If a person is abusing his power, then that means he has too much power. The book, The Chocolate War by Robert Cormier, is about a Freshman boy named Jerry who is shaking up his entire school by defying the Vigils, a group of boys who run the school. Brother Leon abuses his power when he hits a student on the cheek, pushes a student up against the wall, gives a student an F on purpose, and spends money that isn't his to spend.
I have chosen the quote “Many people feel they are powerless to do anything effective with their lives. It takes courage to break out of the settled mold, but most find conformity more comfortable. This is why the opposite of courage in our society is not cowardice, it’s conformity.” by Rollo May
Power can change people miraculously. It can mold one into a totally different person and change their way of living. When one is given the opportunity to be granted with inexplicable amounts of power, they may go through extreme measures to withstand this ranking. Written by Shakespeare, the play Macbeth imitates this idea purely. Lady Macbeth suffers a tragic flaw which is lust for power. Her being overly ambitious and having greed for power triggers her to have a dramatic downfall. Lady Macbeth’s character goes through an abrupt shift from being ruthless and greedy in the first act to then being faced with numerous amounts of guilt and culpability who then seeks suicide to purge her from the guilt, it is clear that unreasonable forms
Abraham Lincoln quoted “Nearly all men can stand adversity, but if you want to test a man’s character, give him power.” ...I agree with this quote, because when some of us or most of us get the taste of power over someone or something, we act different we show a part of us that we never show, we show the real us, the us that have waited for a long time to know how it feels to be powerful. One evening I with my cousins and we were hunting and since I have a better experience on hunting, I got to decide who hunts and who doesn’t, I was actually suppose to teach those who didn’t. Well that evening I was bad at one of cousins so I didn’t let her hunt. Well that evening I realized that I can be nice and the meanest person ever, because I abuse the
Power can impact an individual in both positive and negative ways. With power comes responsibility. How an individual chooses to handle that power determines the consequences. If a person uses their power for robust purposes, then there will be a positive outcome. Using power for evil (or greedy) motives, results in an equally negative outcome. In Macbeth’s case, he got extremely selfish and avid when he was named Thane of Cawdor, and remembered the prophecy of becoming king. He went on to deceive his way to the top, and killed anyone who stood in his way. Once crowned king, he didn’t misapply his power, per say, but it definitely went to his head. This resulted in culpability, and negative consequences of many sorts (ie: his wife dying, everyone
Macbeth is a piece of literature written in the 1600s by the bard himself, William Shakespeare. Macbeth, named after it’s main character, follows him through his journey to power; how he obtains it and what he does with it. In the beginning of the play, Macbeth and his good friend, Banquo, encounter three witches who show them great prophecies of what is to come. To Macbeth, they indicate he will become Thane of Cawdor and eventually king. Banquo hears he will be lesser than Macbeth, but greater, that his line should be happier than him; “That thou shalt get kings though thou be none/ So all hail, Macbeth and Banquo! (I. iii. 69-70).” They leave after they encounter the witches to meet with the king. A few moments later Macbeth discovers that he has become the Thane of Cawdor. Thereby planting ideas in Macbeth’s head of what he can do to ensure his reign. When you receive too much power, it can lead to troubles down the road.
If something is too old, does that mean it is not relevant anymore? The dreadful play Macbeth, written by William Shakespeare in the sixteenth century, has created a lot of controversy towards the issue that it is not relatable to a modern audience anymore. However, the themes, and character traits found in Macbeth are very similar and relatable to a modern society. The play Macbeth, demonstrates humanity, which will never change, attesting to the fact that, the play is still relatable to a twenty-first-century audience.
I really liked Abraham Lincoln’s quote. He says in his quote, “Nearly all men can stand adversity, but if you want to test a man’s character, give him power.” This really stood out to me because I do agree with it a lot. If you give a man or any person power it shows how they really are. Some people might use it to their advantage and some people might use it to help other people who need it. It shows how humble someone can be or how selfish they are. This has happened to me before. I tend to try and motivate my team to do better and to play with all we have. Sometimes I take it too far and what I think is motivating them is actually just making them mad. Since I am the varsity goalkeeper I think that I have the power to do this,
The quote that I chose was “ Nearly all men can stand adversity, but if you want to test a man’s character, give him power.” ~Abraham Lincoln
Power has a great impact on everybody depending on how you use it. How does the power affect the group? There are positive and negative outcomes for each decisions made by them. Throughout history, there were many victors who have gained its power to accomplish what they have planned. For example, Germany suffered heavy loss after the First World War. Not only they could not make a large military, they had to pay heavy reparations to the allied countries. Then Hitler rose up to break the treaty of Versailles and brought limited power to the people. That was the positive effect to the German Aryan races. However, the negative effect comes later in the Second World War. What was the cause of Germany’s great loss? Some of the reasons were his powerful and inhumane mistakes. Whatever he has done remains in the history. What does that tell us about power? No matter who you are power will bring both negative and positive outcomes.
“ Nearly all men can stand adversity, but if you want to test a man’s character, give him power.”
What is it to be good or evil? Truthful versus deceitful? In Macbeth, by William Shakespeare, Macbeth is given a prophecy by three witches that he shall be King and Banquo, his noble friend, shall be the father of kings. Macbeth didn 't like the idea of sharing power and wanted it all to himself. He contemplates killing King Duncan but is forced to commit to it by his wife, Lady Macbeth. Macbeth 's confidence diminishes and when he begins to meet his true fate. A powerful theme shown in Macbeth is that anyone can be susceptible to being both good and evil; this is shown through the snowballing effects of Macbeth 's potential idea of evil, to his guilt of murdering Duncan and Banquo, and his and Lady Macbeth 's eventual downfall due to committing worse deeds for power.
In every walk of life as well as in every situation in life people look up to others for leadership or for inspiration or for role models. This is more true these days for instance, in a family context children look up to their parents as models or in work place colleagues seek leadership among peers, or in common places the general public go after celebrities and fashion models for leadership or role models. In other context people who exhibit qualities like confidence, risk taking, courage, goal setting, decision making etc. are considered role models and people take them as leaders. Regardless of the context, in every place and time leaders are sought after and we have to be either a leader or a follower of a leader for
Power can be used to achieve greatness and create a positive nature in the world, but it also has the ability to create havoc and chaos if in the wrong hands. In Shakespeare’s play Macbeth, the main character, Macbeth, gains power quickly in terrible ways, and abuses the power to create pandemonium in Scotland. He was informed about a prophecy which foretold his future with many complications ahead of him. As the play progresses, Macbeth may be characterized as a hero who submerges to evil to become the villain, due to his ambition, maliciousness, and wickedness.
To define leadership is a challenge that took me a lot longer than I had expected and has caused me to take a deep reflection. True leadership to me is not something that is a given or part of a formal position, rather it is something that is earned through time, experience and respect. It is the ability to influence a group or organization to attain a common goal and to accept the challenges set before them. I great quote that I found that sums up my ideals is “It’s not the position that makes the leader; it’s the leader that makes the position” by John C. Maxwell, Laws of Leadership.
