In the novel, Monster, by Walter Dean Myers, 16- year- old Steve Harmon is placed on trial for felony murder. Steve tries to prove his innocence to the jury and he is found not guilty. Therefore, he is acquitted of any crime. However, Steve’s contradicting thoughts make the reader question his innocence. When steve was discussing the testimony with his father in jail, he said, “I am just going to tell them the truth, that I didn’t do anything wrong.” An innocent person wouldn’t have to question whether to tell the truth or not. An innocent person shouldn’t have to lie in order to get out of jail. They should be able to tell the truth without any hesitation. In Steve's journal he wrote, “What did I do?
