There were multiple differences in the movie and the play, The Crucible. Some were small changes that not a lot of people would notice, but there were also some that completely alter some elements. What were some of these differences? Right when the movie starts, there is already a big difference.
The first one that I will address is that in the play the Van Daans are already in the Annex when the Franks arrive, but in the movie, the Franks are already in the Annex and had been there for a while when the Van Daans arrived. The next difference is that in the play Peter knocks over a lamp when the robbers are downstairs, but in the movie, Peter does not knock over the lamp while the robbers are down stairs. In the movie Anne has more of a romantic relationship with Peter, but in the book it is more of just a friendly relationship. In the book Anne and Peter do not have a good relationship. It is just Anne teasing Peter, but in the movie they are friends early on.
For instance, in the movie A Raisin in the Sun, they take out quite a few parts that lead to nowhere. While in the play there are many unneeded parts. The movie, A Raisin in the Sun, is better than the play because it includes more detail and background story. Many similarities between the play and movie are shown, although the differences are certainly there, in the movie the characters are more developed. Their differences in the movie let the reader appreciate the characters in the movie more than the characters in the book.
The animated tale Gnomeo & Juliet is a children oriented movie which adapted from William Shakespeare’s classic tragedy work, Romeo & Juliet. The story is introduced to the audience by a little gnome reading a prologue on a stage with a lighting focuses on him, saying "The story you are about to see has been told before. A lot. And now we are going to tell it again. But different.
Also, a major difference is the age of Juliet and Romeo. In the play, Juliet is just a teen around the age of 14 (I.III.14). In the movie, the author makes them older
The setting of the movie is the first obvious difference that can be seen. The movie was set in New York City, New York in 2000 while the play was set in Elsinore, Denmark in the late middle ages. This greatly affects the way the movie is viewed because it is essentially an entirely different world. In the movie there are video cameras, cars, phones and skyscrapers, all things that obviously weren’t around during Shakespeare’s time. Even if the movie and the play had been based in the same year, the story still would have been slightly different.
However, in Franco Zeffirelli's adaptation, they left out some important scenes and made changes to some lines. For example, Act 5, Scene 3, in which Romeo fights and eventually kills Paris outside Juliet's crypt, was filmed but deleted from the final print. And Baz Luhrmann's movie version is very different from the original play. They changed names, items, scenes, and even the families. For example, swords are replaced by guns; in the original, Gregory and Sampson are Capulets, but in the film, they are Montagues.
Romeo unconventionally attends a Capulet ball in disguise, and the two fall madly in love with each other, despite their family's advice to hate each other. They elope in secret, but, unfortunately, Juliet is already set to marry Count Paris by her dad who is unaware of her marriage to Romeo. The costumes throughout the movie are very medieval and well done. The setting of the movie in the streets is also very medieval and has lots of brick and stone.
Some aspects of both productions retract from the original plays' ideas. Some points of contrast are the clothing, the party scene, and Romeo and Juliet’s first kiss. The differences between the two movies are pretty big. One change the different movies made was the clothing the characters wore.
In the movie, the play takes place in Verona, Italy. In the movie it takes place in Verona Beach, Florida in the United States. I think the Author made it in the United States because maybe he was trying to apply older things to this modern world. Romeo and Juliet is a classic play by William Shakespeare, In 1968 it was adapted in a full movie, and later on in 1996 was again adapted into the big screen, both movies have so many similarities and so many differences, in the 1968 movie it is a more realistic, more true to the script, but the 1996 movie takes place in verona beach in the US, in modern times, the sword fights are actually guns, both use shakespearean english, but the most important part of any Romeo and Juliet performance, is to show their love was never meant to be, both movies do an excellent job in portraying this concept, in this essay I will explore that Romeo and Juliet’s relationship is starcrossed is portrayed by the 1968 and 1996 version through the first time they meet in the party, the balcony scene, and the scene where they are in bed. The first time Romeo and Juliet meet is at the Capulet party, this is portrayed in both movies differently, in the 1996 version Romeo is walking by an aquarium, looking at the fish, when he sees juliet, their eyes meet and follow each other, but just as they were going to come face to face, Juliet’s nurse grabs her, and takes her away to dance with Paris her future husband. In the 1968 version Romeo is far away from Juliet, and he hides behind a column, she is dancing with some people, but she is too far away, and has lots of people between Romeo and Juliet.
Romeo then goes to Juliet house party; they end up falling in love that night. While some differences between the movie and play are weapons,when Romeo sneaks out and when Juliet wakes up before romeo dies. The similarities are how Mercutio dies in both the play and movie. In Romeo and Juliet the two different families didn’t get along. In the movie it can make it more action packed when using guns in a fight.
The Shakespearean play of Hamlet takes place around 15th century. The play is about a prince named Hamlet. Hamlet is a Danish prince who suffers from the death of his father. He comes back from attending a school in Germany to learn that his mother, Gertrude, has married his father’s brother, Claudius. Even worse, Claudius has appointed himself as king, even though Hamlet was the rightful heir to the throne.
A book shows an imaginary world to a reader and gives a reader a platform to create an imaginary world out the story on a book. William Shakespeare 's greatest love story truly touches its readers heart by the way whole story is structured. The book is written in the way the it flows in the unprecedented scenes that it creates in the readers mind and the piteous end of the true lovers are the elements that made it the greatest love story ever told. Furthermore, this extraordinary story of a true love written in a book has been filmed which suited with then the time and generation.
One characteristic all of these movies have in common is that they all hold true to the above criteria for adaptations: they have the same plot line. While the timing and setting are different they have the same ideas as the play throughout the movie. As a matter of fact the people working on the 1996 rendition of Romeo and Juliet went so far as to name the guns the same names as the swords in the original play. The storyline of the movie adaptation is still the same; however, star-crossed lovers from different families. It is the little facts like these that showcase how the goal is not to drastically change the entire piece: they are simply changing the setting, a little of the language, and the time to make it easier to understand.
