On October 24th, 1952 Dwight D. Eisenhower delivered an address in Detroit , Michigan as the republican nominee for the president of the united states. He delivered this speech in hope to gain votes of the Democratic Party and to become president. While Eisenhower uses pathos to gain the emotion of autumn of America, he uses anaphora to better convey how there is in need of a new administration. This can be evidenced by him gaining the trust of the American people. In the very first paragraph Eisenhower uses anaphora by saying “In this anxious autumn for America, one fact looms above in our peoples mind. One trade guy challenges all men dedicated to the work of peace. One word shouts denial to those who foolishly pretend that ours is not a
Here at the Saratoga Springs chapter of NHS, we place tremendous value in the efforts of individuals to not only make a difference that they wish to see but also inspire others to do the same. With this in mind, it is my pleasure to introduce our guest speaker, Mr. Dave Brown. A graduate of Le Moyne University, Mr. Brown has become one of the most respected and highly regarded members of our Saratoga Springs Community. Whether teaching about his favorite President, James K. Polk, or dauntlessly leading his girls volleyball team into a sectional match, I have never failed to see Mr. Brown give less than one hundred percent. In my experience in his United States History course, I saw Mr. Brown’s ability to connect with each of his students.
This passage occurs as more and more people begin to disappear from Holmes’s hotel in the midst of the World’s Fair including waitresses, stenographers, and even a male physician. Larson's purpose in this passage is to depict Holmes's insanity and psychopathic tendencies as he murders several guests at his hotel. Employing a vivid sense of diction, Larson details Holmes’s methods of murder; he uses words such as “gorging,” “proximity,” “death,” and “panic,” to characterize Holmes’s preferences, including the fact that he avoids bloody murder (like the notorious Jack the Ripper) and enjoys being near his victims while they are on the brink of death. When he murders, Holmes feels a sense of, “possession,” over his victim and believes it is “satisfying.” The vault in which Holmes murdered most of his victims “deadened,” most of the sound- but not all, and when his hotel was full of guests Holmes would, “settle,” for more silent means, explains
According to Professor Jeffrey Bosworth, in his editorial “Hunting for Hope in Modern America,” he discusses the “screwed” millennial generation and the potential they have to be successful, despite current existing United States problems. Bosworth explains this from three different perspectives: the current issues in America, the positive attributes of the millennial generation, and what the millennial generation should do to succeed. In Bosworth’s opening proposition he elucidates the “[millennial] generation is screwed”. He expounds the millennial generation is predicted to “do worse than the previous generation”.
Majority of people now a days live to tell their rags to riches story of how they’ve acquired if not all a great deal of what they own due to their individual hard work. Once a young adult is enrolled in college they consume a massive amount of responsibility and gain their own sense of independence if they didn’t already have a strong sense of the concept. “Students today aren’t lazy”, Dunn said. “But if you look at what tuition is now and what the minimum wage is now, it’s not possible given that they’re up against” (President John Dunn of Western Michigan University). This is the exact point that author Svati Kirsten Narula is making when she makes use of an effective level of rhetoric’s in order to convince readers that the task of putting

John F. Kennedy, the 35th president of the United States, was elected on November 8, 1960. On January 20, 1961, Kennedy delivered a reassuring speech to display how he will run the country. Sciascia uses the element of irony throughout the short story in order to enhance the theme of hope and deceit… Sciascia evokes the element of irony in the title of the story as well because the story is called the long crossing and the journey that these travelers thought they were going on was in fact not long at all, it was a voyage that led them to the other side of their homeland of Sicily. Irony is used when describing how some of the travelers paid for the expedition by borrowing from money lenders. Some who borrowed from the lenders had no intention of paying the money back because they figured they had suffered enough abuse their whole lives regarding money, and once they figured that once they arrived in America they will owe no one. “The cunning ones among them borrowed from the money-lenders with the secret intention of defrauding them, just this once,
"Just do it!", "Impossible is nothing!" "Live or love" are the corresponding slogans of multibillion dollar companies Nike, Adidas, and Louis Vuitton. Each slogan conveys the modernistic doctrine of breaking traditional norms and daring to take charge of one's own "unique" life. Millions of people purchase their products as a result of the direct advertisement accentuating the possibility of being individualistic within an exponentially expanding human population. Yet, author Thomas Frank remains undeceived by the advertisement, unraveling the truth behind the pseudo-individuality; in "The American Paradox" Frank utilizes a postmodernism perspective to view through the façade.

He recalls past tribulations and victories of America as a nation and swiftly grabs his audience’s attention. By noting that his generation of Americans were “the heirs of that first revolution,” as well as through similarly democratic diction such as “freedom,” “peace,” and “liberty,” JFK appeals to the patriotic commonplace that his vast audience shares. This word choice allows his, specifically American, audience to connect with him, regardless of party or prior vote. It also sets the stage for the goals of his administration of securing and keeping democracy around the globe. Furthermore, Kennedy swiftly captures the audience’s attention through frequent alliteration.
In this passage, Charlotte Perkins Gilman highlights the theme that women must use their intellect or go mad through the use of literary qualities and writing styles. Gilman also uses the use of capital letters to portray the decline in the narrators’ sanity. This shows the decline in the sanity of a person because the words in all-caps is shown as abrupt, loud remarks. Gilman uses this method multiple times in her short story and this method was used twice in this passage. When the narrator wrote, “LOOKING AT THE PAPER!”, the major decline in her mental health was shown.
