In life people are either leaders or followers. My opinion of a leader is someone who shows independence and does what is right. In William Golding's Lord of the Flies, he shows a group of boys stranded on an island. As time goes on, the boys become savages fighting for the right to be chief. Simon shows the best traits of a leader, because he often goes off on his own path showing his independence. Simon is considered a leader over a follower because he often goes to a spot in the woods without the others knowing, he does not partake in activities such as eating meat, and he goes off to the beast without being told.
Simon finds a spot in the woods full of serenity. Golding describes this spot saying, “He came to a place where more sunshine

When one’s chance comes to eat meat, they turn it down because they know what is right for them. This w is not an easy choice, but Simon continues to follow what he believes is right. “Ralph stirred uneasily. Simon, sitting between the twins and Piggy, wiped his mouth and shoved his piece of meat over the rocks to Piggy who grabbed it. The twins giggled and Simon lowered his face in shame. Then Jack leapt to his feet, slashed off a great hunk of meat and flung it down at Simon's feet. ‘Eat! damn you!’ He glared at Simon.” (Golding 74). The boys on the island, biguns and littluns, are all eating the meat that Jack and his hunters have just returned with. Jack does not allow Piggy any meat, so Simon gives his meat to Piggy, knowing he is doing the right thing. After Simon does not eat the meat, Jack becomes angered by Simon's disobedience. Golding show’s Jack’s frustration by saying “‘I got you meat!’ numberless and inexpressible frustrations combined to make his rage elemental and awe-inspiring.” (Golding 74). Here we see some strong, emotional dialect to describe Jack's frustration, but Simon does not give way. Simon may seem stubborn, but his stubbornness is what makes him a leader although he has no followers Simon has great leadership qualities. Not eating the meat while the others are and Jack is getting angry, shows Simon guiding himself down his own path …show more content…
Simon follows his own path rather than the path of the other boys, and it is made clear many times. People can stay civil if they focus on what is right and go their own way. People are heavily influenced by the rest of society and can be misled when it comes to doing the right thing. Martin Luther king Jr. says, “A genuine leader is not a searcher for consensus but a molder of consensus.” A leader is not someone who tries to find approval from others but allows people to search for their approval. Simon does not need the others to approve of him to live, making him a perfect example of a
In the book Lord of the Flies, Simon becomes noticeably different from the rest of the schoolboys on the island. Simon is a shy individual and doesn’t speak often. He, unlike the other boys, enjoys being alone and independent while on the island. Although he comes across as one of the younger boys, he is one of the more disciplined, caring and mature; he understands what has to be done in order for them to survive and to keep peace between them all. Simon is the only boy on the island who sticks up for Piggy in countless situations throughout the book making him stand out in a positive way.
When simmon was alive he was loved by everyone and caused no problems only wanted to help everyone. “Simon found for them fruit they could not reach... passed them back down to the endless, outstretched hands” (Golding 56). This shows how simon was always willing to help ans was always loving. As simon started to disappear in the chapters the boys became inherently more evil. “What I mean is … maybe it’s only us” (Golding 89).
While Ralph is complaining to Jack about how people don’t help much he makes sure to mention that ‘“Simon, he helps”…“He’s done just as much as I have.”’ (54). Ralph’s able to appreciate Simon for the help he provides, even when later stating Simon is funny and weird. Simon is an outsider, and Ralph is angry with everyone, but still gives credit to Simon and recognizes the help Simon gave
Simon was the epitome of innocence, because he never wanted to hurt anyone. He also tried to be on everyone’s side and looked out for the rest of the group. He believed that everyone had the best intentions, and was intuitive to the other’s emotions. For example, after Piggy confronted Ralph, Ralph was embarrassed, so Simon tried to help by, “stroking Ralph’s arm shyly”(Golding 25). He wanted to let Ralph know that he thought he made the right choice and was willing to support him.
