Tim Wise’s article contains a lot of emotion and it is though the clever tactic of appealing to Logos and Pathos that Wise makes the reader really consider what he is speaking about. There is even an ethos aspect to his argument. Since Wise is a white man shaming his own race, this removes bias which in turn gives him credibility. Now to examine the Logos aspect of his argument. By using the statistic “in past two years, thirty-two young men have either carried out a mass school shooting or attempted to do so, and of these thirty-two, thirty were white teens,” Wise is using the logos aspect of a claim to really make the reader consider the gravity of the situation and take into consideration his appeal to begin profiling these kids (69).
Ravisankar begins his essay by talking about how consumers are constantly emphasizing finding lower prices and that means using sweatshop labor. The problem he identifies is as consumers in Western countries try to find lower prices, we are not helping sweatshop laborers escape their low standard of living. Ravisankar assumes his readers are unaware consumers in Western countries. His purpose in this essay is to educate his readers about the problem of brands’ exploiting their workers. In order to accomplish this purpose, Ravisankar appeals mainly to consumers to pay a higher price to help “improve the lives of sweatshop workers.”
Anzaldua’s use of pathos and anaphora in her speech helps communicate the idea that women of color should have the same ability, as white woman, to write. Gloria Anzaldua is trying to influence women to no let oppression stop them from speaking their minds. Anzaldua believes there are people who are able to see into the future, but do not see; others are able to speak, but do not; others have ears, but do not listen. These kind of people shouldn't be listened because they make assumptions of themselves, and only put ideas on people’s minds. The thesis of this chapter states that in certain situations, it is crucial to listen to a medical professional, however, in others, it is very important to listen to yourself and also to do what you feel is right. The author of Complications," Atul Gawane, has written this specific chapter to persuade the reader of his thesis. If the choice you make is incorrect, then it could potentially be a matter of life and death. Atul Gawande gives multiple examples of patients that have made wrong and right decisions to prove his point. He uses the personal anecdotes of four different people, with four decisions to prove his point.
Pathos is used many times when James is trying to reach the reader 's emotional side. James Hamblin states “You can look back at your responses, remembering the good things and the feeling nostalgic or remembering the bad and feeling resilient” (Hamblin 3). He is telling the reader, when you look back at old messages, pictures, or notes they are going to have at one point either a memorable impact or an upsetting impact. By James saying this in his article he is using pathos by getting the reader to feel those emotions as if they were looking back at their memories right at that moment.
In Niccolo Machiavelli's book, The Prince (1513), he evaluates on how a prince can be a successful leader. Machiavelli’s purpose of this guidebook was to construct his argument to the rising ruler Giuliano de Medici for when he comes to power in Florence. He adopts a casual but authoritative tone in order to convince the prince that Machiavelli’s evaluation on how to be the best prince, is the right thing for the prince to do without coming off as he knows more than the prince or is trying to intimidate him.. Machiavelli’s reference to previous rulers and whether their tactics failed or succeeded helps to benefit his credibility along with his allusion to historic text. He appeals to our logic by simply stating a prince can only do what is within his power to control, and his use of an analogy furthers his argument.
Factories are willing to objectify the lives of their employees, much of them being youth, in order to economize. Cutting costs is the primary interest of corporations, of which “‘the only thing they have substantial control over is labor’”, thus, the need for factory labor utilization (White, Atlantic). No one is safe from exhaustive factory labor, as researched by the Atlantic, a news magazine, who found that a Patagonia, a popular American brand, had found inspections that discovered “multiple instances of human trafficking, forced labor, and exploitation in Patagonia’s supply chain” (White, Atlantic). Factory labor, even voluntary, still involves abuse and work until exhaustion.
The work was also dangerous with not much supervising by the government. Workers, on the other hand, had little or even no bargaining power to leave the unsafe conditions. Nowadays, When Americans only pay attention when extreme work strike, levels of abuse are the norm hidden in the factories around the globe. The United States is made up of some of the most diverse and interesting cultures in the world. Jamila Lyiscott proves this by showing her different dialects and how they are all equally important. Lyiscott believes that the way she speaks towards her parents, towards her friends, and towards her colleagues are all one in the same. Throughout the entirety of her speech, Lyiscott changes up her vocal patterns and dialects so that the audience can understand first hand what each of these dialects are. When she talks about her father, Lyiscott uses her native tongue, when she talks to her fellow neighbors and close friends she switches it up to a more urbanized dialect, and when she is in school she masks the other two dialects with a professional sounding language.
The ability to divide our attention during cognitively demanding tasks and the allure of technology creates a delicate balancing act that can at times have grave consequences. On September 22, 2006 in Utah, Reggie Shaw placed the fates of James Furfaro and Keith O’Dell, as well as his own upon this deadly scale. Young people in the 21st Century need to reevaluate their ethics; David McCullough is helping them understand that by explaining that they need to be honest with themselves and their reality. His scathing criticism of them and their culture, philosophies, and ideologies, is justified and insightful; teens in the United States allows special to become a meaningless term, prefers to win instead of achieving, and cares too much about superficial accomplishments instead of internal growth. McCullough makes a point throughout his speech to say that being special is not just given to you; teenagers are not special by default.
