Dolores Clara Fernandez Huerta was born on April 10, 1930 in Dawson, New Mexico. Huerta is an American labor leader, civil rights activists, and was the co-founder of the National Farmworkers Association. Huerta’s father, Juan Fernandez, was a miner and a farm worker and later became the State Assemblyman of New Mexico. At an early age her parents divorced. Huerta lived most of her years with her mother, Alicia Chavez, and two brothers in Stockton, California. Huerta’s mother worked two jobs to provide for her family. Huerta would take music lessons and dance lessons. She was also a Girl Scout and won second place in a national essay contest. At school, Huerta encountered racism because of her background. That’s where they formed Selena y Los Dinos, the band Selena, her brother, Abraham, and sister, Suzette were in. He has always loved music and wanted to be in that band forever. One day while Selena was playing with her siblings and some of the neighborhood kids she heard her dad playing the guitar. However, even with all her success, she lived a simple life and lived a working-class district of Molina in Corpus Christi. “Selena considered herself a public servant.” Her impact on others was immeasurable. She was involved and participated in organizations such as the Texas Prevention Partnership by Texas Commission on Alcohol and Drug Abuse, D.A.R.E, and Costal Bend Aids Foundation Houston Area Women’s Center. The impact she had on others, and her death was compared to the deaths of John Lennon, Elvis Presley, John F Kennedy, and Pedro Infante (Orozco 2010). Selena’s death was detrimental to the Mexican-American population, for they lost a truly beloved icon. To many she became “more alive than she ever was in life.” Selena’s death “[brought recognition to Mexican-American, and unity to Hispanics” (Anijar 2001). In particular, her impact on the community of Corpus Christi is evident. The community honors Selena with a two-day festival, Fiesta de la Flor, which started on April 2015, where proceeds go the Selena foundation. Throughout her life, Selena was loved by many people. One being her husband, Chris Pérez. She met her husband when he tried out for the electric guitar position for her band. Falling in love, she married Chris against her family 's wishes. Not only was she loved by her husband, but also by her best friend, Yolanda; or so she thought. Apparently Yolanda was stealing money from Selena’s fan club and was trying to hide it. Selena’s father, Abraham, informs Selena about this and they confront Yolanda together. Obviously Yolanda wouldn 't admit to it right away. In a panic, knowing that she was found, Yolanda met with Selena and ended up shooting her in the back.