Simon’s beliefs of the inherent goodness of people and his desire to help others can be seen as parallel to Christ’s message of love and
Simon consistently expresses concern for the more helpless boys. This is shown when the Littluns follow him, and he picks choice fruit for them from spots they can't reach. In the book, Simon is characterized as a saint.
After going off on his own and killing a pig, Jack decides to make an offer to the other boys in order to try and convince them to join his new, savage-natured tribe. After returning to his old camp, Jack announces, “Tonight we’re having a feast. We’ve killed a pig and we’ve got meat. You can come and eat with us if you like” (Golding, Lord 140). This offer made by Jack is very convincing and greatly influences the other boys.
The ideal leader demonstrates a strong sense of responsibility. In the novel Lord of the Flies, Ralph exemplifies this quality when he takes over the boys and tries to maintain the order of the island. Golding writes, “We’ve got to have rules and obey them. After all, we’re not savages. We are English, and the English are best at everything” (Golding 24).
In all ways Simon would have been the best leader not only because he cares about everyone, but he also puts everyone before himself. He even cares about the littluns. Proof of this is in the middle of page 56 Simon is described as “Then, amid the roar of bees in the afternoon sunlight, Simon found for the fruit they could not reach... passed them back down to the endless, outstretched hands. " I chose this quote because it shows how Simon goes out of his way to help out the littluns when no one else would and this makes the littluns look up to Simon and follow his role.
He then follows it up with “I don’t know” (Golding 89), which shows him being in his own world. His “decontextualization… splits off the activity from [his] social frame of reference and reduces [his] contact with reality” (“Apa”). This is the way Simon just is, he is a follower, but has a different mindset compared to others. His introverted nature stops him from getting any message out to others. He mumbles, confusedly, “I don’t believe in the beast” (Golding 105).
Simon is the only kid on the island who still cares for the littluns by feeding them and making them shelter and a well-rested night's sleep. Even so, not all wonderful experiences can last with Golding, so he decides to play a bit of foreshadowing with Simon’s death with a pig head. When Simon had gotten lost in the woods, he accidentally stumbles across Jack’s sacrifice to “The Beast”, which is a pig’s head on a stick. The Pig head had begun threatening Simon because “we are going to have fun on this island! So don’t try it..”
The boys are even able to recognize their leader because their mind is drawn to the pure embodiment of social order in the microcosm that is the island. Just as social order is one of the components of human nature, spirituality is another that is addressed by Golding. When Simon talks to the Lord of the Flies, it asks him “‘There isn’t anyone to help you. Only me. And I’m the beast.’
According to the author, Jack is realizing that the only way he can have power is by hunting for others, but the more he hunts the most violent he becomes, but since he does not think fondly of piggy he does not give him meat, but when Simon gives him meat, throws meat at him and yells, "Eat! Damn you!" (pg 67). This short quote reinforces my answer because it shows how jack has become more aggressive, violent, and power-crazy. The examination of this quote reveals jacks blood-lust for power, and I'm not just talking about jack, in the book Jack represents savagery in society, violent acts when no one is looking, he represents that anyone can feel bloodthirsty for power, so furthermore Jack is exposed by that quote showing that he becomes more savage and his true nature rolls in, but he is also aware of it, he wears a clay mask towards the end of the book to cover up his insecurity and how he feels about his actions so he can have the power to not realize his actions and do things without thinking realistically.
However, these boys have been taught right and wrong, and they still do horrible acts because of the evil within them. Although Simon may seem like an outlier because he represents goodness and is a Christ-like figure, he is not born good, he just becomes good out of the knowledge that it is right. When Simon is killed, it is out of pure evil and love of death by Jack and his followers. Besides this, there is no other reason for the boys to kill him. Even seemingly good figures like Ralph and Piggy “Found themselves eager to take a place in this demented but partly secure society” (Golding 152).
Simon also tried to keep the peace between all of the boys by assuring them that everything is ok, and that there is nothing to be afraid of. “I just think you’ll get back all right.” (111). Simon was vigilant, and calming to the others. This shows true leadership, and that civilization is still present so long as he’s around.
