Lane Kruse Mr. Whitaker English 9 13 February 2023 The Odyssey compared with O Brother, Where Art Thou? The Odyssey written by Homer in the early 7th century B.C. is a fascinating story about Odysseus and his struggles to return home, after the long war in Troy.
Cormac McCarthy’s novel written during the 20th century, conveying dramatic experience in which McCarthy’s use of rhetorical and literary techniques providing themes, symbols, motifs and other figures of speech emphasizing the impact on the main character, and other parts throughout the text. Throughout this deep understood text, the author conveys negative tones and dictions to the text. The character is described to be very dull and adventurous. He is very ominous yet a mysterious character , however it is yet to be described to be somewhat positive in regards of the symbols used in relation to the text.
In particular, Llewelyn Moss and Sheriff Ed Tom Bell lives are disrupted by a drug deal, causing them to re-evaluate their values and choices and ultimately learn that fate cannot be changed but chosen, making the cycle of literature that Frye proposed. Reading Response Three Many details in the tales told by the three old men in pages 1190--1197 are relevant to Shahrayar 's situation. Shahrazad is using these details to change him from an angry, misogynistic murderer into a loving husband. Through storytelling, Shahrazad is able to change Shahrayar in three ways. After Shahrayar was betrayed by his wife he became cruel and violent because of the pain he was in.
In Chapter 9-14 Holden Caulfield leaves Penecy Prep and heads to New York City. Where he will stay for a couple days before winter vacation starts and he will head home. Delaying breaking the news to his family he got kicked out of school for as long as possible. These chapters are where Holden’s loneliness becomes abundantly clear. The reader is subjected to many long rants by Holden about the company he wants, though he attempts to settle several times.
Throughout The Road, the author, Cormac McCarthy, utilizes many literary devices to further the readers knowledge of the story line. While it is common for authors to use literary elements, McCarthy contrasts with his use of style and syntax in more ways than one. For example, McCarthy’s novel uses a mixture of long and short sentences, it doesn’t include chapters, and it’s not grammatically correct. All of those examples join together to connect the audience with the story as they read. The results leave the readers thinking of McCarthy’s purpose for his style and keeps them engaged throughout the novel.

The novel tells a story of an unnamed man and his son in who struggle to survive in this horrific environment. I feel that the language in the novel is verbose. McCarthy is blunt in his descriptions. He uses repeated struggles and similar scenes forcing the reader to share the tough experience of the characters. I agree with the author that The Road is the picture of a post-apocalyptic world.
Society as a whole is something you make of it. If one wants to denounce the society they live in because it is “phony” that is because they’ve made the world around them phony. The character of Holden Caulfield in Catcher in the Rye is a prime example of someone being stuck in the idea that society is unchanging. Society is just how a person perceives the world in front of them. The eye of the beholder is the one that creates the society of their choice.
Holden Caulfield lives his life as an outsider to his society, because of this any we (as a reader) find normal is a phony to him. Basically, every breathing thing in The Catcher in the Rye is a phony expect a select few, like Jane Gallagher. What is a phony to Holden and why is he obsessed with them? A phony is anyone who Holden feels is that living their authentic life, like D.B. (his older brother). Or simply anyone who fits into society norms, for example, Sally Hayes.
‘Twelve Angry Men’ written by Reginald Rose, is based on the story of a jury who have to come together to determine the fate of a young boy accused to have murdered his own father. Initially, eleven of the jurors vote not guilty with one of the juror being uncertain of the evidence put before them. As the men argue over the different pieces of evidence, the insanity begins to make sense and the decision becomes clearer as they vote several other times. Rose creates drama and tension in the jury room, clearly exploring through the many issues of prejudice, integrity and compassion, in gaining true justice towards the accused victim. These aspects have been revealed through three character who are Juror 10, Juror 8 and Juror 3.

In The Catcher in the Rye by J.D. Salinger, Mr. Antolini gives Holden Caulfield advice when he is at one of his lowest points. Already aware of Holden’s mental state and position on school, he quotes Wilhelm Stekel, a psychoanalyst, “The mark of the immature man is that he wants to die nobly for a cause, while the mark of the mature man is that he wants to live humbly for one.” (Salinger 188). Although Holden fails to grasp Mr. Antolini’s message, the quote applies directly to his life because of his relationship with death as a result of his younger brother, Allie’s, death. Mr. Antolini uses this quote specifically because he wants Holden take a step back and try to live for a noble cause instead of resorting to death.
