Have you ever been so sure about a certain ending of a story and then the narrator turns everything upside down in a blink of an eye? Then, you have certainly tasted the purest form of fiction’s beauty, which is the “plot twist”. Plot twists are those sudden unexpected turns in the stories that reveal significant details beyond them; some of the plot twists can be foreshadowed by several hints throughout the story, while others are totally unexpectable. Among numerous fiction stories, there are three particular stories that have their unique and remarkable plot twists; the stories are “The Blue Cross” by G.K. Chesterton, “The Fasting-Artist” by Franz Kafka, and “The Necklace” by Guy de Maupassant. These stories deliver various notable life lessons …show more content…

This conclusion can be simply made in several stories and more complex in others. As an illustration, in “The Blue Cross”, noticing that theme is not to underrate anyone is not a difficult task to do as it is directly stated at the end; conversely, in “The Fasting-Artist” it gets a bit harder to figure out that the “artist’s” hunger was actually hunger to fame and distinction as the reader must dive through the ironies in the story. Significantly, “The Necklace’s” hidden theme that wealth itself is a delusion as it wastes your time and power for nothing needed a closer reading with a deeper understanding of the context. Finally, there are some open-ended questions that narrators leave to the readers as an opportunity for them to think beyond the lines in order to express themselves by making their own judgments such as the concealed question “Martyr or suicide?” in both endings of “The Fasting-Artist” and “The
