but before it can happen, you have to first believe that there is a switch inside. If you continue to believe that enlightenment is the birthright of the spiritually elite, you will feel empty inside and exiled from life. According to Buddhist monk, Chogyam Trungpa, enlightenment is ego’s ultimate disappointment. Jesus said to his followers: You are the light of the world. He did not say: You have to become the light which presupposes effort or you will be light which means, at a later time in the future. But you are light right now, this moment, if only you decide to flip the inner …show more content…
There are three kinds of people: 1) those who make things happen; 2) those who watch things happen and 3) those who ask what happened? Awareness means, moving from the third group to the first and living our lives with eyes wide open, especially our inner eyes. Tranquility is a rare feeling in a fast-paced life. Meditation creates tranquility within us despite the storms and struggles that may hover around us. When you are in a state of tranquility, nothing happens to you but everything happens through you! Tranquility is the field where divinity within you and around you is experienced, because as Eckhart Tolle says, stillness is the language God speaks, and everything else is a bad translation.9 Integrity means, a sense of wholeness. Many of us feel fragile and fractured inside, rarely experiencing wholeness or a sense of well-being. We cannot attain integrity without the harmonious integration of the physical, emotional and spiritual aspects of our lives. Meditation makes us aware of the hole in our souls and moves us towards a yearning to fill them. Integration happens within us when we start living from the vantage point of the soul which is facilitated by
If the person stays on the right path, and shows their devotion, they will eventually reach enlightenment. In Homer’s The Odyssey, the main character Odysseus has to travel a very challenging path to get back to his family which is his version of enlightenment. Although it is not directly spoken about throughout The Odyssey, the Buddhist belief in temptation, suffering and enlightment is shown throughout
What have you learnt about the concept of integrity from your study of ‘To Kill a Mockingbird’ and one related text of your own choosing? Integrity means to be whole and undivided and to be honest and uphold your moral principles in what you do and say. The book ‘To Kill a Mockingbird’ and the events of Tiananmen square show us this. In particular, ‘To Kill a Mockingbird’ helps us see the positive effects of a person’s integrity on society as well as the negative impacts of a person’s lack of integrity on the people around them.
THE ENLIGHTENMENT “All mankind being all equal and independent no one ought to harm another in his life” john Locke. The Search for Enlightenment When someone mentions Buddha, listeners usually picture a chubby man meditating under a fig tree. Siddhartha Gautama, which is Buddha’s real name, was the founder of Buddhism. Siddhartha’s father kept his son inside their palace for 29 years to hide the truth of sufferings in the world. Once Siddhartha escaped and witnessed the pain in this world, he started on a search for enlightenment.
Banneker’s use of the word “tranquility” refers to widespread peace. In order to have peace, America had to separate from Britain and become self governing to avoid anymore conflict or oppression. This idea of freedom will extend further when
Thurman wrote, “‘Realizing your selflessness’ does not mean that you become a nobody, it means that you became the type of somebody who is a viable, useful somebody, not a frigid fixated, I’m-the-center-of-the-universe, isolated-from-others somebody. You become the type of somebody who is over the idea of a conceptually fixated and self-created ‘self,’ a pseudo-self. You become the type of somebody who is content never to be quite that sure of who you are always free to be someone new, somebody more” (Thurman 443). In order for one to become aware of oneself, one must first realize that he or she is just one other person that the universe will not stop over. Once this is realized, a person may finally feel “complete”, which is the concept behind being.
Using this technique, he posits one will eventually find the truth and be on the right path. This summarization can be likened to Conze’s assertion that Buddhist thinkers loved paradox and contradictions. With this, he associates Buddhist thought with
To quote Enlightenment philosopher John Locke, “Reason is natural revelation.” The reasoning and new ideas from Enlightenment philosophers was what shaped today’s society. The central idea of the Enlightenment philosophers of 17th and 18th century Europe was driven by Adam Smith’s thoughts on economy regarding economic decision making and the positive effects of the lack of government interference, the new political opinions and proposals regarding freedom and how it is obtained, expressed by John Locke, and the social and religious ideas regarding religious acceptance and having multiple religious influences in one place from Voltaire. The philosophers of the Enlightenment also were driven by the political theories expanding through Europe in the 17th and 18th centuries. John Locke, an Enlightenment philosopher during the late 1600s proposed new theories about politics and government in his literature titled “Second Treatise on Civil Government”.

So from the above talk we can infer that enlightenment can happen in two ways, one is through pain and the other is through insight. It is not necessary that a person will be able to stay in that state forever; these are just experiences that can lead to enlightenment or give a brief demo of what it means to be awakened. What Can You Do to Get
and we have created it to blame the things of our interest over it. The soul is mistaken for all our wills and activities and we think our self controlled by this soul and seem helpless (Coomaraswamy, 2011). This is the thing that separates us from inner peace and we can get the inner
We then start to see the world “as it is”, and not as we expect it to be, or want it to be, or what we fear it might be! It consists of starting to focus our attention on our breath, as it flows in and out of the body. We are then able to observe our thoughts as they arise in our mind, and realise that these thoughts come and go on their own, like the wandering clouds in
There are not permitted a place in calculative ‘herd’, which is how most people seem to find their meaning, therefore they must find their meaning elsewhere and are forced to mediate lest they lose their minds... The only way meditative thought could be entirely eradicated is if mankind as a species ceases entirely to cast some individuals out of the social collective.”
This further relates to that break in ordinary thought we mentioned earlier. Once, we bust through the barriers of ordinary thinking, we will be able to live without suffering. This clarity is your own buddha nature illuminating throughout your body. Although, both traditions of Buddhism emphasize this teaching, Chan Buddhist argue that seeing this own nature can happen suddenly. Juxtaposed to Indian Buddhism, enlightenment is supposed to be a long process that
Mediation is their practice of focusing and letting go of worldly problems. However Hinduism incorporates the practice of Yoga into their mediation to focus on realms of the universe. Buddhism uses mediation to focus and reach enlightenment or Nirvana. Mediation is similar to Christianity's idea of prayer, to take time away from the world and focus on our religions
