It 's responsible for the transportation, importation and distribution of multi-ton quantities of cocaine, marijuana, as well as large quantities of heroin and methamphetamine, into the Unites States from Mexico. Gang violence and activity has arisen in the past decades, with exceeding concerns and amongst youth being the primary target. Law enforcement try to gain a better understanding to why people are falling into criminal activity. Throughout the following essay we will be summarizing the background of one of the most notorious gang known internationally, MS-13. In addition, we will also be explaining ways different criminology theorist and theories apply to these particular group of people.
1. Chicago has compared him to Al Capone. He is rich, powerful, and one of the most dangerous men in Mexico. The great drug kingpin Joaqin “El Chapo” Guzman is the leader of the sinola cartel, the most powerful in Mexico. Recently escaped from the confines of a maximum security prison through a mile long tunnel which started at his shower.
The group originated in Los Angeles, but later it spread its activity into Canada, Central America, Mexico, and different areas of the United States. It lasts since the 1980s. The members are mostly Latinos from Central America. The identification mark of gang members are tattoos. They usually cover their chests, arms, and in some cases, even their faces.
Joaquin Guzman, or commonly known as El Chapo is an infamous Mexican drug lord. El Chapo, is about 60 years old, and is the head of the Sinaloa cartel, which is the World’s most powerful drug trafficking organization. El Chapo is the founder of the Sinaloa cartel, and they are known for their violence and their powerful influence. El Chapo was born into a family of poverty, and had an abusive father who was involved in drug trade. At about our age Joaquin was following his father’s path, and was growing marijuana for money to live off because he had been kicked out of his family home.
The gang was known to operate between the years 1850 and 1853 and the gang was known for having committed the most crimes during the Gold Rush. Going back to Joaquin Murrieta the leader and founder of the gang, he was born in the year 1829 in Álamos, Sonora, Mexico, and died on July 25, 1853, in Mariposa County, California. It was believed he was between twenty-four and twenty-five years old when he lost his life in a gunfight in Mariposa. It is also known that he was married to a woman by the name of Rosita Carmel Feliz. Before becoming an outlaw and founding his gang the Five Joaquins he was a gold miner and a vaquero.
"The Zetas have obviously assumed the role of being the number 1 organization responsible for most the homicides, the narcotic-related homicides, the beheadings, the kidnappings, the extortions that take place in Mexico," said US Drug Enforcement Agency’s chief for Mexico and Central America Ralph Reyes after the cartel murdered a police chief, his wife and four children in Veracruz, Mexico. Los Zetas were originally based on military lines, but the group has now been built into a business structure, with quarterly meetings, business ledgers, even votes on key assassinations, the DEA said. Los Zetas also post videos on the internet showing the killing of people. In one clip, posted in 2013, a group of masked men behead four women who allegedly were tied to a rival gang: The Gulf Cartel. Through working for drug lord Héctor "El Güero" Palma and Félix Gallardo, Guzmán swiftly moved up the ranks after the leaders of the Guadalajara Cartel approved of Guzmán’s business strategies which included execution of smugglers who failed to deliver drug shipments on time. Utilizing these tactics and connections with other drug lords, Guzmán founded his own cartel which he expanded to create Mexico’s largest and wealthiest cartel. He would soon become the cause of personally 2000 or 3000 deaths by his own order alone. El Chapos career was finally ended recently when he was recaptured January 8, 2016.
They have spread across 6 different countries and have a count of 50 to 100,000 members worldwide. All of the articles explained that Mara Salvatrucha started off after Salvadoran immigrants fled to Los Angeles because of the civil war in El Salvador. When they arrived, the streets of L.A. were already dominated by Mexican and African-American gangs. The L.A. gangs terrorism of the immigrants caused the formation of MS-13. This led North America to deport all the gang members they could back to their home countries.
Guzman shifted his control to the eastern states of Northern Mexico (Durango, Coahuila, and Chihuahua) and violence has increased in Mexico and has spread into the border towns of Texas. In order to alleviate drug crime and murders in Mexico and Texas, it would be prudent to put “El Chapo” out of business. Since drug crime in California has decreased after legalization, it seems plausible to adopt such a law to mitigate drug crime in Texas and our neighbor, Mexico.”

Gang youth have moved from levying minor taxes in their territories to running extensive extortion rackets. Shopkeepers, sex workers, students and teachers, taxi and bus companies must all comply with the requests, though the transport sector is most heavily affected.
The illegal drug business is a business that is worth more than 25 billion dollars a year. An economic issue that the Barrio Azteca gang has to deal with is other gangs trying to fight for the control of the illegal drug business because the industry of illegal drugs looks very desirable to other gangs
According to the FBI, organized crime is defined as any group having some manner of a formalized structure and whose primary objective is to obtain money through illegal activities. (Federal Bureau of Investigations, n.d.). Their position are obtained through corruption, extortion, laundering, violence (actual or threat) and graft. The groups behind these illegal activities can include local officials, politicians, mafia or cartels and syndicates (Russian, Italian, African etc.). Regardless the group there is a common theme amongst them, they are structured, well organized and have some type of influence throughout the local community, region or even nationally.
