Introduction
Social cohesion is often referred as the “glue” or the “bonds” that helps in keeping society integrated. (Larsen, 2014). This bond is defined by common values and behaviours of a groups having different backgrounds or circumstances. (Shires, 2015). In a multi-cultural society like Singapore, ongoing events and threats in other parts of the world can affect this fragile bond we have. With the advancement of technology and transport, foreign threats are a concern if their intention is to stir uneasiness among ethnic groups. Through the policies implemented, it is important that every Singaporean makes an effort in preserving the 50 years of communal harmony we enjoyed.
Social cohesion is important in ensuring that people of all

This causes people of different ethnic groups to further divide from one another, as they see the opposing group as a threat. Riots and civil wars have serious effects on the stability of the country, and a direct impact on the economy in the long run. Some of these effects includes reduction in investment due to civil unrest and damage of infrastructure. All of these events leads to injury or loss of human lives, and prevents the country from developing as investors move away due to the internal unrest. Most importantly, there is emotional distrust in the different ethnic groups and hate and misunderstandings would be further intensified from these actions. (Wilson Center, …show more content…
The plan aims to offer integration courses, which includes teaching German, bilingual lessons and introduction classes to German’s civilisation and culture, of which all are examinable. Since 2012, 780,000 immigrants have participated in this course and the government is still continuously enhancing the course by upgrading the content taught, ensuring that it is accessible to everyone throughout the country and being specific in the target group. This method is similar to Centre for Development of Advanced Computing (CDAC) in Singapore, which will further be discussed below. With all of these methods in place, immigrants and racial groups will feel like an included part of society, as helped is specially rendered to them to integrate into society and possibly provide them with a better quality of life. In the planet, there are different kinds of people who have been co-existing together over the years. The settlement of people in the world is such that different people who come from one tribe tend to settle in a given region where they live together peacefully and carry on with their daily day-to-day activities to improve their livelihoods. However, people from different parts of the world develop some differences between them that result in conflicts among them in some instances. Conflicts can be at different levels such as community conflicts, national conflicts regional conflicts or even global conflicts. The effects of conflicts among people are usually felt by each and every person in the community, and they are usually
Minorities will cause violence just so that they can be heard. For example for the death of Laquan McDonald. Many minorities were upset at the police and want them and city to know that their lives also mattered. This caused a lot of looting and destruction within the city, and because of this the police officers were suspended off the force.
In both cases the community or world as a whole must step in before things get too bad and stop both wars and contentions before they end up too widespread and large of a problem to fix. Basically, both war and contagions become very hard to overthrow once they effect a certain amount of people and spread to a certain amount of land. Both can not be escaped by indifference to the problem or hiding from it, these solutions work for a little while until the problems are too big to contain, and then it 's too late. People in the position to help would benefit more from stepping in and stopping both a war or a contagion right ways because not only does it cost less money but cost less lives if a smaller power is taken out before it can become large scale and
The book A Long Way Gone: Memoirs of a Boy Soldier, the main character Ismael Beah tells a story of his first hand account of Sierra Leone’s civil war. Ismael Beah was a boy soldier who went from village to village with his brother and some friends in search of food and shelter. Beah was eventually brainwashed into thinking that what the group was doing would make up for his own family’s death. While his is fighting for the government he is heavily drugged to the point that he believes that what he is doing is the right thing. His lieutenant ended up letting him go with UNICEF so they can have better lives.
Riots do not make a purpose, except for that they are criminal activities. “Riots are an offense against the public, peace and order” and is defined by “three or more people who are out of control, causing injuries or endangering the safety of others They often violate various laws and cause or threaten property” (n.d., 2008) Police officers will inform that the people have “unlawfully assembled” and they should disperse. If the crowds do not disperse the members can be arrested with multiple chagres ranging from disturbing the peace, rioting or resisting
Another contrast between these riots are the difference in numbers of deaths, injuries, arrests, and property
These social conflicts caused many
For the final project, students are expected to form group with those from different backgrounds, together they would give a presentation on a given topic. To encourage students sign up for the workshop, two to three transferable units should be assigned to the program. When students are discussing their Student Educational Plan with academic counselors, counselors can also promote and recommend students to sign up for the workshop as well. Another method to produce a more integrated campus would be organizing multicultural festivals from time to time.
Eventually, as more incidents occur between the races, the distrust, and eventually anger begins to spread as well throughout the public, replacing the fear, which then gives way to anger. Throughout this course, it slowly infects the government, worsening tensions
This shows us that the language barrier can not only have an effect on the immigrant themselves but also their children. Furthermore there are situations where the immigrants affect the country both positively and
The three specific connections that can be found between the points made by the young people in their letters to the Chicago Times and the main ideas of the social disorganization theory are: In the summertime, low-income neighborhoods in Chicago experience an increase in delinquency and crime. Second point, there is little police intervention or protection from gang activity in these communities and the people who are not involved feel like they have nobody to turn to and most resort to hiding inside to avoid victimization. Last, youth not only would like more protection from violence in their neighborhoods but better relationships between law enforcement officers and the community. These three points can be found on page 126, in the article, Voices of Youth Dealing Crime and Delinquency.
Even in a society that, overall, is diverse, people with similar ideas and experiences tend to congregate in small groups, where they are comfortable. It is much easier to remain in homogenous groups, among those who understand each other. When different groups combine, many different life experiences and points of view will be present and will potentially clash. Misunderstanding is bound to occur in some form when individuals of different backgrounds interact. When misunderstandings occur, people tend to respond with violence, fear, or stereotyping.
To also improve the access that immigrants have to services and resources in Canada, “language training and integration programmes are provided by governments free of charge” (Banting, Kymlicka, 2013; 588). Furthermore, the multiculturalism policy allows for the increased tolerance, inclusivity and sense of belonging for Immigrants entering Canada,
In this paper I will be analyzing how living in a stressful, violent, and poverty-ridden environment in combination with racial discrimination can allow residents of that community too develop a “code of the street”, a set of informal rules to abide by. The two theories I will be connecting this matter to, is the social learning theory and social disorganization theory. More often, these street codes and rules are created by young gang members who manage and “run” the neighbourhood and have an influence. It is a requirement for every resident to not only be aware but abide by the rules, it does not matter the age, sex, or colour, but more where that individual resides, at times it may be for survival. Some of the rules in this code are
In the Brave New World, a book written by Aldous Huxley,, he writes about a utopian future where humans are genetically created and pharmaceutically anthesized. Huxley introduces three ideals which become the world's state motto. The motto that is driven into their dystopian society is “Community, Identity and Stability.” These are qualities that are set to structure the Brave New World. Yet, happen to contradict themselves throughout the story.
